Calvin Booth Reportedly Interviews With Hawks Amid Nuggets Exit

DENVER NUGGETS VS ORLANDO MAGIC, NBA

After his departure from the Denver Nuggets following the expiration of his contract, former general manager Calvin Booth reportedly is eyeing a move to the East Coast.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Booth was among the candidates to interview with the Atlanta Hawks, who are searching for a president of basketball operations.

The Hawks fired general manager Landry Fields last month and promoted Onsi Saleh to replace him. Still, the team initiated a search for a president of basketball operations to create a new power structure in its front office. In addition to Booth interviewing with Atlanta, Stein reported that former Sacramento Kings general manager Monte McNair also met with the organization.

"Booth and McNair are among the five GMs leaguewide — along with Atlanta's Fields, Phoenix's Jones and New Orleans' David Griffin — to lose their jobs in the past month," Stein explained. "For the Hawks' purposes, Booth's scouting acumen and strong reputation as a talent evaluator could pair well with Saleh's strategic expertise. McNair, meanwhile, just worked in a two-executive structure alongside Wes Wilcox with the Kings."

Booth was dismissed alongside former Nuggets head coach Michael Malone with just days left in the regular season. ESPN's Tim MacMahon and Ramona Shelburne reported that team president Josh Kroenke "held Malone and Booth responsible for allowing their personal issues to negatively affect the organization." Denver advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals on Saturday with a dominant win over the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 7.

If Booth lands with the Hawks, he will certainly be hoping to have similar success after he helped construct a roster that won the Nuggets' first championship in franchise history in 2023.

Hawks' Dyson Daniels Voted NBA's 2025 Defensive Player of the Year in Poll of Coaches

Miami Heat v Atlanta Hawks - Play-In Tournament

If the NBA coaches had a say in the awards voting, Atlanta Hawks guard Dyson Daniels would win Defensive Player of the Year.

In a poll of 13 head coaches and assistants conducted by The Athletic's Josh Robbins, Daniels was voted the best defensive player for the 2024-25 season with six first-place votes and 42 total points.

"Dyson Daniels has established himself as one of the elite perimeter defenders in the league, leading the league in steals and doing some things we haven’t seen in a long time," one coach said to explain their vote.

Daniels is one of three finalists for the actual Defensive Player of the Year award voted on by the media, along with Evan Mobley of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors.

One interesting note from the coaches vote, which admittedly is a small sample size, is Mobley didn't even make the top three. Oklahoma City Thunder wing Luguentz Dort finished second with four first-place votes and 24 points, followed by Green in third (two first-place votes, 18 points). Mobley came in fourth place.

Green's late-season campaigning for the award definitely seems to have resonated with voters. It doesn't hurt that the Warriors had the best defensive rating in the NBA over the final two months of the regular season.

Daniels would be an interesting Defensive Player of the Year winner because the Hawks' defense overall is not very good. They ranked 19th in rating and 27th in points allowed per game this season.

The last player to win Defensive Player of the Year on a team that ranked outside the top 10 in rating is Marcus Camby with the 2006-07 Denver Nuggets (11th).

Daniels had a terrific season for the Hawks after being acquired from the New Orleans Pelicans as part of the Dejounte Murray trade. He led the NBA in total steals (229) and steals per game (3.0) in 76 starts.

Landry Fields Fired as Hawks GM After Missing NBA Playoff Bracket; Onsi Saleh Replaces

After disappointingly having their season end in the play-in tournament for the second straight year, the Atlanta Hawks are making a major change.

The Hawks announced on Monday that general manager Landry Fields has been fired after three seasons in the role. Assistant GM Onsi Saleh has been promoted to GM as Fields' replacement.

The team also announced that it will begin the search for a president of basketball operations and hired Sportsology Group to lead the process. Saleh will oversee day-to-day basketball operations for the time being.

"Every offseason we evaluate how we operate and ways we can improve our organization," principal owner Tony Ressler said in a release. "As we enter this pivotal offseason, we have several complex decisions ahead of us, and we are committed to providing the human and financial resources needed to ensure that we navigate these decisions with a high level of precision and foresight. Adding an accomplished, senior-level leader to provide strategic direction and structure as well as partnering with Onsi and our talented front office is a top priority."

Ressler continued: "I would genuinely like to thank Landry for his leadership during his time with us. Landry made our franchise better and left contributions that have positioned us for growth. I am grateful for his dedication and wish him success in his next endeavor."

According to NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, the Philadelphia 76ers' Elton Brand is expected to be among the candidates for the Hawks' lead executive job.

The Hawks went 40-42 and lost to the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat in the play-in tournament, failing to secure the seventh or eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. Atlanta has not advanced past the first round of the playoffs since its impressive run to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021.

The top priority for Saleh and the eventual president of basketball operations will be to figure out a plan for star point guard Trae Young. There is speculation that the Hawks' recent lack of success could make Young a trade candidate this summer, so the new regime will have some major decisions to make sooner rather than later.

NBA Ref Explains Trae Young's Ejection After Hawks' NBA Play-In Loss vs. Magic

Atlanta Hawks v Orlando Magic - Play-In Tournament

Trae Young's night came to an end prematurely on Tuesday as the Atlanta Hawks fell to the Orlando Magic in the NBA play-in tournament.

The point guard was ejected with about four minutes left in the fourth quarter after picking up two quick technical fouls—the first for throwing the ball at an official and the second for kicking the ball away before the Magic shot free throws.

Crew Chief James Williams explained the decision to eject Young during a pool report interview with the Orlando Sentinel's Jason Beede (via Andscape's Marc J. Spears).

"He received his second unsportsmanlike technical foul for kicking the ball away and making a mockery of the game as were were attempting to shoot the free throw for the first technical foul," Williams said. "And by rule when the player receives two unsportsmanlike fouls he's ejected from the game."

Young said his frustrations mounted after he felt the Magic's physicality got out of hand.

"They're a physical team. I've had two teammates hurt this year in one game against them," he said, per the Associated Press (via ESPN). "I'm not going to call them dirty players or anything like that. I think they have a lot of talented players. But a lot of the plays and the moments ... it's not even necessarily basketball at that point. I think that's where the frustration got."

It was a frustrating fourth quarter for Young and the Hawks. Atlanta trailed by just six points heading into the final quarter, but the Magic went on a run and were up 20 by the time Young was ejected.

His frustration boiled over as the door closed on Atlanta's hopes of securing the No. 7 seed.

Young plays the game with plenty of passion, and sometimes he's passionate to a fault. He picked up 14 technical fouls this season, tied for the fifth most in the NBA.

Despite the ejection, the 26-year-old had a good game, posting a game-high 28 points along with six assists. Ultimately, though, it wasn't enough to lead Atlanta to a win.

Young and the Hawks will now need to put the frustrating game behind them as they shift their focus a play-in game that will decide their postseason fate. Atlanta will face the winner of the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat's matchup. A win on Friday means a first-round matchup against the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers, while a loss means the offseason starts early.

The Hawks' season ended in the play-in tournament a year ago, and they're hoping to have a deeper postseason run this year.

"I'm not going to let the refs frustrate me like that in our next game," Young said. "I know we've got to win or go home next game, and I'm going to be ready."

Trae Young Ejected, Ripped by Fans as Hawks Lose to Magic in NBA Play-in Tournament

2025 SoFi Play-In Tournament - Atlanta Hawks v Orlando Magic

Tuesday couldn't have gone much worse for Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks, who fell 120-95 in an NBA play-in tournament game against the host Orlando Magic.

Young scored 28 points, but he finished minus-22 and got ejected in the fourth quarter after picking up two technicals.

Young hit a floater in the lane with 4:48 remaining in regulation, but the game was essentially over with the Magic up 107-87.

The ball found its way back to Young, who fired a hard pass at the referee standing on the baseline. The ref called a technical and then rolled the ball down the court to a second official to set up an Orlando free throw.

However, Young blocked the ball from going to that second official with his feet, gathered it and then faked giving it back to the ref. A second T followed, and Young immediately walked off the court.

It was a tough look for Young to cap a complete meltdown from the Hawks, who were outscored 32-17 in the first quarter but cut the lead to three in the third quarter.

The Magic rolled down the stretch, though, thanks largely to Cole Anthony dropping a team-high 26 points off the bench and fellow sub Anthony Black also excelling with 16.

Meanwhile, this has been a frustrating season in Atlanta, which has dealt with key injuries (e.g. Jalen Johnson, Clint Capela) but still finished eighth in the Eastern Conference. Young has had to carry more of an offensive burden, and he engineered a nice personal comeback for a moment following a scoreless first quarter.

Then the fourth-quarter meltdown arrived. Fans reacted to Young on social media afterward.

The Hawks will now host the winner of the Chicago Bulls vs. Miami Heat play-in tournament game to determine the Eastern Conference's No. 8 seed, which will play the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round. Meanwhile, the Magic will now play the Boston Celtics in the first round.

Hawks' Dyson Daniels Reportedly Agrees to 4-Year Adidas Contract amid Breakout Season

Dyson Daniels is going to have some representation on the shoe market.

Shams Charania of ESPN reported that Daniels is signing a four-year shoe endorsement deal with Adidas.

Daniels is the current NBA steals leader and in the running for the Defensive Player of the Year Award. He is averaging 3.1 steals per game, which is the most since John Stockton averaged 3.2 steals in 1988-89.

Daniels is in his 3rd NBA season after being selected eighth overall in 2022. He is averaging 14.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 69 games for Atlanta in 2024.

This has been a big step up from his previous two seasons as he averaged 5.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 2023-24 and 3.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 2022-23.

He set the Hawks single-season steals record Sunday night with his 213th steal of the season. With 10 games remaining on the schedule, he could move up the ranks in the all-time leaders but is pretty far off of Alvin Robertson's overall record of 301.

Still, Dyson has emerged as one of the better perimeter defenders in the NBA and should have a bright future with Atlanta. Adidas appears to have recognized this and soon Dyson could be making plays with some special shoes.

Clint Capela Reportedly Expected to Leave Hawks in 2025 NBA Free Agency

Clint Capela's time with the Atlanta Hawks may be coming to a close soon.

Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that the "expectation" around the league is that the 30-year-old will depart Atlanta in unrestricted free agency following the 2024-25 season.

"After being benched in favor of Onyeka Okongwu and dangled in trade talks before the deadline, the early expectation is Hawks center Clint Capela will sign elsewhere in unrestricted free agency this summer," Scotto wrote.

Capela has averaged 8.9 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 55 games for Atlant this season. He's made 41 starts, but the emergence of Okongwu has led to Capela seeing more time on the bench.

Despite a reduced role, Capela should still have a solid market in the offseason as teams look to shore up the center position.

While he may be elsewhere next season, Atlanta will hope he can contribute to the team's quest for a playoff berth. The Hawks are currently 35-38, good for seventh in the Eastern Conference. The team is 5.5 games behind the Milwaukee Bucks for the sixth seed, which would help the team avoid the play-in tournament.

Trae Young was seen as one of the biggest All-Star Game snubs when the rosters were initially revealed, but the Atlanta Hawks guard will participate in the contest after all.

ESPN's Shams Charania noted Monday that Young will replace the injured Giannis Antetokounmpo in the All-Star Game.

This comes after NBA insider Chris Haynes reported the Milwaukee Bucks star will be sidelined for two to three weeks because of a calf strain.

Antetokounmpo isn't the only notable name who will miss the event on Feb. 16.

Haynes also reported that Dallas Mavericks big man Anthony Davis will not participate because of an adductor strain he suffered in his first game with his new team after he was traded by the Los Angeles Lakers.

This year's All-Star Game in San Francisco will look a bit different than in the past, as there will be a four-team tournament instead of the traditional one-game format.

TNT broadcasters Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O'Neal drafted three of the teams from the list of players who were selected for the event, and the fourth squad will be the winning Rising Stars team.

Barkley selected Antetokounmpo, while O'Neal ended up with Davis:

The outlook of the roster will change with Young taking Antetokounpo's place, as the former is a ball-handling guard who is best known for his ability to launch three-pointers from well beyond the arc. By comparison, Antetokounmpo is nearly unstoppable when attacking the rim but isn't known for his prowess from deep.

This is the fourth All-Star Game of Young's career after he previously made it in 2020, 2022 and 2024. He is averaging 23.5 points, a league-best 11.4 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game while shooting 40.9 percent from the field and 34 percent from deep.

His passing and assist totals were a primary reason he was seen as a snub before being named as an injury replacement.

With that as the backdrop, look for him to play the role of facilitator in an event that is usually fast-paced with little defensive effort. He can create excitement with lob passes and then take advantage of the space if the defense collapses toward the rim later in the game.
