Knicks' Tom Thibodeau Says Jalen Brunson Is 'At His Best When His Best Is Needed'

Julia Stumbaugh
May 1, 2025

Tom Thibodeau praised NBA Clutch Player of the Year Jalen Brunson after his late three-pointer sealed the New York Knicks' series-clinching win over the Detroit Pistons on Thursday night.

"Jalen's shot, what can you say?" Thibodeau said after the Knicks' 116-113 Game 6 victory. "Timely. He's at his best when his best is needed. He's done it all year. That's what makes him special."

The game was tied 113-113 when Brunson hit his game-winning shot with less than 10 seconds left on the clock.

Brunson finished the game with 40 points on 15-for-33 shooting from the field.

He was defended throughout the game by Ausar Thompson, who succeeding in limiting Brunson to 16 points on 4-for-16 shooting from the field in Game 5.

The Pistons went on a late run and led by seven points with 2:35 remaining on the clock. But Brunson helped the Knicks close out the game with an 11-1 run, then crossed Thompson on the game-winning shot.

Coming up big in the clutch is nothing new for Brunson, who beat out the Denver Nuggets' Nikola Jokić for the Clutch Player award after averaging 5.6 points per clutch situation— defined by the NBA as the final five minutes of five-point games— during the regular season.

Brunson also ranked second with 156 points and third with 28 assists in clutch situations. The Knicks went 17-11 in clutch games when Brunson was playing, according to the NBA.

"I think some people are born into it. I think I had to learn," Brunson said about being clutch when discussing the award last week on TNT's Inside the NBA. "I learned back in high school, I got better and better at each stage, and here we are."

Brunson and the Knicks will now move on to face the defending champion Boston Celtics, who advanced from the first round on Tuesday with a Game 5 blowout of the Orlando Magic. The Knicks are looking to make it to the conference finals for the first time in 25 years.

Jalen Brunson Overwhelms NBA Fans as Game-winner Helps Knicks Eliminate Cade, Pistons

New York Knicks v Detroit Pistons - Game Six

There hasn't been a better series in the first round of the NBA playoffs than the New York Knicks facing the Detroit Pistons. It was only fitting that another epic finish closed it out.

Thanks to an 11-1 run to close the game and Jalen Brunson's game-winning three, the Knicks beat the Pistons in Game 6 on Thursday night, 116-113, and are off to the second round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs to face the Boston Celtics.

Brunson hit the Pistons with a Mortal Kombat-esque fatality in Game 6, putting up 40 points and seven assists, while Mikal Bridges (25 points) and OG Anunoby (22 points) were solid as well. Karl-Anthony Towns managed just 10 points, albeit adding 15 rebounds, before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.

Cade Cunningham yet again led Detroit with 23 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and three steals, while Jalen Duren added 21 points and six boards and Malik Beasley chipped in with 20 points off the bench (though he cost the Pistons a shot at a game-tying three at the buzzer, as a Cunningham pass glanced off his fingers).

The fact that this series was this tight was an enormous credit to the Pistons, who didn't even have Jaden Ivey for these playoffs. But Brunson came up with clutch moment after clutch moment throughout, and social media showed him the love:

Ad Placeholder

The Knicks are advancing, but in many ways this series has felt like a cautionary tale for New York and something of a coronation for the Pistons. The Knicks were expected to come out on top but certainly didn't look like a team that would give the heavy-hitters in the East like the Celtics or Cleveland Cavaliers too much trouble, which is concerning for a team built to win right now.

The Pistons, on the other hand, are young and built for the future. Cunningham is only 23. Ausar Thompson is just 22. Duren is 21. Ivey, when he returns healthy, is only 23. Don't forget about rookie Ron Holland II, only 19.

The Pistons are only going to improve, and they gave the Knicks absolutely everything they could handle. In the end, they didn't have quite enough answers for Brunson, but they'll look on this series as a building block.

And the Knicks will hope the team can add more consistency in Round 2. If not, the Celtics won't let them stick around for long.

Brunson finished with 40 points and seven assists on 15-of-33 shooting, connecting on three of his 10 attempts from behind the arc.

The Knicks held an 11-point lead entering the fourth quarter but the Pistons stormed back to gain a seven-point advantage with just under three minutes left in regulation.

Brunson, who won Clutch Player of the Year honors for his 2024-25 campaign, scored eight of New York's final 11 points to close out the game and secure a win.

Cade Cunningham finished with 23 points, seven rebounds and eight assists for the Pistons. He shot 9-of-22 from the field but missed all eight of his attempts from three-point territory.

Detroit's season came to an end, although it was still an impressive overall performance from a team that won just 14 games in 2024.

The Knicks will now advance to face the Boston Celtics.

Los Angeles Clippers 111, Denver Nuggets 105

The Clippers initially appeared to be cruising towards a win, opening up a 15-point lead over the Nuggets with just under six minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Denver immediately proceeded to go on an 11-2 run to pull to within six points as two minutes were still on the clock, but a three from Norman Powell gave Los Angeles some separation.

The Nuggets eventually got the ball back while facing a five-point deficit with roughly 30 seconds left in regulation, but Nikola Jokić couldn't convert a layup and pull to within one score.

Jokić finished with 25 points, eight assists and seven rebounds on 11-of-22 shooting.

Denver struggled to take care of the ball, committing 14 turnovers compared to just seven for Los Angeles.

The Clippers' trio of Kawhi Leonard, James Harden and Powell all stepped up on Thursday.

Leonard finished with a double-double, scoring 27 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Harden racked up 28 points of his own to go along with eight assists, while Powell chipped in with 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting.

Game 7 will be on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Nikola Jokic Reportedly 'Finally Comfortable' as Nuggets' Leader After HC Firing

NBA Playoffs 2025 - Los Angeles Clippers v Denver Nuggets

ESPN's Shams Charania believes Nikola Jokić has become more "comfortable" with his leadership role on the Denver Nuggets since the front office turnover at the end of the 2024-25 regular season.

The Nuggets, who lead the Los Angeles Clippers 3-2 in the first round of the 2025 NBA playoffs, parted ways with head coach Michael Malone and general manager Calvin Booth in April.

"Even before then, he was a little bit vocal, but he's been unleashed," Charania said in Thursday appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. "When I talk to people on Denver, they say Nikola Jokić is finally comfortable with the power, with the influence, with who he is as a player."

Ad Placeholder

Jokić and the Nuggets could advance to the second round with a Game 6 win on Thursday night in Los Angeles.

"Before, I think, we hadn't seen him as maybe demonstrative, or as vocal," Charania said. "But right now, he's showing it. And I don't it's the power that he feels he can yield. It's not like, 'Oh, I'm going to fire this coach, I'm going to trade this player.' It's like, 'How can I influence my teammates?'

Ad Placeholder

"This is the first time, I think, we've seen in Nikola Jokić's career, where he is going about every night, and he's trying to influence how his teammates are behaving, how they're playing."

ESPN's Tim MacMahon and Ramona Shelburne previously reported shortly after Malone's dismissal that interim head coach David Adelman was encouraging players "to speak up in huddles and on the court," and that Jokić had been "engaged and drawing up plays" in huddles early in Adelman's tenure.

Ad Placeholder

One of the younger Nuggets players on whom Jokić has had the most visible influence is arguably Christian Braun, who has benefitted from playing alongside Jokić during his breakout 15.4 point-per-game campaign in 2024-25.

Braun has credited Jokić with helping him improve on both offense and defense during his third NBA season.

Ad Placeholder

“It’s all credit to Nikola,” Braun told The Athletic's Fred Katz in April. “He’ll grab you during the game, and he’ll tell you, ‘I want you here because they’re gonna do this.’ He’ll know three steps ahead. The credit doesn’t go to me.”

Also in April, Braun told The Ringer's Michael Pina: “Sometimes he’ll put you in your spot. He’ll grab your body, move you into your spot. He’s moved me a couple times.”

That influence, as well as Jokić becoming the third player in NBA history to average a season-long triple-double, has helped the Nuggets come within one win of a spot in the second round.

The Nuggets and Clippers tip off Thursday night at 10 p.m. ET.

Lakers' Bronny James Says He's Been Trying to Prove 'I Belong' in NBA amid Criticism

2025 NBA Playoffs - Minnesota Timberwolves v Los Angeles Lakers - Game One

Bronny James says that his goal has been to prove that he belongs in the NBA regardless of his connection with his father, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James.

"That I belong. That's all I've been trying to prove," James told Fox Sports' Melissa Rohlin.

The Lakers' 2024-25 season ended on Wednesday night with a 103-96 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 5 of the first round.

James made his NBA playoff debut in Game 1 and saw minimal playing time in Game 3, both losses. He didn't see the court in either of the final two games of the Lakers' series.

Ad Placeholder

The No. 55 pick of the 2024 draft finished his first NBA season having appeared in 27 regular-season games and making one start.

He averaged 2.3 points, 0.7 rebounds and 0.8 assists in 6.7 minutes per game, shooting 31.3 percent from the field and 28.1 percent from deep but looking more confident as the season wore on.

James saw significantly more playing time in his 11 G League appearances, where he averaged 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.4 assists while shooting 44.0 percent from the field and 38.0 percent from three-point range.

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka told reporters after the Lakers' season-ending loss on Wednesday the franchise would do "whatever we can" to meet LeBron James' roster expectations as the superstar eyes his $52.6 million player option for next season.

If those expectations include playing time for Bronny, the 20-year-old may get even more chances to prove his NBA readiness during his second season in the league.

Lakers' Bronny James Says Playing With LeBron Was 'Amazing,' Wants to Stay Teammates

Los Angeles Lakers v Philadelphia 76ers

Bronny James reflected on playing with his father, LeBron, on the Los Angeles Lakers throughout his rookie season in the NBA.

"It's a blessing," James told Fox Sports' Melissa Rohlin. "Being able to learn from him, not only as a player, but as a dad. It's a different type of relationship. I try to take full advantage of it because it's something that a lot of people can't have. It was an amazing experience for me. And I'm looking forward to learning more from him, if he's still here or not, either way. But I'm just looking forward to it."

The younger James also confirmed that he wants to keep the pairing together moving forward.

"Yeah, for sure," James said, per Rohlin. "However long he can come back for, it's always a pleasure being around him. He's locked in. The stuff he does for his body and the preparation and stuff like that, I want to take full advantage of it."

LeBron has a $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season.

He was noncommittal surrounding his NBA future after the Lakers were eliminated in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series with the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night, though.

"I don't know," LeBron said, per ESPN's Dave McMenamin. "I don't have an answer to that. Something I'll sit down with my family, my wife and my support group and kind of just talk through it and see what happens. And just have a conversation with myself on how long I want to continue to play."

As for Bronny, he signed a four-year contract worth $7.9 million with Los Angeles after the team selected him with the No. 55 overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft.

He appeared in 27 regular-season games as a rookie, primarily operating outside of head coach JJ Redick's rotation. Bronny and LeBron shared the floor for 10 total minutes across three games, via NBA.com.

Bronny averaged 2.3 points and 0.8 assists in 6.7 minutes per game, shooting 31.3 percent from the field.

The 20-year-old also appeared in 11 regular-season contests with the South Bay Lakers, Los Angeles' G League affiliate.

Bronny fared much better in extended minutes, recording 21.9 points, 5.4 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game on 44.0/38.0/81.5 shooting splits with South Bay.

As he begins preparing for his second season in the NBA, he's looking forward to possibly playing with his father once again.

LeBron James Asked Sons Bronny, Bryce Who Will Try to Break His NBA Scoring Record

Andrew Peters

2025 NBA Playoffs - Minnesota Timberwolves v Los Angeles Lakers

LeBron James has a big challenge for his two sons.

Per Melissa Rohlin of Fox Sports, after breaking the NBA's all-time scoring record in February 2023, he asked whether Bronny or Bryce would be the one to break it.

"Which one of y'all is gonna try to break my record?" James asked in the locker room after breaking the scoring record.

Asking anyone to break James' scoring record is a tall task, let alone two players who, at the time, weren't even in the league yet. Since proposing the challenge to his sons, Bronny, his eldest, overcame a health scare at USC and was ultimately drafted last summer.

Ad Placeholder

Bronny struggled to find his place early on in Summer League, but ended up making strides towards being an NBA regular. While he appeared in just 27 games for the Lakers and averaged just 6.7 minutes per contest, he had a solid season in the G League.

In 11 appearances for the South Bay Lakers, Bronny averaged 21.9 points, 5.4 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game.

Ad Placeholder

As for Bryce, he's still working his way toward joining his father and older brother in the league. He's currently in his senior year at Sierra Canyon but is committed to play for Arizona next season. Bryce is considered to be a 3-star prospect by 247Sports' Composite.

Even if Bronny has a breakout year next year and Bryce turns into a solid NBA player, it's hard to imagine either can best their father's scoring record. James is at 42,184 points and seemingly still has a few more years left in him.

While no record is unbreakable, James' will likely stand for a long time.

Lakers' Redick Wants to Unlock 'Best Version' of Luka Doncic After NBA Playoff Exit

Zach Bachar

Los Angeles Lakers v Brooklyn Nets

Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick is focused on maximizing the potential of superstar Luka Dončić following the team's playoff elimination on Wednesday night.

"Our first conversation was that he wants to be coached, he wants to be held accountable ... I want to bring out the best version of Luka," Redick said Thursday, per team reporter Mike Trudell. "That’s what he wants from me. That's the partnership going forward. That's the expectation, the baseline of what we're trying to do. Let’s try to bring out the best version of Luka and hopefully win a championship doing that.”

Ad Placeholder

Dončić ending the 2024-25 season as a member of the Lakers may have seemed unlikely when the year started, but Los Angeles ended up acquiring him in a shocking blockbuster trade involving the Dallas Mavericks on Feb. 2.

While the 26-year-old dealt with a calf strain in Dallas and underwent a change of scenery in the middle of the season, it's still worth noting that his production during his 2024-25 campaign represented a step down from his exceptional career as of late.

Ad Placeholder

Dončić averaged 28.2 points per game on the season, his lowest scoring average since the 2020-21 season. He also shot 45.0 percent from the field, his worst percentage since his rookie year in 2019.

The five-time All-Star also connected on a mere 43.8 percent of his field goals as a member of the Lakers following the trade. The team was eliminated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games during the first round of the 2025 playoffs.

Given the age of Dončić as well as his tumultuous season, it's fair to assume that he'll make improvements in certain areas of his game with a full offseason in Los Angeles under his belt.

Redick also confirmed that he'll be focused on helping Dončić continue to elevate his performance.

Tyrese Haliburton's Dad Won't Attend Pacers Games Indefinitely After Giannis Incident

2025 NBA Playoffs - Milwaukee Bucks v Indiana Pacers - Game Five

Don't expect to see Tyrese Haliburton's father, John, at Indiana Pacers playoff games in the near future following his confrontation with Giannis Antetokounmpo after Tuesday's contest.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Thursday that Indiana's front office decided John Haliburton should not attend the team's home or road games for an indefinite amount of time. Charania noted John Haliburton "was understanding and accepted the choice."

There has been plenty of contrition after the confrontation that overshadowed the thrilling end to Game 5 of Indiana's first-round series win over the Bucks.

Tyrese Haliburton went on The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday and said of his father (45-second mark): "His actions were out of line. I apologized to Giannis, he apologized to Giannis. … There's no excuse and no place for that. I think that he understands that. I think he just got caught up in the moment."

Ad Placeholder

John Haliburton also took to social media to publicly apologize to Antetokounmpo:

However, he also spoke to Dustin Dopirak of the Indianapolis Star and denied that he swore at the Bucks star and added he "was wrong for going on the basketball court because I shouldn't have ever done that."

As for Antetokounmpo, he addressed it during a lengthy postgame press conference in which he explained that people should be humble in victory. He also called John Haliburton's behavior "unacceptable."

Ad Placeholder

It was quite the ending to a series that saw Indiana eliminate Milwaukee in the first round for the second straight year.

Damian Lillard was sidelined with a torn Achilles, but it seemed like Antetokounmpo was going to do enough to preserve his team's season with a triple-double of 30 points, 20 rebounds and 13 assists. However, Haliburton continuously provided an answer when the Pacers' back was against the wall.

Ad Placeholder

He scored four points in the team's final two possessions of regulation and then converted an and-1 down the stretch of overtime. After a Gary Trent Jr. turnover, the two-time All-Star then made what proved to be the game-winning layup.

That set off the celebration that included his father confronting Antetokounmpo in a move that will prevent him from seeing the Pacers take on the Cleveland Cavaliers in person during the second round.

Brian Gregory Promoted to Suns GM amid Kevin Durant Trade Rumors

Scott Polacek
May 1, 2025
COLLEGE BASKETBALL: JAN 29 South Florida at Tulsa

The Phoenix Suns took an important step in what figures to be a busy offseason Thursday.

Phoenix announced it promoted vice president of player programming Brian Gregory to the general manager position as previous GM James Jones transitioned to a senior adviser role.

Gregory will be under the spotlight during the offseason as the team looks to hire a new head coach and perhaps even trade Kevin Durant.

That Phoenix went with Gregory isn't a particular surprise.

NBA insider Marc Stein reported Wednesday that promoting the vice president was "an emerging option" since "Gregory already has a significant voice in Suns draft strategy and is highly regarded by owner Mat Ishbia."

Ad Placeholder

Gregory was an assistant coach at Michigan State when Ishbia was a player and, as NBA insider Jake Fischer pointed out, is already quite familiar with college scouting ahead of the draft:

Phoenix hired Gregory ahead of the 2024-25 campaign after his lengthy career as a college basketball coach.

He was the head coach of Dayton for eight seasons from 2003-11, the head coach of Georgia Tech for five seasons from 2011-16 and the head coach of South Florida for six seasons from 2017-23.

In all, he went a combined 327-287 during his three stops.

Ad Placeholder

As for Jones, he was the GM since 2019 and helped build the roster that reached the 2021 NBA Finals. However, Phoenix was arguably the most disappointing team in the league this past season as it failed to even reach the Western Conference play-in tournament at 36-46 and has now fired its head coach in three consecutive campaigns.

One of Gregory's first tasks will be finding a replacement for the fired Mike Budenholzer, who lasted just one season after Frank Vogel lasted just one season as the replacement for the fired Monty Williams.

Ad Placeholder

Then there is the question of Durant, who will surely be in plenty of trade rumors during the offseason after the team failed to reach the playoffs this season.

The 36-year-old has just one more season remaining on his deal, and trading him could be the fastest way for the front office to facilitate a quick rebuild around Devin Booker.

It will be quite the monumental task for Gregory as he begins his first GM role in the NBA.
