Mike Norvell: FSU OC, DC Roles Eyed by NFL Coaches and Getting 'Tremendous Interest'

Florida State's vacancies on the staff under head coach Mike Norvell are drawing interest despite the Seminoles' 1-9 record in 2024.

Norvell revealed he's had "tremendous interest" in open roles from interested coaches including some who are in the NFL, according to 247Sports' Brendan Sonnone.

Following a blowout 52-3 loss to Notre Dame on Saturday, offensive coordinator Alex Atkins and defensive coordinator Adam Fuller were fired. Wide receivers coach Ron Dugans was also let go.

Norvell's team is currently in the midst of a six-game losing streak and has been outscored 123-28 over the past three weeks.

It's a surprisingly poor turnaround for the Seminoles, as they finished with a 13-1 record in 2023 that included a victory in the ACC Championship Game. While several key contributors departed over the offseason, including quarterback Jordan Travis, Florida State wasn't expected to struggle as much as it has.

In fact, the Seminoles ranked No. 10 in the first Associated Press Top 25 poll of the season.

Florida State has failed to meet expectations on both sides of the ball, owning the worst scoring offense in the ACC while also finishing with the fourth-worst scoring defense in the conference through 10 games.

Transfer quarterback DJ Uiagalelei opened the year as the Seminoles' starter, completing 53.8 percent of his passes for 1,065 yards and four touchdowns compared to six interceptions in five games. He suffered a broken finger against SMU on Sept. 28 and hasn't played since.

Brock Glenn and Luke Kromenhoek have replaced Uiagalelei under center, but they've completed just 43.2 percent and 44.4 percent of their pass attempts respectively. They have also combined to throw four touchdowns as well as seven interceptions.

Despite the Seminoles' disheartening season, Norvell shouldn't have trouble finding new offensive and defensive coordinators.

The Florida State Seminoles, one season removed from going 13-1, are just 1-9 to start the 2024 campaign and were absolutely annihilated by Notre Dame on Saturday 52-3.

That prompted changes in the coaching staff, with Mike Norvell announcing Sunday that offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Alex Atkins, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller and wide receivers coach Ron Dugans have all been fired:

Florida State will finish the season with matchups against Charleston Southern and Florida, putting their best-case scenario at three wins. Even if they win out, it would be the program's worst season since going 3-8 in 1975.

The question, of course, will be what the fallout is for Norvell after the season. He's now just 32-26 with the Seminoles in five seasons with just two winning campaigns, one ACC title and a 1-1 record in bowl games.

There is also the question of how the uncertainty now surrounding the program will impact recruiting:

So, how did Florida State get here?

The defense has been horrid, giving up 29.8 points per game (101st in the country). The offense has been just as poor, as highly-touted transfer quarterback DJ Uiagalelei (1,065 yards, four touchdowns, six interceptions, 53.8 completion percentage) struggled early in the season before breaking his finger.

Meanwhile, Brock Glenn and Luke Kromenhoek have combined to throw for only four touchdowns and seven interceptions in relief duty.

And in general, the Seminoles haven't replaced the talent that departed in the offseason, as in-house replacements haven't matched the quality of play offered by their predecessors.

"I am shocked in where we are. It was not expected," Norvell told reporters last week. "You look at some of the results that we've faced, you look at some of the circumstances that have shown up. You go into a season and you have a picture in your mind of what things are going to look like. I'm not blind to it. I'm optimistic but I also know challenges."

Changes have already been made in Tallahassee. It wouldn't be a shock if more followed once the season ended.

Mike Norvell, FSU Criticized by CFB Fans for Blowout Loss to Notre Dame, 1-9 Record

A bad season has gotten even worse for Mike Norvell and the Florida State Seminoles.

The team fell to 1-9 on the season after a 52-3 dismantling at the hands of No. 10 Notre Dame on Saturday.

While the Fighting Irish could be a playoff-bound team, the result still shows how far away the Seminoles are from the elite of the college football landscape.

Fans took to social media to blast head coach Mike Norvell after the team's complete collapse from a 13-1 season in 2023 to the current 1-9 record in 2024.

https://twitter.com/zmizell_10/status/1855459898978365710

The product on the field from the Seminoles was a complete disaster. The offense managed just 208 total yards, committed six penalties and turned the ball over twice. The Seminoles possessed the ball for 33:11 in the game yet only came away with three points.

Brock Glenn went 5-of-18 for 51 yards and two interceptions while Lawrance Toafili was the leading rusher with 77 yards on 16 carries.

The Fighting Irish torched the Seminoles for 453 total yards and quarterback Riley Leonard had 215 passing yards, 70 rushing yards and three total touchdowns.

With bowl contention long gone for the Seminoles, the only goal will be to finish the season strong. Florida State had not lost nine games in a season since 1974 prior to this year, but the lone victory does at least mean the team won't join a winless 1973 squad with the lowest win total ever.

Following a 35-11 blowout loss against the North Carolina Tar Heels, the Florida State Seminoles and head coach Mike Norvell are facing significant backlash as they fell to 1-8 on the season.

Florida State finished the year 1-7 in ACC play, which represents the worst conference record in program history.

Just one year after finishing 13-1 and ending the season ranked No. 6, Norvell and his team have managed to win just one game so far this season.

After taking the lead on a field goal in the first quarter, the Seminoles allowed the Tar Heels to score 21 straight points, failing to find the end zone until the 6:24 mark in the third quarter.

Quarterback Brock Glenn completed 6-of-11 passes for 123 yards and one touchdown before freshman Luke Kromenhoek stepped in, completing 2-of-7 passes for 36 yards and two interceptions.

Tar Heels quarterback Jacolby Criswell completed 13-of-17 passes for 211 yards and one touchdown.

In his fifth year with FSU, Norvell had the Seminoles ranked No. 10 entering the season but got off to an 0-3 start, securing their only win against the California Golden Bears in Week 4.

FSU fans took to social media to voice their frustrations over the program's lack of offensive success compared to just a year ago.

The Seminoles will face Notre Dame on the road next Sunday as they continue to search for their second win of the season.

FSU Offense Trolled By CFB Fans After Turnovers on 3 Consecutive Plays vs. Duke

Florida State's offensive struggles were on full display during a matchup with Duke on Friday night.

The Seminoles became the first FBS team to turn the ball over on three consecutive plays this season. In the first half, quarterback Brock Glenn threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown by Blue Devils cornerback Chandler Rivers.

Glenn fumbled the ball after attempting to scramble on the opening play of the next drive. He was then picked off for a second time by linebacker Ozzie Nicholas.

Fans called out the dismal offensive performance.

It's been a rough season for head coach Mike Norvell's team, heading into Friday's contest with a 1-5 record.

The Seminoles initially entered the year with College Football Playoff aspirations, sitting at No. 10 in the first AP Top 25 poll.

Florida State's CFP hopes quickly faded, starting the season with a three-game losing streak. After scoring 21 points in an Aug. 24 loss to Georgia Tech, the Seminoles were held under 20 points in each of their next five appearances.

Norvell's squad is averaging just 14.8 points and recording 273.5 total yards per game this season, with both representing the lowest marks among all ACC teams. While Florida State dealt with several key departures over the offseason that included quarterback Jordan Travis, the team's offensive futility is still surprising after winning 13 games last season.

DJ Uiagalelei started under center for Florida State to begin the year, completing just 53.8 percent of his passes and throwing six interceptions in five games before he suffered a hand injury that ultimately required surgery.

Glenn started against No. 10 Clemson on Oct. 5, finishing 23-of-41 for 228 yards and two touchdowns compared to an interception.

As the Seminoles attempt to earn their second win of the season, turnovers prevented them from making an impact in the first half on Friday.

The Clemson Tigers grabbed a 29-13 win over Florida State on Saturday with Seminoles quarterback DJ Uiagalelei sidelined with a hand injury.

Uiagalelei was ruled out after it was reported that he underwent hand surgery and would likely miss the remainder of the season, according to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz.

In his absence, freshman quarterback Brock Glenn earned his first start for the program on Saturday, finishing 23 of 41 for 228 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The Tigers improved to 4-1 while the Seminoles dropped to 1-5 on the season, leaving FSU fans frustrated with the program.

Fifth-year head coach Mike Norvell is in the spotlight after FSU's lackluster performance on Saturday, with many fans calling for his dismissal.

Since joining the Seminoles in 2020, Norvell has compiled a 32-21 record, winning the 2023 ACC Coach of the Year and the 2023 Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year.

Over the past two seasons, the Seminoles have achieved a season-high AP poll ranking of No. 11 in 2022 and No. 3 in 2023. This year, they entered the preseason AP poll at No. 10. However, with only one win so far, fans are calling for a change—and they want it now.

FSU has much to adjust and consider as it heads into its Week 6 bye.

Report: FSU's DJ Uiagalelei Could Miss Rest of Season After Surgery on Hand Injury

Florida State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei could potentially miss the remainder of the 2024 season after undergoing surgery on his throwing hand, according to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz (h/t Pete Nakos of On3.com).

Uiagalelei suffered the hand injury in the fourth quarter of the Seminoles' 42-16 loss to SMU on Sept. 28, causing him to leave the game.

He'll be replaced by backup Brock Glenn under center during Florida State's clash with No. 15 Clemson on Saturday.

Glenn briefly replaced Uiagalelei for two drives against SMU, failing to complete all four of his pass attempts.

Even before the injury to the team's starting signal-caller, it's been a disastrous year for the Seminoles. After opening the season at No. 10 in the Week 1 Associated Press Top 25 poll, Florida State lost each of its first three contests.

Head coach Mike Norvell's team was able to defeat Cal in Week 4, but the success was short-lived as the blowout loss to the Mustangs occurred the following week. The Seminoles currently sit at 1-4.

Uiagalelei has been partially responsible for the team's slow start, as he's struggled with turnovers. After tossing seven interceptions in 12 games during his 2023 campaign at Oregon State, he had already been picked off six times in five games to start the 2024 season.

He also completed 53.8 percent of his throws for 1,065 yards and four touchdowns.

Due to the injury, Uiagalelei could attempt to secure a medical redshirt and return to college football in 2025 for his sixth season (via Nakos). That would require him to sit out for the rest of the year.

In the meantime, Glenn will attempt to help the Seminoles secure an upset victory on Saturday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET.

FSU's DJ Uiagalelei Out vs. Clemson Due to Finger Injury, Mike Norvell Says

Florida State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei will miss his team's home game against No. 15 Clemson on Saturday with a broken finger on his throwing hand.

"He's going to be out for this Saturday," FSU head coach Mike Norvell told reporters Tuesday, per Liam Rooney of the Tallahassee Democrat.

"We've still got some further testing to see what the longevity of that is going to keep him out, but that will most likely be the next couple of weeks."

Uiagalelei suffered the injury during FSU's 42-16 loss to SMU. Brock Glenn took over for Uiagalelei and is expected to get the start against Clemson, per Rooney.

The Seminoles began the year as the No. 10 team in the Associated Press poll, but it's been a disastrous year for the 1-4 program. FSU has scored just 66 points (13.2 PPG), and none of its losses have come against ranked teams.

Uiagalelei has not fared well, completing just 53.8 percent of his passes for 1,065 yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions. He's in his fifth collegiate season, having played three years for Clemson before suiting up for Oregon State in 2023.

Now the Seminoles turn to Glenn, who saw some action last year, most notably in relief of starter Jordan Travis after he suffered a season-ending leg injury.

Glenn completed 19-of-51 passes for 229 yards and two interceptions. In relief of Uiagalelei last Saturday, Glenn went 0-for-4 passing.

The upcoming road will not be easy for FSU. After the Clemson game, FSU has a bye before going on the road against undefeated Duke and No. 8 Miami.

After three straight losses to start the season, Florida State finally has its first win.

The Seminoles beat undefeated California 14-9 to snap the ugly losing streak as they try to make the most of a season that already feels like a disaster.

Even in the win, the Seminoles' issues that led to an 0-3 start were still evident.

Florida State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has struggled early on this season, and things didn't change much on Saturday. He finished with 177 passing yards, a touchdown and an interception, completing 16 of his 27 passes.

For a quarterback playing his fifth collegiate season, Uiagalelei still can't seem to find his rhythm and guide his offense down the field consistently.

In total, the Seminoles' offense mustered just 284 total yards.

With its offense lacking, Florida State's defense was solid, especially on Cal's final drive of the game as it kept the Golden Bears out of the end zone after making it into the red zone.

While the Seminoles managed to pick up a win, fans trolled Florida State for that win coming so late in the season.

Florida State's College Football Playoff hopes are long gone after starting the season 0-3, but the Seminoles can still put together a solid season if they capitalize off of the momentum from Saturday's win.

The biggest point of emphasis moving forward will be the offense. The Seminoles' defense has proved to be at least somewhat capable of competing with other ACC teams, but Uiagalelei and the offense are far from doing so.

Florida State will face another new member of the ACC next week as it takes on SMU, which won't be an easy opponent after the Mustangs downed TCU on Saturday to improve to 3-1.

FSU's Norvell 'Pleased' with DJ Uiagalelei: 'He's Giving Us a Chance' Amid 0-3 Start

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell maintained a positive tone when talking about starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei amid the team's 0-3 start to the 2024 season.

"I am pleased with the way that he's preparing. I am pleased with the things that he's doing," he told reporters Monday. "You see the moments where he's giving us a chance. He's giving us an opportunity to have big plays. I thought there were a lot of the reads and things that he needed to do and the position where he needed to put the ball that was positive."

Norvell also conceded that it has "been a challenging start for everybody" and that "we all have a responsibility."

Some regression was expected from FSU after it lost so many key players from the team that went 13-0 during the 2023 regular season. The shellacking it suffered at the hands of Georgia in the Orange Bowl pointed to the work Norvell and his staff needed to do in the transfer portal.

Uiagalalei, who came in from Oregon State, encapsulates how badly the Seminoles misfired in terms of recruitment.

The fifth-year senior has thrown for 666 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while completing 56.6 percent of his passes. By any objective metric, he has not performed well and FSU hasn't even entered the toughest stretch of its ACC schedule yet.

Rather than helping him, Uiagalelei's wealth of experience as a college starter is working to his detriment as well. The book is out on the 23-year-old and he has shown little reason to think he'll evolve as a passer at this point.

https://twitter.com/alex_kirshner/status/1835037647888146835

Fans would probably like to see a change at quarterback, but there may not be a viable alternative.

Redshirt freshman Brock Glenn is the backup and he looked way out of his depth toward the end of last year after Jordan Travis' injury. Behind him is true freshman Luke Kromenhoek, the No. 5 quarterback prospect in 247Sports' composite rankings for the 2024 recruiting class. Even if Norvell believes in Kromenhoek's long-term potential, throwing a first-year starter out there when the team is a sinking ship can backfire.

For better or worse, Norvell pretty much hitched his wagons to Uiagalalei so he has to make the best of it.
