Deshaun Watson's Future with Browns Will Be Evaluated 'at a Later Moment,' GM Says

Nov 6, 2024

Despite Deshaun Watson's struggles on the field and his season-ending injuries in back-to-back years, the Cleveland Browns aren't ruling out bringing back the veteran quarterback in 2025.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Browns general manager Andrew Berry would only say that Watson's status would be evaluated "at a later moment" when asked about his standing with the organization.

"Really our focus with Deshaun, I would say for any player with a season-ending injury and a major injury, is first and foremost and to make sure that he gets healthy from the Achilles injury," Berry said. "Everything else, we'll deal with at a later moment."

This is the first indication that anyone with the Browns has given that Watson might not return next season.

Even during his worst moments on the field this season, head coach Kevin Stefanski didn't even entertain benching Watson when asked about it.

"We're not changing quarterbacks," Stefanski told reporters after a 34-13 loss to the Washington Commanders on Oct. 6. "We need to play better, I need to coach better. That's really what it is."

The decision was taken out of Stefanski's hands when Watson suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in the second quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 20. It's the second time in as many years his season ended due to an injury. He suffered a shoulder injury that limited him to six games before undergoing season-ending surgery in 2023.

Even before the Achilles injury put Watson on the shelf, he was playing so badly this season that The Ringer's Austin Gayle wrote a column on Oct. 14 breaking down the 12 stats that show how poorly things were going.

Among the stats included were that Watson had the same number of touchdowns in the previous two games as Browns safety Rodney McLeod Jr.; the Browns at one point had a streak of 26 consecutive failed third-down conversions with Watson under center; and Watson's total EPA on dropbacks through the first six weeks was worse than JaMarcus Russell's for the first six weeks of the 2009 season (minus-66.2 to minus-62.8).

Another issue aside from performance is Watson just hasn't been available during his three seasons with the Browns.

When you include his 11-game suspension to start the 2022 season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy stemming from allegations from multiple women of sexual misconduct and sexual assault, Watson has only played in 19 games in three years since being traded to Cleveland.

Moving on from Watson would be easier said than done because the Browns gave him a fully-guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract when they acquired him. His contract has been restructured in each of the past two years, with one void year being tacked on at the end both times.

Watson's cap hit is $72.9 million in 2025 and 2026, with dead cap charges of $172.8 million and $99.8 million. The Browns would take a $72.9 million cap hit if they designated him as a post-June 1 cut next year, but it would be almost $100 million in 2026.

Even in this era where teams have shown a willingness to take on massive dead-cap charges to get rid of quarterbacks they don't want anymore, Watson's would be next level for a team that already has cap concerns going into the offseason.

Maybe there's a chance that Watson might give up some of the money he is owed to facilitate a trade to get a fresh start, but why would he do that when the Browns were willing to take the risk of giving him the contract in the first place?

Watson has thrown for 3,365 yards with 19 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a 67.8 completion percentage in 19 starts in three seasons with the Browns.

NFL Rumors: David Njoku 'Highly Unlikely' to Be Traded by Browns Ahead of Deadline

Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku is "highly unlikely" to be traded before the 5 p.m. ET deadline on Tuesday, according to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz.

Despite receiving several calls from other teams regarding his availability, Njoku is viewed as part of the Browns' long-term plans.

Njoku and the Browns are 2-7 this season as the tight end has posted 30 receptions for 255 yards and two touchdowns.

The 28-year-old has spent all eight seasons in the NFL with the Browns, recording 3,519 total yards and 27 touchdowns over 101 games.

He is currently signed to a four-year, $54.8 million contract with the Browns. Trading him would lead to a $20.9 million cap hit, while retaining him would require a $14.3 million cash commitment and a cap figure of $22.2 million.

For now, the veteran Browns player will remain in Cleveland as the team heads into its bye week.

Browns' Jerry Jeudy Praises Jameis Winston's Leadership: 'He Gets You Hype'

Jameis Winston's positive attitude appears to be rubbing off on his Cleveland Browns teammates.

Winston was thrust into the starting role after incumbent starter Deshaun Watson went down with a torn Achilles in Week 7. In his first start in Week 8, Winston showed that he was up to the task in a 29-24 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Winston went 27-of-41 for 334 yards and three touchdowns in the victory and appears to be fully in command of the offense. That was supported by wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, who noted that Winston's ability to motivate is helpful.

"He gets you locked in for sure," Jeudy said, per Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN. "He gets you turnt. He gets you hype. He's always going to have a little funny saying in between that gets you joking around and makes sure that you can have fun with this as well."

Jeudy had five catches for 79 yards in the Week 8 win. It was his best game of the season, and Cleveland will hope that Winston can help unlock the 25-year-old's potential in Kevin Stefanski's offense.

While Winston's performance was a huge push for Cleveland, the team still has a lot of work ahead of it. The Browns are currently 2-6 and sit in last place in the AFC North. While Winston should provide a spark, the team will hope the positive momentum can stay for a bit and help the team climb back into the playoff race.

Cleveland will face the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 9.

NFL Trade Rumors: Za'Darius Smith a 'Hot Name'; Browns Want 'Really Good' Day 3 Pick

Cleveland Browns defensive end Za'Darius Smith is a "hot name" right now as the Nov. 5 trade deadline approaches, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, who added the team wants a "really good Day 3 pick" in return.

"He is a hot name right now," Fowler told SportsCenter.

"The Detroit Lions desperately need a pass-rusher after injuries. The teams I've talked to believe the Browns want a really good Day 3 pick for Smith, so maybe a fourth-rounder or so would probably get it done. But I'm told the Browns are open to keeping him to because they have him under contract for two years and he's been playing well for them. A name to watch, could be moved at the deadline."

The 32-year-old is a 10-year NFL veteran and has amassed a team-high five sacks for the Browns this season.

The Detroit Lions are an obvious trading partner for the Browns. Star pass-rusher Aidan Hutchinson suffered a fractured fibula and tibia and is expected to miss the entire season, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. The NFC-leading 6-1 Lions could use reinforcements as they aim for a first Super Bowl in franchise history, so Smith could be an option here.

Hutchinson was having a phenomenal season, amassing 7.5 sacks and 17 quarterback hits in just five games. No other Lion has more than 2.5 sacks or seven QB hits. While Smith won't replace his production (few pass-rushers could), he's exceptional in his own right and would be a huge pickup for a team in need of help.

As Fowler said, though, the Browns could just keep Smith, who is under contract through 2025. He is one of the team's best defensive players. And while the team is likely missing the playoffs at 2-6, it's getting some momentum in its sails after a dramatic 29-24 win over the 5-3 Baltimore Ravens last Sunday under quarterback Jameis Winston, who made his first career start in Cleveland.

The Browns could keep Smith and hope for a strong second half to the season and maybe an outside shot at a wild-card berth.

At any rate, Smith is a key name to watch as the trade deadline approaches. Wide receivers have moved frequently in recent days, including Amari Cooper, who went from Cleveland to the Buffalo Bills. Perhaps a pass-rusher goes soon now, with Smith's name mentioned here.

Jameis Winston Will Remain Browns' QB1 After Win vs. Lamar Jackson, Ravens

After leading his team to an upset win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, Jameis Winston will remain under center for the Cleveland Browns.

Per NFL insider Andrew Siciliano, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed Winston would be the starter during Monday's press conference.

"Jameis is the starter," Stefanski said.

Winston took over as the Browns' starter last week after Deshaun Watson suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 7.

Though it was his first start since 2022, Winston was electric, throwing for 334 yards and three touchdowns on 27-of-41 passing. He capped off the tremendous performance with a game-winning 38-yard touchdown pass to Cedric Tillman with just a minute left to play.

Winston's 334 yards set a franchise record for the most passing yards in a Browns debut.

"(Eminem) said 'you only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow, this opportunity lasts once in a lifetime,'" Winston said after the win.

The win marked the Browns' first since Week 2, snapping a five-game losing skid that included losses to the New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders and others.

With the win against the Ravens, Cleveland seems to have found new life and is now looking to turn things around to mount a playoff push. A 2-6 start certainly makes things difficult, but the Browns have a somewhat manageable slate in the coming weeks as they'll face the Los Angeles Chargers, New Orleans Saints, Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos.

If Winston can lead Cleveland past one of the best teams in the league, grabbing a few wins over the next month is well within reason.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Hypes Myles Garrett's 'Terminator' Costume: '10/10. No Notes.'

Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett's Terminator Halloween costume attracted plenty of attention and drew praise from Arnold Schwarzenegger himself.

The Terimnator actor and former bodybuilder complimented Garrett's ensemble in a post on X.

Garrett wore the costume ahead of the Browns' surprising 29-24 win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. While the five-time Pro Bowl pass-rusher wasn't able to record a sack, Cleveland still took down Ravens signal-caller Lamar Jackson three times during the victory.

As he's developed into one of the NFL's best defensive players, Garrett has also celebrated Halloween with unique costumes each year.

He also decorated his yard with gravestones representing opposing quarterbacks during his 2021 campaign.

Although his sack total is relatively low this season, Garrett has still remained a crucial part of the Browns' front seven after winning Defensive Player of the Year in 2023.

He's recorded four sacks, seven tackles for loss and two forced fumbles this season. Pro Football Focus has given him an impressive 91.5 grade in 2024, as his 36 total pressures rank No. 5 among all players.

He'll attempt to lead the Browns to a second consecutive win against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 9.

Cedric Tillman Admits 'I Was Laughing' During Jameis Winston's Viral Pregame Speech

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Cedric Tillman has revealed he couldn't keep a straight face during Jameis Winston's pregame speech on Sunday.

"I'm not gonna lie, I was laughing a little," he told Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

The veteran quarterback's passionate speeches have become well-known, and he gave his Browns teammates another one before a surprising 29-24 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Winston finished 27-of-41 for 334 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception in his first start of the season. Meanwhile, Tillman hauled in seven of his nine targets for a team-high 99 yards and two touchdowns.

The signal-caller also went viral for channeling Eminem in his postgame comments, reciting lyrics from "Lose Yourself" when discussing the victory:

Winston, 30, signed a one-year contract with Cleveland as a free agent in March. He was expected to serve as a depth option behind Deshaun Watson and was eventually listed as the Browns' No. 3 quarterback behind Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

Watson suffered a season-ending ruptured Achilles during Cleveland's 21-14 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 7, while Thompson-Robinson also exited the game due to a finger injury.

This led to Winston earning the starting role against Baltimore, and he exceeded expectations.

As for Tillman, he's already recorded 189 yards this season following his breakout performance on Sunday after racking up just 224 yards in 14 games during his 2023 campaign.

Both players will look to continue building momentum as the Browns host the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 9.

Jameis Winston stepped up for the Cleveland Browns in a huge way on Sunday, throwing for 334 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in his team's stunning 29-24 upset win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Winston, who stepped into the starting role after the season-ending Achilles injury to Deshaun Watson, quoted a "white boy from Detroit named Eminem" in his postgame comments, rattling off the famous lyrics from "Lose Yourself" while describing the win:

Even before Watson's injury, several fans and pundits believed the Browns should have turned to Winston as the starter, given the dreadful play of the incumbent. Winston—who actually served as the third-string quarterback last week—also expressed belief that he was still a capable starter.

"I view this as an opportunity to go out there and be my very best," he told reporters during the week. "And when I'm my very best, I'm a great NFL starter."

At least on Sunday, Winston looked the part, and all of the people calling for Watson's demotion and Winston's promotion earlier in the season looked pretty smart.

During Cleveland's first seven games, Watson threw for 1,148 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions, taking a whopping 33 sacks. On Sunday, Winston accumulated over a third of that yardage, over half of those touchdowns and was only sacked twice.

More importantly, he avoided the biggest Kryptonite of his career—turnovers.

"I thought he played well," head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters after the game. "I thought the protection was outstanding all day. I thought the guys really took the challenge of that. And I thought he got through his reads and the guys got open. He made good decisions. It wasn't perfect, he's not going to play perfect, I'm not gonna coach perfect. But I thought he played well."

It was as almost as if Winston learned he would start and said to himself, "Now this looks like a job for me. So everybody, just follow me."

And the result was a dub.

Jameis Winston Wows NFL Fans with GW TD as Browns Upset Lamar Jackson, Ravens

In his first start of the season, Jameis Winston led the Cleveland Browns to a 29-24 upset win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Winston threw for 334 passing yards and three touchdowns. As the Browns trailed by one point late in the fourth, Winston drove Cleveland 69 yards down the field and completed a pass to Cedric Tillman for the go-ahead touchdown that ended up being the game-winner as Baltimore couldn't answer.

After the electric performance and game-winning drive from Winston, fans had high praise for the veteran.

Before Sunday, Winston hadn't started a game since 2022 when he was with the New Orleans Saints. He also hasn't been a starter for a full season since 2019 when he threw 30 interceptions while with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Since that season, he's been trying to prove he's capable of leading a team to wins, and he might have done it on Sunday.

Winston snapped a five-game losing streak and provided new energy to a team desperate for a turnaround with the win over the Ravens. Cleveland still has a long way to go to be viewed as a legitimate playoff contender, but Sunday was a step in the right direction and the Browns are hoping Winston can carry his momentum into the rest of the year.

After the upset win over Baltimore, the Browns get a much more manageable opponent next week when they face the Los Angeles Chargers. If they can pick up another win, they could head into their bye week with plenty of confidence.

NFL Trade Rumors: Za'Darius Smith Eyed with Myles Garrett, Maxx Crosby Unavailable

NFL teams looking for pass-rushing help ahead of the Nov. 5 trade deadline will reportedly have to settle for options beyond the headline names.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday the Las Vegas Raiders will not make Maxx Crosby available. The update comes after NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported the Cleveland Browns do not plan on trading Myles Garrett.

Cleveland may move another defensive end, though, as Schefter called Za'Darius Smith "one of the most logical pass-rushing trade targets" given the updates around Crosby and Garrett.

It is anything but surprising the Browns may trade Smith, as they are 1-6 and largely playing out the string on what is shaping up to be a lost season.

They already traded wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills, and quarterback Deshaun Watson is out for the season with an Achilles injury. While trading someone like Garrett, who is one of the best players in the entire league, would bring in a larger return package, the team surely wants him to anchor its defense in future seasons.

Garrett is under contract through the 2026 season, while the 2025 campaign is the final one on Smith's current deal.

Smith may be a consolation prize for teams that were interested in Garrett and Crosby, but he has an impressive resume that includes three Pro Bowl selections. The 32-year-old has played for the Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings and Browns since he was a fourth-rounder in the 2015 NFL draft.

This is his second year with Cleveland, and he already has four sacks through seven games. He also isn't far removed from the 2022 season when he posted 10 sacks, which was the third time in a four-year span he reached double-digit sacks.

While Smith has benefited from playing alongside Garrett, who is constantly drawing double teams, he could provide veteran leadership for a team down the stretch as he pursues the first Super Bowl ring of his career.

And Cleveland could get a draft pick in return as it attempts to accelerate a rebuild during a disappointing season.
