Travis Kelce Rumors: Chiefs TE Hasn't Demanded Touches from HC Reid amid Slow Start

Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce hasn't approached his coaches about more looks in the passing game amid a lackluster start to the 2024 NFL season, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

"In the meantime, sources say Kelce has told the Chiefs coaches to keep it rolling with the players getting touches, rather than demanding the ball," Rapoport reported Sunday. "He's confident enough in the product he puts on the field and knows this is what the team needs. The team feeds off his energy."

Though three games, Kelce has eight receptions for 69 yards, numbers that put him on pace to have his worst season ever — excluding his rookie campaign when a knee injury limited him to one appearance.

Rapoport reported the nine-time Pro Bowler continues to get blanketed by opposing secondaries, which is contributed to his low output so far.

Kelce's performance showed some signs of decline last year compared to previous seasons. He finished with 93 receptions, 984 yards and five touchdowns in 16 games. This was the first time since 2015 he didn't hit the 1,000 yard mark, and his 10.6 yards per reception was nearly two full yards worse than his career average (12.5).

It turns out Kelce was saving a lot of his energy for the postseason. He had more than 70 yards in each of Kansas City's four playoff games, including 209 between the AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl. He only had one three-game streak with that many yards during the regular season.

After going seven straight games without a touchdown catch, Kelce had a total of three touchdowns between the AFC Divisional Round and AFC Championship Game.

Patrick Mahomes targeted Kelce 11 times against the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC title game. He caught all 11 passes for 116 yards and one touchdown.

The Chiefs took steps to improve their stable of pass-catchers around Mahomes to take some of the pressure off Kelce this season. They signed Marquise Brown and selected Xavier Worthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft.

Unfortunately for Kansas City, a collarbone injury has prevented Brown from suiting up to this point. Rashee Rice has instead emerged as Mahomes' favorite target so far. His 24 catches and 288 receiving yards are each three times higher than the next closest player.

The Chiefs are off to a 3-0 start despite neither Mahomes nor Kelce playing up to their usual level. Like last year, they might wind up rounding into form as the season unfolds and just in time for the playoffs.

NFL Rumors: Chiefs' Hollywood Brown Expected to Miss 2024 Regular Season amid Injury

An offseason addition to the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver room is reportedly expected to miss the entirety of the regular season.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Marquise "Hollywood" Brown, who was placed on injured reserve Friday due to a shoulder injury that requires surgery, is not expected to suit up for the Chiefs this year. He could be back on the field for the postseason but is not expected to return earlier than mid-January.

According to Schefter, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Brown is expected to miss "months" rather than "weeks" because of the injury.

Brown suffered the injury on the first play of the Chiefs' Aug. 10 preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

According to Schefter, Chiefs' vice president for sports medicine and performance Rick Burkholder said Brown was "doing great in rehab," but upon a final evaluation, a bone in Brown's shoulder had moved, leading to the decision to have surgery.

Brown agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $11 million with the Chiefs in March, becoming one of the biggest additions for Kansas City this offseason. He spent the past two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, recording 709 receiving yards and three touchdowns in 2022 and 574 receiving yards and four touchdowns in 2023.

The fifth-year player's best season came in 2021 with the Baltimore Ravens when he recorded 1,008 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

With Brown likely out for the year, the Chiefs will look to the rest of their receiving core to step up and aid star quarterback Patrick Mahomes as Kansas City looks to make history by winning a third consecutive Super Bowl.

Along with star tight end Travis Kelce, the Chiefs return their second-leading receiver from 2023 Rashee Rice, who had 103 receiving yards in Week 1. First-round pick Xavier Worthy also showed promise in his debut with 47 receiving yards, 21 rushing yards and two total touchdowns against the Ravens.

NFL Rumors: Chiefs' Hollywood Brown to Have Surgery on Shoulder Injury, Go on IR

It could be quite some time before star receiver Marquise "Hollywood" Brown makes his debut for the Kansas City Chiefs.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Brown is set to undergo surgery on Monday to repair the dislocated AC joint in his shoulder and will be placed on injured reserve. The Chiefs plan to "monitor his rehab progress throughout the season" before determining a timetable for his return.

Schultz noted that "multiple imaging studies" showed that Brown's shoulder injury "was not healing correctly." The 27-year-old would be risking a more serious injury that would have long-term effects if he chose not to undergo corrective surgery.

On Monday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters that Brown was "getting close" and "feeling better." Unfortunately, it appears that things took a turn during the week that led to Brown electing for Monday's procedure.

Brown dislocated his shoulder in Kansas City's preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 10 and hadn't practiced since. He was forced to sit out the team's season-opening 27-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens last Thursday.

The Chiefs signed Brown to a one-year deal in March with the expectation that he would fill the role of star quarterback Patrick Mahomes' top receiving option beside tight end Travis Kelce. The Oklahoma product began his career with the Ravens and spent the last two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, totaling 3,644 yards and 28 touchdowns in his five-year career.

Without Brown in the lineup, Mahomes leaned on second-year receiver Rashee Rice against the Ravens, and 2024 first-round pick Xavier Worthy was also given a chance to shine. Rice led the team with seven catches and 103 yards while Worthy recorded rushing and receiving touchdowns.

The Chiefs will continue to rely on their depth as they move forward without Brown, and they will look to improve to 2-0 when they meet the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

Patrick Mahomes' Supporting Cast Wows Fans in Chiefs Win as Kelce, Worthy, Rice Shine

Last season, Patrick Mahomes basically dragged the Kansas City Chiefs offense to another Super Bowl title, as his receiving corps—outside of superstar tight end Travis Kelce—didn't do him many favors.

The 2024 season started on a far different note.

Rookie Xavier Worthy notched two touchdowns, Rashee Rice had seven catches for 103 yards and the Kansas City supporting cast helped Mahomes and the Chiefs start the season with a 27-20 victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

It was a testament to Worthy (two catches for 47 yards and a score; one carry for 21 yards and a touchdown) and Rice that Kelce had a relatively quiet night (three catches for 34 yards) and the Chiefs were still humming on offense.

And that—combined with the fact that Marquise Brown wasn't even on the field due to an injury—had fans and pundits alike excited for the upside of this new-look offense. That, and perhaps frightened for the rest of the NFL:

Granted, the Chiefs needed every last inch of the end zone to secure the victory.

On the final game, Isaiah Likely appeared to have pulled down a touchdown reception that would have either forced overtime following the extra point or a two-point conversion for a potential Ravens win. Replays showed, however, that his foot just brushed against the end line, ruling it an incompletion:

And that, folks, is how you open an NFL season—with a heavy dose of intrigue and drama.

If this Kansas City supporting cast proves to be as dynamic as it showed on Thursday night, however, the 2024 season may soon feel like a foregone conclusion. If Mahomes can lead the team to a title with a group of receivers last season that dropped passes at alarming rates, what might he do with one that has this level of big-play ability?

Win a third title in a row, that's what. NFL defenses have been put on notice.

Chiefs' Hollywood Brown Out vs. Ravens with Shoulder Injury to Open 2024 NFL Season

The Kansas City Chiefs will be without Marquise "Hollywood" Brown to start the 2024 NFL season.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters on Friday that Brown will not be available for Kansas City's Week 1 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.

Brown signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs in March after spending the previous two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. Brown suffered a collarbone injury in preseason action on Aug. 11.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach compared Brown's injury to Tyreek Hill's injury in 2019 and said that Brown's injury "falls in line with the timeline that Tyreek went through." Hill missed four games with his injury.

The Chiefs did not place Brown on injured reserve, so the team seemingly hopes he could return within the first month of the season.

Brown had 51 catches for 574 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games for the Cardinals in 2023.

Brown has been more productive with a stable quarterback situation, with his 2021 season serving as a strong example. He had 91 catches for 1,008 yards and six touchdowns that season with Lamar Jackson as his quarterback.

Patrick Mahomes will be a major upgrade for Brown and a supporting cast of Travis Kelce, Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice should allow Brown to get some solid matchups and return to form. .

The Chiefs' Week 1 matchup against the Ravens is set for Sept. 5 at 8:20 p.m. ET.

Patrick Mahomes Hopes Chiefs Get Marquise Brown Back from Injury 'Sooner' Than Later

Patrick Mahomes is hoping that Marquise Brown has a swift recovery.

Brown went down during the Kansas City Chiefs' first preseason game with a dislocated shoulder and will miss some time. Mahomes said that the team is thankful Brown's injury wasn't more severe but that the team is feeling his veteran presence.

"I guess we're lucky that it wasn't as bad as it could have been," Mahomes said, per Adam Teicher of ESPN.com. "We lose a little bit of that veteran-type receiver in that room. We have other guys that can replace him a little bit, but to have that much talent and have a good understanding of what I want ... hopefully we're getting him back sooner rather than later."

Mahomes continued by saying that the young receivers on the roster need to "keep getting better and better every day" in order for the Chiefs to stay successful in Brown's absence.

Brown signed with the Chiefs in the 2024 offseason after spending the previous two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. He is coming off of a year in which he had 51 catches for 574 yards and four touchdowns, but he did this with multiple different quarterbacks on a Cardinals team that went 4-13 in 2023.

He has shown more explosion in the past, with his best season coming in 2021. That year, he had 91 catches for 1,008 yards and six touchdowns with the Baltimore Ravens. The Chiefs hope he can revert back to that production with Mahomes under center.

If Brown is out for any time during the regular season, Kansas City will roll forward with players like Xavier Worthy, Skyy Moore and Kadarius Toney in bigger roles.

NFL Rumors: Chiefs' Marquise Brown Expected to Miss 4-6 Weeks With Shoulder Injury

Kansas City Chiefs wideout Marquise "Hollywood" Brown is expected to miss 4-6 weeks due to a dislocated sternoclavicular joint, according to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz.

That likely means he will miss at least the first two games of the regular season against the Baltimore Ravens (Thursday, Sept. 5) and Cincinnati Bengals (Sunday, Sept. 15).

"He'll miss some time," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters regarding Brown earlier in the week, noting that he wouldn't require surgery.

The 27-year-old wideout suffered the injury in the team's opening preseason game and was hospitalized, though he was released on Sunday. Tyreek Hill suffered a similar injury in 2019 during his time with the Chiefs and missed four games.

Kansas City revamped its receiver room this offseason given the struggles of that group last year and the uncertainty of Rashee Rice's status moving forward. Rice's offseason arrest for his involvement in a car accident led to eight charges levied against him.

Brown was one of two big-ticket acquisitions after the Chiefs signed him to a one-year, $7 million deal. The other was the selection of Texas speedster Xavier Worthy with the 28th overall pick during the first round in April's NFL draft.

The former has shown flashes of stardom during his five-year NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals, notching career highs in receptions (91) and receiving yards (1,008) during the 2021 season and a career-high in touchdown receptions (eight) in 2020.

Brown didn't get to play with Kyler Murray during the first 10 weeks of the season last year, however, and it showed—he finished the 2023 campaign with just 51 catches for 574 yards (a career low) and four scores.

His speed, however, was expected to be the perfect match for quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Reid's field-stretching offensive scheme. But given his latest injury, his regular-season debut with the team will be put on hold.

Chiefs' Marquise Brown Won't Need Surgery After Shoulder Injury; Week 1 Status TBD

The Kansas City Chiefs received some positive news regarding the dislocation of the sternoclavicular shoulder joint wide receiver Marquise Brown suffered during Saturday's preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"They were able to get the joint back into place without surgery, which is a positive,'' head coach Andy Reid said Monday, per ESPN's Adam Teicher. "Then we'll just see on the recovery. He is back in Kansas City now. He stayed over in Jacksonville until they got that thing situated.''

Reid was noncommittal about whether Brown, who was hospitalized with the injury, would be available for the Sept. 5 season opener against the Baltimore Ravens.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday that Brown was released from the hospital and able to return to the Chiefs.

Reid previously compared the injury to the one Tyreek Hill suffered in 2019 as a member of the Chiefs that forced him to miss four regular-season games.

"As far as the injuries go, Hollywood Brown has that same thing that Tyreek had down here, actually," the coach said, per Jordan Foote of Sports Illustrated. "Sternoclavicular post dislocation. They've taken him to the hospital. They'll check him out, and they're working on that as we speak.

"I think he'll miss some time. We'll just see where it's at. We're kind of going through it right now. We'll know more later on here."

Brown would miss out on the opportunity to play against the team that drafted him in the first round in 2019 if he is sidelined for the contest against the Ravens. He played three seasons for Baltimore before the AFC North team traded him to the Arizona Cardinals ahead of the 2022 campaign.

He was at his most productive with the Ravens, posting a career-best 1,008 receiving yards in 2021 and a career-best eight touchdown catches in 2020.

The 27-year-old finished last season with 51 catches for 574 yards and four touchdowns for the Cardinals.

Kansas City signed Brown this offseason as part of its overhaul of the wide receiver position that also included selecting Texas speedster Xavier Worthy in the first-round of the draft. If Brown is sidelined, Worthy will likely be asked to assume an even larger role in the offense.

Chiefs' Marquise Brown Released from Hospital After Suffering Collarbone Injury

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquise "Hollywood" Brown has been released from the hospital on Sunday after suffering a collarbone injury known as a sternoclavicular joint dislocation on Saturday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported.

It is "in question" whether Brown will be available for the Sept. 5 start to the Chiefs' regular season, per Schefter.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid compared the hurt to the collarbone injury suffered by Tyreek Hill when he played for the Chiefs in 2019, Jordan Foote reported for Kansas City Chiefs on Sports Illustrated.

Hill, who suffered the injury in Week 1 of the 2019 season, missed four regular-season games before returning just over one month later.

"I think he'll miss some time," Reid said about Brown Saturday night, per Foote. "We'll just see where it's at. We're kind of going through it right now. We'll know more later on here."

Brown appeared to suffer the injury on his first play of the Chiefs' preseason opener Saturday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The receiver caught an 11-yard pass from Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes before he was tackled to the ground by cornerback Montaric Brown.

Brown received attention on the sideline after the play before leaving the game, per ESPN's Adam Teicher.

The Chiefs signed Brown in free agency this offseason in the hopes of boosting the team's wide receiver depth around Mahomes. If Brown is forced to miss any time, the Chiefs may have to turn to 2024 first-round pick Xavier Worthy to step up in his absence.

Brown, who is heading into his sixth NFL season, made 51 receptions for 574 yards and four touchdowns in 14 starts for the Arizona Cardinals last season.
