Chuck Liddell talks expansion and growth of TUF

Apr 8, 2010

*Please visit FiveKnuckles.com for more mixed martial arts media*

"I always thought it would get this big, but I thought it would take a little more time. The big thing we always talked about was getting free fights on TV so people could see what a great sport it is. A lot of people heard about it, but it was all pay-per-view, and you're not going to spend $40 to watch something you heard about for the first time. [The Ultimate Fighter] was a great way to sneak fights on TV.

"I really argued against [Tito Ortiz] being a coach because I didn't want to give him any press or give people a reason to talk about him. I thought after that last fight that he had, he looked so bad that he was done. Nobody wants to see him fight anymore and everyone is tired of hearing his excuses about why he loses a fight. I guess I understand because people know there is a rivalry and we don't like each other and they really think that would sell. It always had to do with the press and the things he's done outside the ring that really bothered me. I still consider this fight as a tune up fight for me, but he did enough stuff in the first week... I'm ready to hurt him now. He did the dumbest thing he could do... piss me off and motivate me to train for six months. I'm going to hurt him."  - Chuck Liddell

The UFC has gone from being a $2 million industry to one that is worth north of $1 million. Crowds sometimes maxed out at 1,500; now they're roughly 15,000. And, as Chuck Liddell pointed out in an interview with Time Magazine, The Ultimate Fighter played a big role, not only in having people simply watch the sport, but also to get them acclimated to it, thus catapulting its popularity and growth.

Every fan, by now, knows about the feud between Liddell and Tito Ortiz. At the end of The Ultimate Fighter 11, the two will battle it out for a third time (Liddell 2-0 Ortiz). However, even though Liddell wanted to coach, he did not want to coach alongside Ortiz. On the other hand, Ortiz, too, wanted another coach on the show. Following his loss to Forrest Griffin, he pleased with UFC President Dana White for a "TUF 11: Ortiz vs. Griffin" season so that he could have a winning record over Griffin.

Liddell and Ortiz have both served as coaches during previous seasons of TUF; Liddell coached the inaugural season, while Ortiz headed up the third.

However, there has been talk that Ortiz did not finish out the show, prompting Rich Franklin to step in for Ortiz. This news is just a rumor, but the rumor persists. Should it be true, Franklin will Liddell after the seasons concludes. The two fighters are set to meet at UFC 115, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on June 12.

Free NBA Picks & Basketball Betting Predictions for April 6th 2010

Apr 6, 2010

Below are free NBA Picks and basketball predictions for April 6th 2010 from Touthouse.com handicappers. If you are looking for free NBA basketball picks on a daily basis or premium picks from our NBA basketball betting experts visit Touthouse.com each day.

Free NBA Pick: Oklahoma City vs. Utah Over 210.5 (Craig Trapp)
All the stars are aligned for a super high scoring game on Tuesday. These two have played a bunch of overs lately going 7-3 L10 played. Last game played these two scored 119-111 as OKC won at home. OKC has played four straight overs scoring 110 average in that time period. UTAH has not been playing quite as many overs but its not because of their scoring as the last 5 they have averaged 208 pts. Tonight we see Durant vs Williams as they both go for 30 and the offensive fireworks will be something to amaze. Easy over!!

Free NBA Pick: Milwaukee Bucks +6 (Jim Feist)
Reason: Milwaukee has been on a tear, both straight up and against the number, playing tough defense. This team is 5-0 ATS the last five games, plus an 18-5-1 ATS run. They take on a Chicago team that needs to win, just a shade behind the Toronto Raptors for the final playoff spot in the East. However, the Bucks are also motivated, tied with Miami for the No. 5 seed. In what should be a slowed paced, defensive game with so much at stake, look for a close one, meaning the value is all with the dog. Play the Bucks.

Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves rematch set for UFC 115 in June

Apr 5, 2010

*Please visit FiveKnuckles.com for more mixed martial arts media*

A third attempt at a long-awaited welterweight rematch between contenders Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves will take place at UFC 115 on June 15 at GM Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

UFC President Dana White announced the match up for UFC 115 early Monday on his official Twitter account.

"ALVES vs FITCH in vancouver!!!!!!" White wrote in the post.

Their first meeting occurred at UFC Fight Night 5 in June 2006, where Fitch walked away with a second-round TKO victory over Alves.

Alves and Fitch were first set to rematch at UFC 107 on Dec. 12, however, Alves was forced out of the event with a knee injury. Then, they were booked yet again to rematch at UFC 111 on March 27. But Alves was forced off the card after a pre-fight CT scan showed an irregularity in the Brazilian's brain. Fitch remained on the card and was matched up against Ben Saunders.

Alves immediately took additional tests from brain specialists, where it was revealed that he had a malformation of the left side of his brain. He has since underwent successful surgery to correct the irregularity.

Fitch (21-3) is currently riding a four-fight winning streak that includes wins over Akihiro Gono, Paulo Thiago, Mike Pierce and, most recently, Saunders at UFC 111. Prior to the wins, he suffered his only Octagon loss against UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre in a welterweight title bout at UFC 87 in August 2008.

Fitch has put together a stellar 12-1 UFC record over four years with the promotion, scoring other notable Octagon wins over the likes of Brock Larson, Josh Burkman, Roan Carneiro, Chris Wilson and Diego Sanchez.

Alves (16-6) has not fought since losing to UFC welterweight champion St. Pierre at UFC 100 last July in his first title shot. Prior to the loss, Alves had won seven straight fights in order to earn the title shot, which included wins over Chris Lytle, Karo Parisyan, Matt Hughes and Josh Koscheck.

Since entering the Octagon for the first time in October 2005, Alves has put together a solid 9-3 record.

Mystery surrounds the UFC 115 main event, as the originally rumored headliner of a third fight between former UFC light-heavyweight champions and TUF 11 coaches Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz has been heavily speculated to be off. Numerous media outlets have reported that former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin is the new opponent for Liddell, however, nothing has been made official by the UFC.

Other interesting bouts rumored for the UFC 115 include Patrick Barry vs. Mirko Filipovic, Ben Rothwell vs. Gilbert Yvel, Martin Kampmann vs. Paulo Thiago and Evan Dunham vs. Tyson Griffin.

5K Exclusive Nick Osipczak: The whole world knows UK MMA is serious.

Apr 3, 2010

Rising star Nick Osipczak made his name on "The Ultimate Fighter" season 9 with a stunning head-kick knockout of Mark Millar, before being narrowly beaten by eventual finalist DaMarques Johnson in one of the most entertaining fights in TUF history.

After leaving the show, Osipczak defeated Frank Lestor at the finale by rear-naked choke before becoming the first person to defeat Matt Riddle when he TKO'd the American in impressive fashion at UFC 105 in Manchester.

Osipczak now faces Rick Story in Abu Dhabi at UFC 112 and he answered the phone to tell FiveKnuckles.com why he's confident of victory.

FiveKnuckles.com: Nick, firstly thank you for taking the time out to do this interview. How are your preparations going for your upcoming bout with Rick Story?

Nick Osipczak: Yeah all spot on. I'm flying out Friday and the camps been good. I feel fit, strong and I can't wait.

5K: How much are you looking forward to fighting in Abu Dhabi?

N.O.: Loads, I actually asked to fight on this card. It's somewhere I wanted to go and this is the first time the UFC have been out there so it's big. I like going to new places and they have spent a lot of money out there so it's good. It's also a great card with two title fights so it's good to be part of it.

5K: Last time out you defeated another wrestler, Matt Riddle, will you look to employ a similar game plan?

N.O.: Yeah they are both wrestlers and southpaws and the first game plan worked out well so it would be silly not to follow it again. Obviously I have made a few tweaks with regards to height and the combinations he likes to throw etc. But I think the advantage is in my favor.

5K: There was a little trash talk between you and Riddle going into the fight at UFC 105, how satisfying was it to get the win in front of the home crowd?

N.O.: Oh immensely (satisfying). I felt the whole crowd were behind me. I think his entrance even riled them up. He's just one of those people. So it's always good to beat a foreign opponent on home soil.

5K: What strengths does Story bring that you will have to look out for?

N.O.: Well his wrestling is his best aspect. And like all wrestlers he has good cardio. He also has a good head in the sense that he doesn't waver much. I think I've got the advantage but his wrestling and his cardio are his best chance.

5K: John Hathaway holds a victory over Story, have you spoken to him at all for any advice?

N.O.: I haven't spoken to him no, but I've watched the fight and I think I've picked up a few things. It's certainly given me confidence that his best strength is his wrestling and John out-wrestled him. That's given me great confidence, but I'm looking to finish.

5K: How much did being a contestant on TUF help your career as a fighter?

N.O.: Loads, and its not only the training and the people you meet. For me, as a fighter I hadn't had many professional fights, so would I have fought in a UFC octagon five times? Finishing four of those fights. So it helps by giving you that familiarity.

5K: How did the TUF opportunity come about?

N.O.: Just word on the street really. It was perfect timing for me, I was 3-0 as a pro, a welterweight and the auditions were in London, where I live so it was just perfect.

5K: On the show you came across as more of a stand-up fighter, but your also good on the ground with a few submissions on your record. What do you prefer?

N.O.: I don't really have a preference. I enjoy both, but I suppose if I had to choose between a submission or a knockout I'd have to go for the knockout. It's more of a crowd favorite. For me though, the main thing is winning in the easiest possibly way depending on my opponent's strengths.

5K: You, Andre Winner and Ross Pearson now train with fellow UFC fighters Dan Hardy and Paul Daley at Nottingham's Rough House Gym. How good has that camp been for you?

N.O.: Really good. One of the main things is our fights are all in close proximity. Dan's just fought, Ross and Andre fight tonight and Paul fights just after me. So we can all help each other prepare. Training for a fight is so much better when everyone else is taking it as serious.

5K: How good is it having fellow welterweights Daley and Hardy around to train with?

N.O.: Quality, that's why I came. They have excellent stand up and it just ups my game. I'm really fortunate to be able to train with them.

5K: Dan recently lost a tough fight to George St. Pierre, but in doing so he showed a lot of heart. What did you make of that fight?

N.O.: Yeah, like you said he showed a lot of heart. He took a lot of what GSP could give him and stuck in there for five rounds. Apart from a couple of sore arms he doesn't really have a mark on him. Paul Daley will be fighting him next after his win over (Josh) Koscheck and hopefully he can do better. But the whole country is proud of Dan. He took the best GSP could do. He didn't do his best, but he will back before long and do much better.

5K: What does that fight, and TUF that you featured on, show for British MMA?

N.O.: It shows that on the ground we can hang in there now. A lot of them are fearful of our striking, but our wrestling needs to be better. The whole word knows that the UK are serious at MMA. We have gained respect now.

5K: How did you first start out in MMA?

N.O.: I watched MMA and realized that it was real fighting, and I just found a good club and went along. I enjoyed it and just took it from there really.

5K: Your background was in Kung Fu, how does that translate into MMA?

N.O.: Well luckily in my style we sparred a lot so that helped. I know that as bad as a lot of these traditional martial arts are, there were some positives. Timing and reflexes were a couple, and it taught me how to throw some pretty decent kicks. It's also the experience of competing that helps.

5K: You were unbeaten at amateur and semi-pro levels, how did that help your professional career?

N.O.: It's just all experience. It all adds up. It just makes you more confident in what you are doing in the gym and helps you realize your potential.

5K: Finally, I believe you were actually a professional gambler at one time? How did that come about?

N.O.: I've always gambled since I was in school, and when I finished uni I just started playing poker. It worked well because I was able to train in MMA full time while I was a pro gambler. So I trained like a pro before I even turned pro.

5K: Do you still play?

N.O.: No, I don't need the stress or the hassle!

5K: Thanks for your time Nick, good luck in your fight.

N.O.: No problem, thanks.

Tampa Bay Storm vs. Tulsa Talons (Week 1 Free Pick from Mike Rose)
Bet: Click here to bet on this game | Odds: Click here for current odds

The Arena Football League betting season kicks off this week with a six-pack of games for football wagering warriors to dig into. As a part of the first weekend of the 23rd season of the AFL, the Tulsa Talons will play host to the Tampa Bay Storm. The Talons, a former af2 team, will be competing in the Southwest Division this year with fellow af2 graduates the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz and Bossier City Battle Wings, along with the expansion Dallas Vigilantes. Tampa Bay will be back in its familiar grounds in the Southeast Division with its arch rivals, the Orlando Predators, but has both the Alabama Vipers and Jacksonville Sharks to beat out to win the divisional crown as well.

Quarterback play is paramount in the AFL, and there aren’t many that did it better two seasons ago than Tampa Bay’s Brett Dietz did. Dietz, who is still only 29 years old, accounted for a total of 90 touchdowns (86 passing) and 4,583 yards in his first full season as the starter for the Storm. Many accept him as the face of this franchise and one of the best quarterbacks in this new league. HC Tim Marcum also brings back a veteran defensive line, including former All-Arena standouts Jermaine Smith, Tim McGill, and Kelvin Kinney.

Whereas the Storm look like the team of old that nearly made the AFL’s postseason in 2008, the Talons look a lot more like a legitimate af2 team to start off the ‘10 campaign. WR Donovan Morgan is going to be one of the most dynamic players in the league if he can break out like he did in ‘08 when he caught 111 passes for 1,281 yards and hauled in 24 touchdowns as a rookie with the Chicago Rush. However, this year, he’ll be catching passes from QB Justin Allgood, who is an unproven commodity at the AFL level but did throw for an af2 record 108 touchdown passes in 2009 with the Talons.

The arena football betting line for this game opened up at Tulsa -2, but has since skyrocketed in the favor of the hosts up to Tampa Bay -7 at the time of publication of this article.

UFC Fight Night 21: "Florian vs. Gomi" is officially in the books and it turned out to be an exciting night of fights for the promotion's return trip back to North Carolina. Here are some interesting tidbits that came out of the post-fight press conference for the event:

-UFC Fight Night 21 drew an estimated 7,700 spectators to the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte for a $590,685 gate, according to UFC officials.

It was the UFC's first event in North Carolina since UFC Fight Night 16 in December 2008. The UFC has held two previous events in Charlotte, the first being UFC 3: "The American Dream" all the way back in in September 1994 and then at UFC 5: "The Return of the Beast"in April 1995.

-The UFC dished out a total of $120,000 in bonus money to four of the 20 fighters who competed in last night's UFC Fight Night 21 event. Headliner Kenny Florian, co-headliner Roy Nelson as well as other main card fighters Ross Pearson and Dennis Siver each earned $30,000 "Fight Night" bonuses for their outstanding performances at the event.

Siver and Pearson earned "Fight of the Night" honors for their exciting, three-round lightweight battle, which saw Pearson earn a unanimous decision win over Siver. Florian took home "Submission of the Night" for his third-round rear-naked choke submission win over Takanori Gomi in the evening's main event.

TUF 10 winner Roy Nelson nabbed "Knockout of the Night" for his first-round knockout win over six-foot-11-inch Dutch youngster, Stevan Struve in the night's co-main event.

UFC 111 weigh-in results

Mar 26, 2010

*Please visit FiveKnuckles.com for more mixed martial arts media*

UFC 111: "St. Pierre vs. Hardy" is officially set to go down as all but one (Rory Markham) of the 20 participants competing on tomorrow night's event successfully made weight earlier today at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

UFC 111 takes place tomorrow, on March 27, and the event's main card will be televised on pay-per-view beginning at 10 p.m. EST.

In addition, the Spike TV broadcast of two select UFC 111 preliminary card bouts, which features a welterweight bout between Matt Brown and Ricardo Almeida as well as a 177-lbs. catchweight bout between Nate Diaz and Rory Markham, begins an hour prior to the PPV start time at 9 p.m. EST.

The event is headlined by a UFC welterweight title bout between current champion Georges St. Pierre and challenger Dan Hardy. Both fighters came in exactly at the 170-pounds mark.

In the co-main event, Frank Mir and Shane Carwin will battle it out in a UFC interim heavyweight title fight, with the winner facing UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar in July barring any serious injures. Carwin looked surprisingly soft as he came in at 265 lbs., and Mir also weighed in at 265 lbs.

Other bouts on the main card include a lightweight showdown between Fabricio Camoes and Kurt Pellegrino. Also, former UFC welterweight title contender Jon Fitch will face Ben Saunders, who was originally scheduled to meet Jake Ellenberger at UFC 111, but pulled out of that fight to replace Thiago Alves against Fitch. Also, rising lightweight contender Jim Miller will meet submission wizard Mark Bocek in the first bout on the televised main card.

The only blemish during today's weigh-in festivities occurred when Rory Markham weighed in at 177 lbs., which is six pounds over the 171-lbs. welterweight limit for his bout against TUF 5 winner Nate Diaz.

Markham reportedly knew prior to the weigh-in that he was not going to be able to make weight, so therefore him and Diaz agreed to a catchweight of 177-lbs. before the weigh-in ceremony. Markham has been fined $1,000 by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (12.5% of a fighter's purse for missing weight), which will be given to Diaz after the fight.

Below are the official weigh-in results for UFC 111:

Televised Main Card:

Georges St. Pierre (170) vs. Dan Hardy (170)

Shane Carwin (265) vs. Frank Mir (265)

Fabricio Camoes (155) vs. Kurt Pellegrino (155)

Jon Fitch (171) vs. Ben Saunders (169)

Mark Bocek (154) vs. Jim Miller (155)

Preliminary Card:

Nate Diaz (171) vs. Rory Markham (177)

Ricardo Almeida (170) vs. Matt Brown (170)

Tomasz Drwal (185) vs. Rousimar Palhares (186)

Jared Hamman (205) vs. Rodney Wallace (206)
