WWE's Most Important Story to Tell During Men's Royal Rumble 2025

WWE's 2025 edition of the Royal Rumble on February 1 has many, many interesting stories it could weave, especially in the men's match at the very top of the card.

Even casual fans know the big ones worth a mention: Possible huge returns. John Cena's retirement tour. Bloodline shenanigans. Seth Rollins' hatred for CM Punk. Everyone and anyone who wants a shot at Cody Rhodes. Even the specter of the Rock hangs in the background.

But the most important story of all for WWE to tell? Punk and his grip on Roman Reigns.

Grip, because Punk cut a deal with Paul Heyman behind Reigns' back before the Survivor Series "WarGames" match and assisted the Tribal Chief—who now owes the Best in the World a "favor."

Fast foward to just a few weeks out from the rumble and, while everyone on the planet seems stuck on Punk's (hilarious) comments about Hulk Hogan, there's a little tidbit in his ranting that refers to the favor Reigns owes him.

That "favor" is by far the biggest wild card in the rumble, and it's getting a mention now, even subtly, for a good reason. Because on paper, it seems super obvious—Punk will call it in during the men's rumble match, requiring Reigns to help him clear the ring and win the whole thing.

Fans can see where this hypothetical is going given what they know about both men, of course. Reigns might help at first, especially if Heyman is on the outside, convincing him to do so. After all, an agreement is an agreement, and Reigns wouldn't be where he's at in the ongoing Bloodline saga right now had Punk not helped at Survivor Series.

But the help isn't likely to last.

At some point, one has to imagine that Punk and Reigns would indeed clear most of the entrants from the ring. But that's when the realization will hit the Tribal Chief that he's oh-so-close to another WrestleMania main event and, perhaps more importantly, another shot at Rhodes and everything he lost when his historic title reign ended one year ago.

Not that Punk wouldn't foresee this and be ready, leading to a collapse of the alliance in real-time and some third party swooping in and eliminating them both. If one had to guess, that's an opportunistic Cena stealing the rumble win and the right to go on and challenge Rhodes to really get the retirement party started.

One smooth storytelling swoop like that and 'Mania is set about as perfect as it could be, provided Rock doesn't fly back in at the last second and ruin the storytelling again.

In this scenario, Punk gets peeved that Reigns didn't make good on the favor and cost him a 'Mania main event. Reigns would be mad at the latter, too, while also justifiably mad that he was put in this position in the first place without his consent by Heyman, ever the schemer. And Heyman, of course, would be stuck in the middle, smack between his past and present.

WWE has thrown down several hints at a Punk vs. Reigns 'Mania match for good reason, so this is one solid way to get things there. The pops and ratings the two generate together almost comically dwarf anything else the company has on offer right now. The match wouldn't need a title at stake, but it wouldn't be all that shocking to see Gunther lose his to one of the two before 'Mania, either.

Furthering this notion is the fact WWE wasted (and that's the right word, the show was lukewarm and corporate-filled weirdness at best) what should have been a 'Mania Night 1 main event between Punk and Rollins on Raw's Netflix debut.

Granted, WWE could revert to Vinceish booking habits and actually have one of Punk or Reigns win the whole rumble at the cost of the other, weaving their way to a triple-threat main event involving Rhodes, too.

More appealing, though, is Cena getting the Rhodes match while Punk and Reigns headline the other night in a blood feud that now slots as the best long-running story going in a narrative-focused WWE.

Of the many stories the royal rumble needs to tell, this is by far the most important right now. WWE has made a habit of missing out on dream 'Mania main events over the years (Sting-'Taker, Rock-Reigns, etc. etc.) and can't let Reigns vs. Punk be another.

Right now, there's nothing more compelling in pro wrestling. With a device like the Royal Rumble and 'Mania now split into two nights, meaning two main event chances, there's no excuse to put any other story above the simmering drama between Reigns and Punk.

WWE Rumors on CM Punk's Off-Script Promo, The Bloodline; Bad Bunny Claims GOAT Status

Punk Reportedly Went Off Script with Raw Promo

CM Punk reportedly went off the cuff with some of his comments during his promo during Monday night's episode of Raw.

In the midst of an interview segment with Jackie Redmond, Punk discussed his entry into the men's Royal Rumble match and said: "You put Hulk Hogan in the Royal Rumble, I'll throw his dusty ass over the top rope, and I'll kill Hulkamania once and for all."

According to Fightful Select (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News), the Hogan mention was not part of the script, but Punk did not get any backstage heat for saying it.

Fightful added that rather than anyone backstage having an issue with what Punk said, he actually drew some laughter.

Hogan appeared on the debut episode of Raw on Netflix a few weeks ago, and rather than receiving the raucous cheers he was used to for much of his career, the live crowd in Inglewood, California, heartily booed him.

The reaction was likely due to a mixture of racist comments he made several years ago, as well as his outspokenness during the latest United States presidential election.

Given the awkwardness of Hogan's segment, WrestleVotes reported on Backstage Pass (h/t Steve Carrier of Ringside News) that fans "may not see" Hogan make many live appearances moving forward.

There has been no indication that WWE plans on utilizing the 71-year-old Hogan as a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble match, and it seems unlikely that it could happen even if WWE wanted it since Hogan has undergone numerous back surgeries over the years.

Punk seemingly has more freedom on the mic than most, and it stands to reason that his Hogan comment was simply meant to evoke a reaction from the crowd.

It did precisely that, and perhaps got Punk even more fan support in the process leading up to the Royal Rumble premium live event on Feb. 1.

Sikoa's Bloodline to Reportedly Undergo Change

Solo Sikoa took control of The Bloodline after Roman Reigns lost the WWE Championship to Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 40 and it molded it into his own vision, but after a major recent loss, Sikoa's group is reportedly moving in a new direction.

According to WrestleVotes on Backstage Pass (h/t Mukherjee), WWE is "moving away" from Sikoa's stable being referred to as The Bloodline.

After WrestleMania 40, Solo kicked Jimmy Uso and Paul Heyman out of The Bloodline, eventually replacing them with Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa and Jacob Fatu.

Solo wore the Ula Fala and claimed he was the new Tribal Chief, which led to a rivalry with Reigns once Roman returned to the fold at SummerSlam.

Reigns' teamed with Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso, Sami Zayn and CM Punk to beat Solo's new Bloodline in a WarGames match at Survivor Series, which led to Tribal Combat between Reigns and Sikoa to determine the true Tribal Chief.

Reigns beat Sikoa on the debut episode of Raw on Netflix, and The Rock bestowed the Ula Fala onto Reigns.

Sikoa and his group have continued to make appearances on WWE programming since then, but he has not been called the Tribal Chief, and the announce team has seemingly avoided calling them The Bloodline.

It isn't yet clear if WWE intends on coming up with a new name for the quartet of Sikoa, Tama, Loa and Fatu, but that could potentially be in the cards.

The bigger question relates to what is next for Sikoa and Co. leading up to the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 41 now that The Bloodline is behind them.

Bad Bunny Calls Himself Best Celebrity Wrestler

Confidence is paramount in the world of professional wrestling, and despite his lack of experience, Bad Bunny has it in spades.

During an appearance this week on Hot Ones, Bad Bunny said it was a "fact" when interviewer Sean Evans called him the best celebrity wrestler of all time:

The world-famous musician is a longtime wrestling fan, and he first tried his hand at sports entertainment in 2021 when he teamed with Damian Priest to beat The Miz and John Morrison at WrestleMania 37.

Bad Bunny went on to compete in the 2022 men's Royal Rumble match as a surprise entrant, but his most notable match came in 2023.

At Backlash in his home country of Puerto Rico, Bad Bunny faced Priest in a street fight, and it ended up being not only the most entertaining match of the night, but one of the most entertaining matches of the entire year.

Bad Bunny of course benefited from working with a seasoned veteran like Priest, but he deserved plenty of credit in his own right for putting on such a strong performance in his first one-on-one bout.

While it is now trending toward two years since Bad Bunny last wrestled, his return may be on the horizon.

Earlier this month, Bad Bunny told Julyssa Lopez of Rolling Stone (h/t Mukherjee) that he wanted to get back in the ring, saying:

"I want to do it one more time. I want to put my life at risk in the ring. I felt like I didn't risk it enough in the ring, and I want to do it. I want to scare my mother When? I don't know. We stay in contact with the people at WWE, we're always paying attention to what's going on. But when, I don't know. I hope there's a time where I can really get ready, like I did the last few times. And I'd love to take more time to get ready physically."

Shortly thereafter, WWE head of creative Triple H tagged Bad Bunny in a post on X, writing: "Congrats on the new album. ... After listening, I can see it clearly, new tracks echo through the stadium while you make your way down that aisle to the ring. EPIC! Talk soon!"

WWE has never shied away from utilizing celebrities, and when they show have a love and ability for the business, the company will go back to them on multiple occasions.

That has been the case with Logan Paul, and Bad Bunny seems to have put himself in the same category.

CM Punk Wants Stone Cold; LA Knight Eyes Sydney Sweeney; WWE Rumors on Cody, Heyman

Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from the WWE Universe.

CM Punk Cites Stone Cold, Hitman as Dream Opponents

No matter how implausible, the idea of a generational dream match between CM Punk and Stone Cold Steve Austin refuses to die.

Punk was a guest on the Jan. 5 episode of Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson's Nightcap show. He cited Austin as the legend who "always comes to mind" when he ponders his ultimate fantasy opponent (via Ringside News' Felix Upton). He added that the Texas Rattlesnake is "number one with a bullet."

Punk also would've loved to get in the ring with Bret Hart "because that is a guy I looked up to when I was a kid."

"That's a guy that helped get me into this sport from an interest perspective," he said.

Punk vs. Austin is an idea WWE fans have floated for years, ever since Punk emerged as the closest facsimile among active stars to the Hall of Famer. His return to the company after a lengthy exile renewed the possibility.

In February, Austin told ESPN's Marc Raimondi that Punk "would be a good one" to go up against if he were to have one final farewell match. Later in the summer, the Straight-Edge Superstar taunted Austin a bit at Fanatics Fest and said "his six-shooters might be buried in the Nevada desert."

Is this ever going to happen? Probably not. Will that stop fans from fantasy-booking Austin vs. Punk? Also no.

LA Knight Expresses Wish for Netflix Project

WWE's partnership with Netflix opens up some opportunities in content terms. The major motion pictures and straight-to-DVD releases WWE once helped to produce, for example, would be a natural fit on the streaming service.

LA Knight is already dreaming of branching out into the movie or miniseries world.

"My first instinct is, we should do something comedic, but I don't think that would be the right move," he said to Metro's Alistair McGeorge. "I feel like we need to do some sort of—maybe we take it easy on me and get my feet wet with a little maybe action-drama of some sort.

"And maybe it's some sort of a miniseries, or maybe even a little quick, little quick little movie or something."

The former United States champion listed Sydney Sweeney as his first choice for a co-star.

Netflix's deal to broadcast Raw only just got underway. Considering the contract run for 10 years, that's a long time for WWE's footprint on the service to evolve and expand.

Contributors for Rhodes/Heyman Segment Singled Out

Last Friday's edition of SmackDown opened with Paul Heyman announcing Roman Reigns is entering the men's Royal Rumble match with the goal of dethroning Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41.

Rhodes didn't get to enjoy much mic time before Kevin Owens intervened. As they battled in the stands, things spiraled from there with Jimmy Uso staving off an attack by Jacob Fatu and Tama Tonga on Heyman before getting laid out by the "Samoan Werewolf."

Fightful Select (via Joseph Lee of 411 Mania) detailed the backstage personnel who helped lay out SmackDown. Michael Hayes and Jamie Noble were the producers for the opening segment, while Michael Kirshenbaum and Cristian Scovell were credited as the writers. Scovell was also mentioned as one of Rhodes' regular writers.

Between announcing Reigns' inclusion in the Rumble and prolonging the storylines involving Rhodes, Owens and The Bloodline, they managed to cram in a lot of information and action to get SmackDown started.

Answering the Biggest WWE WrestleMania 41 Questions on Rock, Reigns, Punk, Cena, More

It's that time of the year when we speculate about how the top stars will factor into WrestleMania season.

WWE is thriving following a highly publicized partnership with Netflix to start the year and record gates in 2024. The company will start the road to The Greatest Spectacle in Sports Entertainment at Royal Rumble, the first major premium live event of 2025, on Feb. 1.

The debut episode of Raw set up some interesting plotlines as John Cena became the first competitor to announce his entry into this year's men's Royal Rumble match. Meanwhile, Roman Reigns finally defeated Solo Sikoa to reclaim the Ula Fala and the honorary title of Tribal Chief.

CM Punk also seemingly settled the score with Seth Rollins. This could set the 46-year-old on the path to challenge for championship gold and realize his dream of headlining The Showcase of the Immortals.

Fans hope that The Rock's back-to-back appearances on the WWE's flagship series and NXT didn't signal an abrupt change of direction. However, The Final Boss is the most glaring wild card in the equation now.

Let's try to decipher what all this means and answer the biggest questions about these five superstars ahead of WrestleMania 41.

John Cena

Cena effectively kicked off his farewell tour and left fans with plenty to digest on the latest episode of Raw.

Last summer, the star of Peacemaker announced that he plans to retire from in-ring competition at the end of 2025, making the upcoming event his final WrestleMania. It's a bittersweet realization for many viewers who grew up watching him, but he still has a chance to end his storied career on a high note.

As such, the 47-year-old declared himself for his last men's Royal Rumble match and vowed to earn a shot at breaking Ric Flair's record to become a 17-time world champion. Attempting to make history on the road to retirement is the best use of his final year because it sets up matchups with Gunther, Cody Rhodes, or even CM Punk.

Of course, this raises the question of who will be his final opponent on The Grandest Stage of Them All. According to recent reports, Cena vs. Rhodes is the "working idea" for the two now that plans for The Rock are unclear.

This could be the perfect way to pass the torch or cement Big Match John as the greatest superstar of all time. Even if it is a contingency plan, this high-profile match is an exciting option worthy of the bright lights in Las Vegas.

CM Punk

Most of us assumed CM Punk's aspirations to win a world title and headline WrestleMania for the time in his career would lay the groundwork for his match with Rollins at the event.

Instead, the two faced off for the first time since 2013 in the main event of the debut episode of Raw on Netflix. That certainly doesn't close the door on the possibility of a rematch at The Show of Shows, but it's enough to make us second-guess our initial prediction.

After all, WWE would've likely kept them apart until April if that was the endgame. Although this rivalry is probably far from over, this doesn't feel like the build to a bigger match at Allegiant Stadium.

Like Cena, Punk declared himself for the men's Royal Rumble match and called out Gunther again. So, could The Ring General be his WrestleMania opponent following their steel cage match at the live event in his hometown to end 2024?

That would put him in contention for the world heavyweight championship, but it will be interesting to see how his favor from Paul Heyman will come into play. If The Second City Saint wants to compete in the main event, a long-awaited clash with his client would guarantee that spot.

Seth Rollins

Right now, it's unclear what this means for Rollins. If his heated rivalry with Punk doesn't culminate at WWE's biggest show of the year, what's next for The Visionary?

The inaugural world heavyweight champion spent much of 2024 recovering from injuries or seeking revenge, but his sacrifice made him the MVP of WrestleMania 40. Maybe it's time for him to enter the Rumble and fight to regain the title he established.

Cena, Punk, and The Rock currently have better odds of winning, but it's not that farfetched to predict Rollins could win the iconic stipulation match or Elimination Chamber. If he wants to refocus on leading the company into the future, that's his best chance of earning a title shot.

According to Ibou of WrestlePurists, Rollins is slated to challenge Gunther at The Showcase of the Immortals. That would make sense because the two have been circling each other for a while now.

In fact, many expected The Ring General to be the one to dethrone him last year as he rose to prominence as the longest-reigning Intercontinental champion. So, this matchup is long overdue.

The Rock

As usual, The Rock remains one of the most unpredictable elements heading into WrestleMania season.

The coveted dream match Reigns has been a talking point in speculation for the event every year since at least 2018. It seemed like it was finally going to happen last year until WWE pivoted to a rematch against Rhodes instead after The American Nightmare won his second consecutive men's Royal Rumble match.

In the process, a showdown between The Final Boss and the second-generation star became an intriguing prospect. Still, there was no way the company could pass on the opportunity to deliver this highly anticipated battle of two generational superstars again, right?

The company even planted the seed for a much better story than what could've been in 2024, However, The Rock seemingly assured us he wouldn't be involved before we could see it come to fruition.

We don't know how else you could perceive his latest appearances on WWE programming. After all, he made amends with Rhodes and acknowledged Reigns after he defeated Sikoa in Tribal Combat.

In one night, The Great One dropped the heel character he popularized last year and wrapped up the two storylines we expected him to advance. Then, he didn't give us any new breadcrumbs to close NXT New Year's Evil.

It was a real head-scratcher that won't stop many viewers from speculating, but it's safe to assume The Rock isn't currently in play.

Roman Reigns

That leaves us with Roman Reigns. The Tribal Chief has headlined The Greatest Spectacle in Sports Entertainment for eight of the last 10 years.

The Samoan star holds the record for most WrestleMania main event appearances with nine. That unparalleled accomplishment ensures he will be a focal point again at this year's event, but what role will he play?

For the first time since 2021, Reigns might not step onto The Grandest Stage of Them All as the company's top champion. It has been five years since his last entry in the men's Royal Rumble match.

Ironically, it has also been 10 years since he won the contest and The Rock awkwardly raised his hand to a chorus of boos in 2015. Today, his avid fans would be elated if he became a two-time winner and staked his claim to his fifth consecutive WrestleMania main event appearance.

Still, it's difficult to guess who his opponent will be if it's not The Final Boss. Given the story WWE has presented since November, Rollins makes the most sense, but Punk immediately stands out as a sufficient replacement for The Rock.

Their encounters during the build to Survivor Series: WarGames generated millions of views on YouTube. Considering their history, this could be one of the biggest matches of this generation, and WWE should strike while the iron is hot.

What's Next For CM Punk and Seth Rollins After WWE Raw on Netflix Match?

CM Punk and Seth Rollins battled on WWE Raw's Netflix debut in one of the most anticipated matches in recent memory, the culmination of hostility between the marquee stars that dated back a decade.

Punk won Monday's contest, but one lingering question remains: What's next for the former world champions as WWE prepares to embark on the Road to WrestleMania 41?

For Punk, the answer is rather simple; for Rollins, it's not so easy.

Punk: WrestleMania Main Event or Bust

From his second night back in WWE, it was apparent that competing in the main event of WrestleMania was one of the major goals Punk still had for himself.

An untimely torn triceps suffered in last year's men's Royal Rumble match prevented that from happening.

However, after wrapping up his feud with Drew McIntyre inside Hell in a Cell, aiding Roman Reigns to victory at Survivor Series: WarGames and besting Rollins on the Netflix premiere of Raw, Punk has a clear path to achieving his dream.

What that looks like is the question.

Does Punk target Gunther's World Heavyweight Championship, or does he eye Cody Rhodes and the Undisputed WWE Championship?

Maybe his path to the marquee match at WrestleMania 41 runs through Reigns, who owes him a favor for the assist at Survivor Series. Could that favor involve a match with The Tribal Chief at the top of the card come April 19-20?

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported that the match has been discussed for this year's Showcase of the Immortals. Given the history between the competitors and their undeniable star power, it's a contest WWE could put on any card and sell out the arena.

Regardless of the path, Punk's road to WrestleMania almost certainly includes a strong performance at the Royal Rumble, if not a win in the men's match, ahead of a high-profile matchup at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas this spring.

The same cannot be said for his most recent rival, though.

Where Does Rollins Go From Here?

It's unlikely Rollins and Punk have seen the last of each other, especially ahead of the Royal Rumble, where they will intersect at some point in the 30-man Battle Royal.

The Visionary does not have a clear path to WrestleMania from there, though.

His previous feud with Bronson Reed is on hold after the big man suffered a serious injury in the closing moments of the men's WarGames match in November.

An alliance of convenience has been teased with Drew McIntyre as they both combat similar foes. But Kevin Owens appears to fit that spot better than Rollins, who has already rebuffed the Scot's first efforts to form a partnership.

The question from there is whether Rollins remains a babyface or turns heel.

He would need a complete makeover, including entrance music, to undertake such a drastic change in persona. Perhaps that happens in the months leading into WrestleMania.

Upon Rollins' most recent return to Raw on October 7, he was clearly dismayed by Jey Uso interrupting him, and their paths have intersected since on more than one occasion, including Uso keeping Punk and The Visionary apart in an attempt to keep the peace.

Maybe that is the WrestleMania 41 match for Rollins.

It allows him to have that singles match against one of the most popular stars in the entire company, and it allows Jey a chance to redeem himself after last year's underwhelming sibling battle with Jimmy.

His noted respect and friendship with Jey makes that a bit sticky, but it's not something WWE can't write around when developing rivalries for the biggest show of the year.

It is the uncertainty surrounding Rollins and where he goes after the Punk feud does officially end that is the question, and it's also somewhat disappointing for a Superstar whose mere presence a year ago meant so much to the show.

Not only was Rollins involved in the main event of Night 1, but he also defended the world title and was the key element in the finish of the marquee match on Night 2.

Perhaps being left behind factors into what feels like an inevitable heel turn.

Regardless, Rollins and his path to the big show in 2025 feels like one of the most crucial and must-see stories of the next four months.
