FSU Paid Memphis $1.3M for CFB Matchup Before Seminoles Lost, Dropped to 0-3

Florida State struggled throughout a 20-12 loss to Memphis on Saturday, falling to 0-3 on the season in the process.

The Seminoles paid their opponents $1.3 million guaranteed to set up the contest, per Front Office Sports.

After starting off the season ranked No. 10 in the country, Florida State became the first team in AP poll history to start within the top 10 and lose three consecutive games to unranked teams to begin the year (via CBS Sports' Brandon Marcello).

The Seminoles also became the third team since 1988 to open the season with a record of 0-3 following a top-10 ranking to begin the year.

Even though 2023 first-string quarterback Jordan Travis was selected by the New York Jets in the 2024 NFL draft, the start of Florida State's 2024 campaign has been extremely disappointing after finishing with a 13-1 record to go along with an ACC title last season.

Starting quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei couldn't break free from the inconsistency that has plagued his start to the season, completing just 53.3 percent of his throws for 201 yards and an interception on Saturday.

Adding even more insult to injury, Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell left Memphis to join Florida State in Dec. 2019 after spending four years with the program. The $1.3 million payment was finalized six months after Norvell was hired and must be paid on or before Feb. 15, 2025 (via USA Today's Scooby Axson).

It's not the first time that a school has spent money on a loss in 2024, as Notre Dame previously agreed to pay $1.4 million to Northern Illinois before losing 16-14 on Sept. 7. Montana State was also given $360,000 to face off against New Mexico, coming back from a fourth-quarter deficit to win by the final score of 35-31 on Aug. 24.

After the Seminoles narrowly missed a College Football Playoff appearance last season, they're still searching for their first win of the year after three games played.

FSU's DJ Uiagalelei, Norvell Ripped by CFB Fans for Memphis Upset for 3rd Loss

Florida State's nightmare start to the 2024 season continued on Saturday, falling to Memphis by the final score of 20-12.

After starting off the season ranked No. 10 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, the Seminoles are now 0-3.

D.J. Uiagalelei was inconsistent under center once again, finishing 16-of-30 for 201 yards to go along with an interception. He was sacked four times and lost 16 yards on his nine rush attempts.

https://twitter.com/alex_kirshner/status/1835037647888146835

Memphis jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in the second quarter after Uiagalelei's interception resulted in a 65-yard touchdown drive. Florida State wasn't able to find the end zone until the middle of the third quarter, scoring on a six-yard run by Roydell Williams.

The Seminoles still had an opportunity to send the game to overtime, trailing by eight points with just 46 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Uiagalelei led Florida State down to Memphis' 39-yard line, but a pass to the end zone fell incomplete with no time left on the clock.

Fans were far from impressed with the Seminoles as well as head coach Mike Norvell, who left Memphis to join the school in 2019.

After finishing with a 13-1 record in 2023, the Seminoles became the first team to clinch the under on their projected win total in 2024 (h/t Brett McMurphy of Action Network).

Florida State will once again try to earn its first win of the season against Cal on Sept. 21.

FSU Fan Wears 'We Are Cooked' Sign in Viral Photo at Memphis Game amid 0-2 Start

A Florida State fan turned heads on Saturday during a college football game between FSU and Memphis at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida.

After the 0-2 Seminoles went down 3-0 in the game, cameras focused on a fan who was wearing a sign around their neck that read, "We are cooked."

Florida State entered the 2024 campaign as the No. 10 team in the nation with hopes of an ACC title and College Football Playoff berth, but the program's season is already on the brink after back-to-back upset losses to Georgia Tech and Boston College to open the year.

The start of Saturday's game was a microcosm of the Noles' early-season struggles, as running back Roydell Williams lost a fumble on only the second play from scrimmage.

Memphis took advantage with a field goal on its first offensive drive, putting Florida State in a position that has become all too familiar this season.

Things didn't get much better for the Seminoles as the first half progressed either with the team turning the ball over on downs on its second possession and quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei throwing an interception on the fourth drive.

Uiagalelei's arrival via the transfer portal was one of the big reasons why FSU was widely expected to be a contender this season.

After beginning his collegiate career at Clemson, Uiagalelei transferred to Oregon State for the 2023 season and performed well, throwing for 2,638 yards, 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions, while also rushing for six scores.

There was hope that Uiagalelei would take his game to the next level with more talent around him at FSU, but that didn't appear to be the case over the first two games, as he went a combined 40-of-69 for 465 yards with one touchdown and one pick.

After finishing with a losing record in each of his first two seasons as head coach at Florida State, Mike Norvell started turning things around in 2022, as the Seminoles secured their first 10-win season since 2016.

Florida State then started last season 13-0 and won the ACC title, but the Noles were somewhat shockingly left out of the College Football Playoff due to starting quarterback Jordan Travis going down with an injury.

After that disappointment and a 63-3 shellacking at the hands of Georgia in the Orange Bowl, Florida State went into the 2024 campaign with a chance at redemption.

Instead, FSU has been one of the most unpleasant surprises of the 2024 season thus far, and it is fair to wonder if Norvell may soon be on the hot seat.

Report: FSU CFB Team Has $12M NIL Budget Amid 0-2 Start to 2024 Season

No team is getting a lower ROI in college football right now than Florida State.

The Athletic's Bruce Feldman reported Wednesday the Seminoles have a team NIL budget totaling $12 million. That investment so far has netted a 24-21 loss to Georgia Tech and a 28-13 defeat to Boston College.

The reigning ACC champions were 10th in the Associated Press preseason Top 25 poll and fell out of the ranking entirely for Week 2.

Last year's Orange Bowl offered head coach Mike Norvell a taste of the work ahead in the offseason. FSU was hammered 63-3 by Georgia after a number of key players either opted out or entered the transfer portal.

Norvell, who had a lot of success out of the portal in 2023, was aggressive in augmenting his roster and signed 17 new transfers.

For the most part, however, those new additions haven't worked out, and none has been a bigger disappointment than quarterback DJ Uiagalelei.

The third time hasn't been the charm for Uiagalelei, who was the No. 1 pro-style QB recruit in 2020 but failed to fulfill his potential at Clemson and then Oregon State. He has thrown for 465 yards, one touchdown and one interception while averaging 6.7 yards per attempt.

Given the arc of his college career, Uiagalelei's performance isn't totally surprising. Much more unexpected is the fact Florida State's allowing 226.5 yards per game on the ground and 5.1 yards per carry.

Marvin Jones Jr., Sione Lolohea, Tomiwa Durojaiye and Cam Riley transferred in to help a front seven that returned Patrick Payton, Joshua Farmer and DJ Lundy. Defense was supposed to be a strength for FSU despite losing Jared Verse, Braden Fiske and Renardo Green, all of whom were selected in the first two rounds off the 2024 NFL draft.

Instead, the Seminoles mounted little resistance against Georgia Tech or Boston College, neither of whom is projected to have an electrifying offense in 2024.

The fact the 12-team playoff allows for teams to have a larger margin for error might offer little solace to Florida State since it's already 0-2 in ACC play. The program's hopes of reaching the conference championship look dim.

Assuming he's unable to turn things around, Norvell will hope coming in well below expectations won't lead to major boosters and other donors think twice about contributing to FSU's NIL pool for next season and beyond.

FSU's Mike Norvell 'Sick' About 0-2 Start, Calls BC Loss 'Extremely Disappointing'

It would have been difficult to script a worse start to the season than the one Florida State has experienced, and head coach Mike Norvell isn't happy about it.

"I'm sick to how the season started," head coach Mike Norvell told reporters following Monday's 28-13 home loss to Boston College. "… I apologize to the fans, I apologize to everybody associated with the program. That was extremely disappointing.

"All phases, we just weren't good."

Monday figured to be a bounce-back game for the Seminoles after they started the season with a 24-21 loss to Georgia Tech in Ireland. After all, it marked a return home against a Boston College team that hasn't won more than seven games since the 2009 campaign.

The Eagles had other plans.

Boston College jumped out to a lead with a statement drive on its second possession that went for 71 yards across 14 plays and more than nine minutes of game action. Florida State had no answers up front as the visitors' offensive line created massive holes for the rushing attack.

That continued on their next drive, which put Florida State behind 14-0 and set the tone for the rest of the game.

While the Seminoles closed the gap to 21-13 in the third quarter, Boston College responded with another touchdown drive and made sure there was no doubt by the end.

"We need leaders to rise up," Norvell said. "We need to continue to push in all areas of what we're doing, and we need to do it together. There is going to be plenty of negativity around this program. I understand that. ... But as a football team, you have to stand together."

Florida State's defense allowed 263 rushing yards, 73 of which came from quarterback Thomas Castellanos. Castellanos ran for a touchdown and threw for two more while outplaying his counterpart, DJ Uiagalelei.

Uiagalelei went 21-of-42 for 272 yards, one touchdown and one interception in a performance that drew boos from some Florida State fans. There were even some "We want Brock" chants from the crowd that was looking for backup quarterback Brock Glenn.

Norvell was noncommittal when it came to a potential quarterback change after the game:

While the expansion of the College Football Playoff to 12 teams provides more room for error for top programs, overcoming two conference losses to start the season will be a daunting task for the Seminoles. They still face Clemson, Miami and Notre Dame and have looked nothing like a contender through two contests.

They at least have some time to figure things out before next taking the field for a Sept. 14 game against Memphis.

Florida State's early-season woes continued on Monday.

The No. 10 Seminoles faced another upset following their loss to Georgia Tech in their season-opener, this week losing to Boston College 28-13 at home.

After an undefeated regular season a year ago that saw Florida State fall just short of reaching the College Football Playoff, competing for a championship this season already seems like a lost cause.

Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, who transferred from Oregon State to Florida State this offseason, struggled once against. While he had 272 passing yards and a touchdown, he failed to capitalize several times in the red zone and threw an interception in the third quarter that led to Boston College taking a 21-6 lead. He was also inefficient in his passing, completing just 21 of his 42 attempts.

But it wasn't just Uiagalelei struggling against the Eagles, the defense was to blame too as it gave up 263 rushing yards.

After the Seminoles' nightmare start to the season persisted on Monday, fans blasted head coach Mike Norvell and Uiagalelei on social media.

https://twitter.com/kpondiscio/status/1830774450196816380

After missing out on the CFP last year, Florida State sued the ACC in hopes of getting out of the conference and into a more competitive one like the SEC or Big Ten. After losing to two ACC teams in their first two games, that decision has now backfired on the Seminoles.

Now 0-2, Florida State will spent its bye week searching for answers on how to turn a disastrous start to the season around. But things don't get much easier when the Seminoles return to action on Sept. 14, as they'll take on a strong Group of Five team, Memphis.

Based on their ranking coming into the year, the Seminoles should be undefeated and flying high. Instead, they have two losses and head into their bye week demoralized.

FSU HC Norvell Defends DJ Uiagalelei but Wants 'to Be More Explosive' After GT Loss

DJ Uiagalelei's Florida State tenure did not get off to the hottest start, but the transfer quarterback still has the confidence of head coach Mike Norvell.

In his press conference following the Seminoles' 24-21 loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday in Dublin, Ireland, Norvell acknowledged some solid plays Uiagalelei made during the game and said the redshirt senior showed the ability to deliver in crucial moments.

Norvell also noted that the Seminoles offense needs to be more "explosive" in order to find success in 2024.

"I thought DJ did some good things," Norvell told reporters. "I thought that was a really great job there in that fourth-quarter drive. Had some fourth-down calls, had some tougher situations, and I thought he delivered that moment. There's a couple of drives in the third quarter, there's some opportunities that we're going to be able to grow from, and at the end of the day we have to be more explosive."

Uiagalelei went 19-of-27 for 193 yards with zero TDs and no interceptions in the loss. This comes after a season in which he threw for 2,638 yards with 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions for Oregon State. While these numbers are reasonable, the hope was that the 23-year-old could help the Seminoles contend for a national championship.

This was Florida State's first regular-season loss since 2022. The Seminoles entered the contest ranked No. 10, but their playoff hopes have taken a hit before the traditional start of the college football season.

Still, not all hope is lost. The expanded playoff field for 2024 means that an ACC championship would guarantee inclusion in the CFP, so the Seminoles do have a "win-and-in" scenario that wasn't available in 2023. While the ACC has some other quality teams, Florida State's status as the defending conference champions makes it an intriguing option to take it home once again.

The Seminoles will look to get back on track on Sept. 2 when they host Boston College at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The 2024 College Football season has already seen its first major upset.

No. 10 Florida State fell to unranked Georgia Tech 24-21 after a last-second field goal from the Yellow Jackets cemented a win in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Ireland on Saturday.

Florida State finished undefeated in the regular season in 2023 and brought in veteran quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei from the transfer portal. So far, that experiment is not paying off.

Fans took to social media to roast the Seminoles and declare that their season is already over.

https://twitter.com/JasonKirk_fyi/status/1827422884975014366
https://twitter.com/StillsByShawn/status/1827415803181867055

Florida State entered the game with a chip on its shoulder after the controversial end to the 2023 season. However, the Seminoles did themselves no favors by losing this game.

Yellow Jackets quarterback was named the Player of the Game for his efforts. He went 11-of-15 for 146 yards in the air and also added 15 carries for 54 yards on the ground.

The Yellow Jackets earned 190 rushing yards and look like a team on the rise. Florida State's loss is a set back, but it's not as drastic as it would have been a year ago.

The 2024 season will feature 12 teams making the playoff, with five automatic qualifiers for conference champions. While Florida State starts the season with a conference loss, there is a path that still exists for the team.

The Seminoles now just have less room for error.

Report: FSU's Hykeem Williams out vs. Georgia Tech with 'Minor' Injury

Florida State will open the 2024 regular season without sophomore wide receiver Hykeem Williams.

Per ESPN's Pete Thamel, Williams won't play on Saturday against Georgia Tech due to a "minor" injury, but he is expected back "soon."

The nature of Williams' injury is unclear, nor has there been any indication at this point how it occurred.

Williams had the potential to move into a starting role this season after playing sparingly as a freshman. He was listed as a backup to Malik Benson in the No. 1 receiver spot on the Seminoles' depth chart released on Aug. 18. Kentron Poitier is listed as the other backup behind Benson.

Florida State is replacing its three leading receivers from 2023. Keon Coleman, Johnny Wilson and Jaheim Bell are all in the NFL. They combined for 130 catches, 1,778 yards and 15 touchdowns last season.

The other pass-catchers on the team combined for 10 touchdown receptions. Tight end Kyle Morlock is the top returning receiver with 255 yards on 19 catches.

Benson figures to provide a boost after transferring from Alabama. The 21-year-old was a 4-star prospect and No. 78 overall player in the transfer portal by 247Sports after catching 13 passes for 162 yards and one touchdown in 14 games for the Crimson Tide.

Williams was a 5-star prospect and No. 31 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class, per 247Sports' composite rankings. He appeared in eight games as a freshman, catching five passes for 80 yards.

Florida State is ranked No. 10 in the Associated Press Preseason Top 25 poll. This marks the second consecutive year the program has started the season in the top 10.

The Seminoles missed the College Football Playoff last season despite starting 13-0 and winning the ACC Championship. They lost to Georgia, 63-3, in the Orange Bowl.

FSU, ACC Tell Court They Didn't Resolve Dispute over Potential Exit After Mediation

(Photo by Jeffrey Vest/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

Florida State and the ACC still haven't resolved anything regarding the school's potential exit from the conference.

Pete Nakos of On3 reported Thursday the two sides met for mediation on Aug. 13 but were unable to come to terms on a settlement. As a result, they filed a joint notice of mediation compliance in Leon County Court that said they will "continue discussions."

Nakos explained that Florida State wants to leave the ACC without paying the cost of buying out the remaining media rights or paying an exit fee. That is a significant ask, as attorneys estimated those costs could come in around $500 million.

Florida State isn't alone in its interest in leaving the conference, as Nakos noted this is just one of four ongoing lawsuits involving the ACC.

Those lawsuits are the ACC vs. Clemson, the ACC vs. Florida State, Clemson vs. the ACC and Florida State vs. the ACC.

"Listen, it's disappointing we're in this place," ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said on SportsCenter on Tuesday (h/t Nakos).

"It's a harmful situation. But we're going to do just that. We're going to fight. And that's the way it should be. When you sign an agreement twice—willingly sign—that you are part of a group that comes together and decides this is what you want to do for the next 20 years, you should be held accountable for that. That being said, we will compartmentalize that piece of it and we will go into the football season."

There will be some compartmentalizing occurring on the other side as well considering Florida State is set to begin its season on Saturday against Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland. The Seminoles have realistic College Football Playoff aspirations this season and will want to start off strong.

Florida State is looking to leave the conference at a time of unprecedented realignment.

Texas and Oklahoma joined the SEC, while Oregon, USC, Washington and UCLA joined the Big Ten this offseason. What's more, Stanford, Cal and SMU moved to the ACC, while Arizona, Utah, Colorado and Arizona State are joining the Big 12.

The Pac-12 is down to just Oregon State and Washington State with a perilous future.

That a powerhouse program like Florida State wants to leave when all signs are pointing toward the SEC and Big Ten separating themselves as the two premier conferences comes as no surprise. The undefeated Seminoles were left out of last year's CFP and watched one-loss Texas and Alabama teams make the field instead.

Financial implications are also surely playing a role, as the Big Ten and SEC generate more money than the other conferences in a time when name, image and likeness deals are quite important.

For now, Florida State is still a member of the ACC. But it will continue to discuss a potential exit with the season approaching.
