Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s 1-Game Suspension for NSFW Post Dropped by MLB

New York Yankees v Cleveland Guardians

New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. will not be forced to miss time for his NSFW social media post earlier this month.

Per Ronald Blum of the Associated Press, MLB dropped Chisholm's one-game suspension for his ejection against the Tampa Bay Rays on April 18 and subsequent violation of its social media policy following his appeal. His fine reportedly was maintained.

Chisholm was ejected by plate umpire John Bacon in the eighth inning of the Yankees' 6-3 win over the Rays when he argued a called third strike on a pitch from Rays reliever Mason Montgomery that appeared low. It was the first time he was ejected from a game with the Yankees and the fifth ejection of his career.

After being removed from the game, Chisholm tweeted, "Not even f--king close" before deleting the post.

Blum explained that MLB's social media policy prohibits "displaying or transmitting content that questions the impartiality of or otherwise denigrates a major league umpire." Also, players are banned from using electronic devices during games under league rules.

"I didn’t think before I had anything that I said was ejectable but after probably," Chisholm said after his ejection. "I’m a competitor, so when I go out there and I feel like I’m right and you’re saying something to me that I think doesn’t make sense, I’m going to get fired up and be upset."

Chisholm was allowed to continue playing while his appeal delayed any penalties from MLB. In 28 games, he's hitting just .178 with seven home runs and 17 RBI.

The Yankees improved to 17-11 after sweeping Sunday's doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays and will look to keep the momentum going when they visit the Baltimore Orioles (10-17) for Monday's series opener.

Roki Sasaki Told Dodgers Having Japanese-Style Toilets Would Help Contract Decision

Dodgers vs Pirates in Los Angeles, CA

The Los Angeles Dodgers haven't been frugal when it comes to spending money to get talent, but the team took a unique approach to help land Rōki Sasaki this offseason.

Per the Orange County Register's Bill Blunkett, team president and CEO Stan Kasten added Japanese-style toilets to the Dodgers' clubhouse amid a $100 million renovation because Sasaki said having such features could sway his decision of where to sign.

“During our first meeting with Roki, we were telling him about the project we had ongoing to upgrade our clubhouse and facilities,” Kasten said. “I was telling him about all the amenities we were adding. ‘We’re going to have this and this and this.’ And he asked, ‘Are you going to have Japanese-style toilets?’”

Sasaki said after the fact that he was partially joking with Kasten, but having Japanese-style toilets was a preference. He also said Los Angeles' willingness to make the change just to make players more comfortable “was definitely a factor."

“It sounds like a joke. But for me, it’s pretty important,” Sasaki said through an interpreter.

When Sasaki said he wanted Japanese-style toilets, Kasten didn't hesitate to make the change.

“Done. You got it,” Kasten said he told Sasaki at the meeting. “It was a good idea that we got from a player.”

How much of a factor the Japanese-style toilets influenced Sasaki is unclear, but it clearly made some kind of an impact as he ended up signing with the Dodgers in January.

Mets MiLB Pitcher Raimon Gomez Hits 104.5 MPH on Radar Gun, Fastest Pitch in 2025

The New York Mets have a minor-league pitching prospect whose power is well beyond his years.

Mets Class A pitcher Raimon Gomez showed off his strength with a pitch that clocked in at 104.5 mph in Saturday's game for St. Lucie. Per the Associated Press, Statcast ranks it as the fastest pitch thrown during the 2025 season.

The fastest pitch clocked in the majors was 103.7 mph by Oakland Athletics reliever Mason Miller.

Gomez didn't surrender a single hit over three innings of work to help lead St. Lucie to a 4-2 win over Daytona.

A 23-year-old prospect from Venezuela, Gomez spent all of 2024 on the injured list. While he's not ranked as one of the Mets' top 30 prospects by MLB.com, his development appears to be moving in a positive direction with 7.2 scoreless innings to start the 2025 campaign.

Yankees Remove Devin Williams as Closer, Replaced by Luke Weaver, Aaron Boone Says

Toronto Blue Jays v New York Yankees

The New York Yankees plan to remove Devin Williams from his role as the team's closer and instead turn to Luke Weaver, manager Aaron Boone said on Sunday, per ESPN's Jorge Castillo.

Boone said Williams will not be the team's closer "for right now," leaving the door open for his return to the role eventually.

"He's still got everything to be great, right? This is a guy that is in the prime of his career and he's just going through it a little bit," Boone said of Williams. "I tell our players all the time, you make a career that's long enough and you're going to face some challenging moments. You're going to face some adversity along the way. And good news for Devin is he's got everything to get through this and come out better on the other side. And that's my expectation.

"But, for right now, I think it's best for everyone that we pull him out of that role and try and start building some good rhythm and confidence and momentum and fully expect him to be a central figure for us moving forward."

Williams, whom the Yankees acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in December, has an 11.25 ERA and four saves across eight innings in 10 appearances. The former Rookie of the Year is on pace for career-worst numbers in strikeout rate (18.2%), whiff rate (24.1%) and walk rate (15.9%).

Williams gave up three earned runs in a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays last week before giving up three runs in Friday's loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

According to Castillo, Boone said he won't have a specific role for Williams as he tries to overcome his early struggles.

Amid Williams' struggles, Weaver has thrived to start the year. He's recorded 13 strikeouts with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.62 WHIP in 13 innings across 11 games. He also has a pair of saves. In his second season with New York a year ago, Weaver had career bests in ERA (2.89) and WHIP (0.93), posting a 7-3 record and four saves in 62 appearances.

While Weaver will move primarily into a closer role, Boone said he's still willing to look to the pitcher in high-leverage moments early in games, according to Castillo.

Even with Williams' struggles to start the season, the Yankees sit atop the AL East at 15-11 and have posted the ninth-best bullpen ERA in the majors.

MLB Scouts Discuss Pete Alonso's Next FA Contract, 'Best I've Ever Seen Him'

Philadelphia Phillies v New York Mets

Pete Alonso is putting together one of his best stretches of baseball to start the season.

The New York Mets first baseman has six homers and 26 RBI with a .333 batting average through 27 games, recording the third-best OPS in the majors at 1.101. Per The Athletic's Will Sammon, one National League scout said he's currently in his peak form.

“Best I’ve ever seen him,” the NL Scout said. “I’ve seen the peaks of power. But those would typically come with more strikeouts, less on base. This is the complete package.”

The hot start to the year comes after an offseason in which the 30-year-old inked a two-year, $54 million deal. The contract he signed this offseason also comes with a player option next offseason, though, meaning Alonso could opt out of the deal and potentially earn a big payday in free agency.

Sammon asked several scouts whether Alonso would be worth a long-term investment, and the answers differed. While one NL scout still sees him "as a long-term concern," another believes he could have a handful of teams interested in him if he keeps up his production.

“There will be some regression, of course,” the scout said, “but if he has the kind of season it looks like he may have, it was a great strategy on his part to have the player option for Year 2, and I would think there would be some teams lining up for three or four years.”

Alonso was far from the best version of himself in 2024, but he's clearly made strides over the offseason. If he can keep playing like he has to start the year, opting out of his contract and hitting the free agent market could be the best move in 2026.

Yankees' Aaron Boone Talks Possibly Removing Devin Williams As Closer Amid Struggles

New York Yankees v Tampa Bay Rays

After another rough outing on Friday night, Devin Williams could lose his job as closer for the New York Yankees.

Speaking to reporters following a 4-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said "we'll see" when asked if he would keep Williams in the closer's role.

"We'll have a talk through that stuff," Boone added. "This is raw right now. We want to do everything we can to get him right because we know how good he is and how valuable he's going to be for us."

Williams entered in the ninth inning with the Yankees leading 2-1. He allowed three runs on two hits and a hit-by-pitch before being replaced by Mark Leiter Jr. after facing just three hitters.

Friday was the first time Williams has pitched in six days. His previous outing saw him give up four runs (three earned) on three hits and one walk in a 10-8 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on April 19.

Even when Williams hasn't been giving up runs, he's not dominating like he did throughout basically all of his run with the Milwaukee Brewers. The 30-year-old had four straight scoreless outings prior to April 19, but he only struck out three of the 16 batters he faced.

Williams has an 11.25 ERA with nearly as many walks (seven) as strikeouts (eight) in eight innings over 10 appearances. The right-hander has allowed at least three earned runs three times this season, matching his total from the previous six years combined.

The Yankees' acquisition of Williams in the offseason was meant to add more depth to their bullpen after losing Clay Holmes in free agency. It looked like a nice move on paper since he has been one of the most valuable relievers in all of baseball since his debut in 2019.

While it's still early in the season, there are plenty of reasons to be concerned. Williams' average fastball velocity is at 93.2 mph, the lowest of his career and down one full mile per hour from 2024. His whiff (24.1 percent) and strikeout (18.2) percentages are down more than 20 percent compared to last season.

Boone does have reliable options he could go to in the ninth inning if he decides to make a change. Fernando Cruz has a 1.93 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 14 innings. Luke Weaver has yet to allow a run in 13 innings over 11 appearances.

Despite Williams' late-game struggles, the Yankees are sitting in first place in the AL East with a 15-11 record. They are two games up in the loss column on the Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox.

Cubs Reportedly Backed Out of Jesus Luzardo Trade with Marlins Due to Medical Concerns

Miami Marlins v Philadelphia Phillies

The Chicago Cubs reportedly "had a trade in place with the Miami Marlins for left-hander Jesús Luzardo" this past offseason, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, "but backed out after a review of his medical records."

So the Marlins instead traded Luzardo and prospect Paul McIntosh to the Philadelphia Phillies for prospects Starlyn Caba and outfielder Emaarion Boyd. He's been fantastic in Philly, going 2-0 in five starts with a 2.08 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 36 strikeouts in 30.1 innings.

Rosenthal noted that "concerns over Luzardo's back and elbow made the Cubs reluctant to pay the agreed-upon acquisition cost" after he missed time in 2024 with elbow tightness and a lumbar stress reaction.

The Phillies clearly didn't share those same concerns.

"I've had plenty of players where one club hasn't taken a player because of medicals and another club has, and the player is fine," Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told reporters. "Everybody has their own standards, how they read certain injuries. Our (doctors and athletic trainers)—and knock on wood, because you never know what happens—have been very good at analyzing guys for us. And they have turned guys down at times, too, for us. But they felt they would be able to keep (Luzardo) healthy."

Ad Placeholder

The Phillies will have Luzardo through at least the 2026 season, though next winter they will need to go through the arbitration process with him again.

The Cubs, meanwhile, added pitchers Matthew Boyd (2.54 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) and Colin Rea (1.32 ERA, 1.10 WHIP) in free agency, and both have been very good for the team to this point. In this case, perhaps both the Cubs and Phillies are perfectly fine with their Luzardo decisions.

Pirates vs. Dodgers Betting Odds, Player Props, Picks for April 25

Joe Tansey
Apr 25, 2025

The two favorites to win the National League Cy Young Award face off at Dodger Stadium on Friday night.

Paul Skenes is listed ahead of Yoshinobu Yamamoto to win the Cy Young, but on Friday, Yamamoto is the favored pitcher.

The Dodgers are not just favored to take down Skenes, but they are the third-largest favorite on Friday’s Major League Baseball board at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto Over 6.5 Strikeouts (-170)

Yamamoto has gone over this number in three of his five starts, and each time he's gone over, he's done so easily.

The Japanese right-hander fanned 10 batters twice, once against Texas and one versus Detroit, and he whiffed nine batters in a matchup with the Chicago Cubs.

Ad Placeholder

The Pirates have the eighth-most punchouts against right-handers. In comparison, the Cubs are fourth, Detroit is 17th and Texas is 19th.

As a whole, the Pirates have the fifth-most strikeouts. The Cubs and Tigers both rank in the top 12 in overall strikeouts.

Yamamoto has a similarly favorable matchup on paper on Friday as he did in the outings versus the Cubs and Tigers. Both of those high totals were recorded inside Dodger Stadium.

The blueprint to get to seven K's is almost too easy for Yamamoto, and because of that, you should look into betting his strikeout ladder as well.

Paul Skenes Over 4.5 Hits Allowed (-110)

The Dodgers did not seem to be overwhelmed by Skenes’ stuff in two meetings last season.

Skenes gave up seven earned runs on 12 hits and was tagged for three home runs over 12 innings.

Ad Placeholder

Shohei Ohtani, Teoscar Hernandez and Andy Pages went deep off Skenes. Ohtani went 2-for-6 with a home run and Hernandez went 3-for-5 with a long ball against the reigning NL Rookie of the Year.

On top of that familiarity, Skenes has allowed six hits in two of his five starts this season and hasn’t had more than seven strikeouts in a single outing in 2025.

More balls are being put in play against Skenes, and with that comes a higher chance for hits compared to the back end of 2024, when he was hitting the eight-to-nine strikeout range with more regularity.

Dodgers -1.5 Run Line (+110)

Ad Placeholder

Yamamoto is the more trustworthy shutdown pitcher at this early stage of the season.

Additionally, the Dodgers are far more likely to change the game with one swing. They are tied for the league lead in homers at 41, while Pittsburgh only has 20. The Dodgers have more home runs at home than the Pirates do as a team.

Los Angeles is 4-1 on the run line this season with Yamamoto on the mound and Pittsburgh’s last two losses with Skenes starting were by multiple runs.
