Keith Jardine vs. Matt Hamill likely for TUF 11 Finale

Mar 25, 2010

*Please visit FiveKnuckles.com for more mixed martial arts media*

A light-heavyweight bout between Keith Jardine and Matt Hamill is reportedly in the works for The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale in June.

Though not yet officially announced, TUF 11 Finale will likely take place on June 19 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, and will air live on Spike TV. The event will feature the middleweight finalists from the 11th season of the Ultimate Fighter square off for a six-figure UFC contract.

Jardine (15-7-1) will likely be fighting to keep his job with the UFC after losing three straight inside the Octagon against the likes of Quinton Jackson, Thiago Silva and most recently Ryan Bader at UFC 110 last month. Prior to the losses, he picked up a big win over Brandon Vera at UFC 89 in October 2008.

Jardine has been very consistent during his time in the UFC, putting together an even 6-6 record with the promotion including other notable Octagon wins over Kerry Schall, Mike Whitehead, Wilson Gouveia, Forrest Griffin and Chuck Liddell; while suffering other UFC losses to Stephan Bonnar, Houston Alexander and Wanderlei Silva.

Hamill (8-2) is currently riding a three-fight winning steak, with wins coming over Reese Andy, Mark Munoz and Jon Jones in a controversial disqualification win at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale in December. Hamill was awarded the win after Jones landed numerous illegal "12-to-6" elbow strikes on him while he was down.

Hamill has fared better during his time in the Octagon, as he has put together a solid 7-2 UFC record, scoring other Octagon wins over Jesse Forbes, Seth Petruzelli, Rex Holman and Tim Boetsch. His other UFC losses have came against notables such as Michael Bisping and former UFC middleweight champ Rich Franklin.

Eric Schafer released from UFC

Following his second straight loss in the organization, seven-fight UFC veteran Eric Schafer
has been released from his contract with the UFC.

Schafer confirmed the news on Wednesday on The Underground.

"I found out an hour before reading this, was just joking around (though it really does suck). I'll just get back into the gym and see what the future holds. Despite losing the last 2 decisions, I felt I learned a lot, but the UFC is not a easy place to be working on my game. Oh well, I had some good battles and always went out looking to finish. Was an amazing experience."

Schafer exits the UFC suffering back-to-back unanimous decision losses to TUF 8 winner Ryan Bader at UFC 104 in October, and Jason Brilz at UFC on Versus 1 on March 21. He previously won four straight fights, which included back-to-back UFC wins over Houston Alexander at UFC Fight Night 15 and Antonio Mendes UFC 93.

Schafer leaves the UFC with an overall 3-4 record, defeating Rob MacDonald in his Octagon debut at UFC 62 in August 2006, which was then followed by two straight losses inside the Octagon against Michael Bisping at UFC 66 and Stephan Bonnar at UFC 77.

Since making his pro debut in June 1998, Schafer has competed for other notable promotions such as Cage Combat, HOOKnSHOOT, Duneland Classic, Gladiators Cage Fighting and Xtreme Fighting Organization. He sports an overall 11-5-2 overall MMA record, finishing all but one of his 11 wins including seven wins coming by submission and holds other notable wins over Jason Veach and Jason Guida.

The UFC releases Eliot Marshall and Shannon Gugerty

Mar 23, 2010

*Please visit FiveKnuckles.com for more mixed martial arts media*

The UFC has reportedly released light-heavyweight Eliot Marshall and lightweight Shannon Gugerty from their contracts following losses at Sunday's UFC on Versus 1 event.

Marshall's UFC release is very surprising as the promotion tends to release fighters after losing back-to-back fights. Marshall suffered his first UFC loss at Sunday's event after previously winning three bouts with the promotion. Marshall would be a relevant pick-up for any promotion, even more so for the San Jose-based Strikeforce promotion, whose light-heavyweight division is still developing.

Marshall began his UFC career as a cast member on The Ultimate Fighter 8 where he was defeated by Karn Grigoryan in the season's elimination bouts, however, Grigoryan was unable to continue onto the show, and Marshall was given a second chance. He then defeated Shane Primm, but would go onto lose to eventual TUF 8 winner Ryan Bader in the semi-finals.

As previously mentioned, Marshall won his first three UFC bouts, defeating Jules Bruchez at TUF 8 finale in December 2008,  Vinicius Magalhães at UFC 97 in April 2009, and Jason Brilz at UFC 103 in September. He exits the UFC suffering his first Octagon loss against veteran Vladimir Matyushenko at the aforementioned UFC on Versus 1 event on March 21.

Prior to competing in the UFC, Marshall fought the first six bouts of his career with the Colorado-based Ring of Fire organization. He has put together a solid 8-2 MMA record over his four-year career, with six of his wins being by stoppage including five coming by submission. His only other career loss came against former UFC fighter Rob MacDonald in December 2007.

Gugerty has lost two straight bouts inside the Octagon against Terry Etim at UFC 105 and most recently against Clay Guida at this past Sunday's UFC on Versus 1. Prior to the losses, he defeated Matt Grice at UFC 100 in July. He exits the UFC with a sub-par 2-3 record, suffering a loss in his sophomore effort with the promotion against Spencer Fisher at UFC 90 after defeating Dale Hartt in his UFC debut in July 2008 at UFC Fight Night 14.

Gugerty has competed the majority of his four-year career with Total Combat, fighting 10 of his 17 career bouts with the promotion. He sports a 12-5 MMA record, scoring stoppages in all of his 12 career wins including nine by submission. He holds a notable career win over longtime WEC veteran Cub Swanson.

Dana White on Jon Jones: "He shouldn't have a loss."

Mar 22, 2010

*Please visit FiveKnuckles.com for more mixed martial arts media*

Jon Jones has a big fan: Dana White. Last night, the UFC president commented that Jones' record should currently be an undefeated one.

Jones holds a 10-1 MMA record. His only loss was a disqualification to Matt Hamill at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale last December, where he threw a few illegal 12-6 elbows to Hamill's face.

White, on the other hand, sees the loss from a different perspective.

"It shouldn't have happened," he said to the media after UFC on Versus 1. "It shouldn't have happened that way. He shouldn't have a loss, so it's unfortunate."

Referee Steve Mazzagatti stopped the fight after Jones struck Hamill with illegal elbows, prompting the fight's end. But according to White, Hamill could have continued fighting through it.

"It was a downward elbow, you take a point," White said. "Hamill couldn't continue because his shoulder was messed up. It had nothing to do with the elbow."

During the bout, Hamill suffered a dislocated shoulder, but the fight did not end because of that. Hamill continued to fight through the injury."

"Why the fight was stopped had nothing to do with the elbow," White said. "If he had been gashed open and the fight couldn't continue, or broke his nose and couldn't continue - anything to do with the face or anything to do with an illegal strike - then I'd get it. But it didn't. He couldn't continue because of his shoulder. That should have never had been the call."

Speaking to commentator Joe Rogan after the bout last December, Jones acknowledged his mistake, saying that he's young and new to the big stage, and will learn from the loss.

CHARLIE BRENNEMAN vs. JASON HIGH

Home to two of the first five Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) events, Charlotte, North Carolina will once again host the premier organization in mixed martial arts on Wednesday, March 31st, as the UFC returns to Charlotte for the first time in nearly 15 years with a spectacular card at the Bojangles Coliseum featuring the lightweight showdown between two-time title challenger Kenny Florian and Japanese superstar and former PRIDE champion Takanori Gomi. This bout will headline the latest edition of Spike TV's hit UFC Fight Night series, which airs at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

UFC Fight Night: Florian vs. Gomi will feature a card loaded with high-powered match-ups such as Roy Nelson vs. Stefan Struve, Nate Quarry vs. Jorge Rivera, Ross Pearson vs. Dennis Siver, Andre Winner vs. Rafaello Oliveira, Jacob Volkmann vs. Ronys Torres, Robert Emerson vs. Nik Lentz, Caol Uno vs. Gleison Tibau, Yushin Okami vs. Lucio Linhares, Gerald Harris vs. Mario Miranda, Charlie Brenneman vs. Jason High.

Winner of The Ultimate Fighter Heavyweights, Roy Nelson (fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev. / 15-4) will be making his first post-TUF appearance in the UFC. After winning the finale with a convincing knockout of fellow heavyweight Brendan Schaub, Nelson looks to stay on the winning end of things as he squares off with the tallest fighter in the UFC, Stefan Struve (fighting out of Beverwijk, the Netherlands / 23-3). The 6-foot-11 Struve is only 22 years-old and is already turning heads in the heavyweight division. Currently riding a three-fight winning streak, the well-rounded mixed martial artist has tallied wins over Denis Stojnic, Chase Gormley, and Paul Buentello. He hopes to make it four straight when he takes on "Big Country."

A nine-fight veteran of the UFC, Nate Quarry (fighting out of Gresham, Ore. / 18-3) has taken on some of the best the middleweight division has to offer. A contestant on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, Quarry has won his last two fights over Jason MacDonald and Tim Credeur, but will have his work cut out for him as he takes another UFC veteran, Jorge Rivera (fighting out of Milford, Mass. / 17-7.) Riding a two-fight winning streak of his own over Nissen Osterneck and Rob Kimmons, Rivera is looking to continue his dominance when he faces off with Quarry on March 31st.

Winner of the ninth season of The Ultimate Fighter, Ross Pearson (fighting out of Sunderland, England / 12-3) is looking for a win to make it three straight in his UFC career. After defeating Andre Winner in the TUF finale, Pearson put together an impressive TKO of Aaron Riley at UFC 105. A difficult challenge awaits Pearson in his next fight when he takes on veteran fighter Dennis Siver (fighting out of Mannheim, Germany / 15-6.) The lightweight fighter has won his last four fights, all by stoppage and he hopes to make Pearson his next victim inside the Octagon.

A finalist during the ninth season of The Ultimate Fighter, Andre Winner (fighting out of Nottingham, England / 11-3-1) hopes to build off of his first round knockout victory over Rolando Delgado at UFC 105. Standing in his way will be Janja, Brazil native Rafaello Oliveria (fighting out of Whippany, NJ / 10-2.) A winner of a unanimous decision over John Gunderson in his last fight, Oliveira has plans to make it two straight in the lightweight division with a victory over Winner.

Three-time NCAA Division I All-American wrestler Jacob Volkmann (fighting out of Fergus Falls, Minn. / 9-2) is looking for his first win inside the Octagon and he hopes his great wrestling ability will help to get his hand raised at the end of his 155-pound debut. His opponent, Ronys Torres (fighting out of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil / 18-2), has other plans. The 24 year-old Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt hopes his showing at UFC Fight Night Florian vs. Gomi will warrant him his first UFC victory and begin his climb in the lightweight division.

An alumnus of The Ultimate Fighter Season 5, Rob Emerson (fighting out of Irvine, CA / 11-8, 1 NC) has won three of his last five fights since competing on the reality show. Coming off of a unanimous decision victory over Phillipe Nover at UFC 109, Emerson draws a tough competitor for his next fight, Nik Lentz (fighting out of Eden Prairie, Minn. / 19-3-2.). The lightweight fighter defeated Rafaello Oliveria in his UFC debut and fought to a majority draw in his last fight with Thiago Tavares. Lentz will have a chance to build off those performances when he takes on UFC veteran Emerson.

A nine-fight veteran of the UFC, Caol Uno (fighting out of Yokosuka pref., Kanagawa, Japan / 25-12-5) has fought some of the best lightweights in the world. Coming off of a majority draw against Fabricio Camoes at UFC 106, Uno has another tough test ahead of him as he takes on fellow UFC veteran, Gleison Tibau (fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla. / 30-6.) A black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Tibau has been victorious in three of his last four fights and hopes to add another win to his resume in this lightweight showdown.

A well-known middleweight with a stellar resume, Yushin Okami (fighting out of Kanagawa, Japan / 24-5) returns to the Octagon having won three of his last four bouts. Okami will bring his tenacious ground and pound with him when he meets up with fellow middleweight Lucio Linhares (fighting out of Helsinki, Finland / 13-5.) Known for his skills in the ground game, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt is looking to derail Okami and collect his first victory in the UFC.

A three-time NCAA Div. 1 qualifier in wrestling, Gerald Harris (fighting out of Tulsa, OK / 14-2) is the owner of a powerful wrestling game. He showed well-rounded ability when he defeated John Salter via TKO in his UFC debut on January 11. Looking to build off this win, Harris draws UFC newcomer Mario Miranda (fighting out of Kirkland, Wash. / 11-0) The 6-foot-3 middleweight with a strong wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu background looks to hold on to his perfect record as he enters the UFC.

A native of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, Charlie Brenneman (fighting out of Whippany, NJ / 11-1) is a former Division I wrestler making his UFC debut. He will be taking on fellow newcomer Jason High (fighting out of Lakewood, CA / 10-2.) The 5-foot-9 Kansas City, Missouri native is a veteran of international competition hoping to spoil the debut of Brenneman with a win of his own.
