NFL Draft 2012: Mid-Round Prospects Who Will Surprise at Next Level

Feb 10, 2012

Throughout the draft process, most of the talk centers around elite first-round talents. That's why players like Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Justin Blackmon and Trent Richardson are chief in the minds of football fans.

All of those players certainly have the potential to be great in the NFL, but that doesn't mean that others should be ignored. Every round of every draft features players who become quality contributors at the next level and even Pro-Bowl-caliber performers.

Here are three mid-round picks who have the ability to surprise many by ascending to that level in the pros.

RB Isaiah Pead, Cincinnati

Passing is at an all-time high in terms of importance in the NFL, but the running game can't be discounted. Establishing the run is still necessary as it helps open up the pass even more. However, there have been fewer backs going in the first round in recent years. This is because those taken later in the draft or even signed as undrafted free agents have had great success in the NFL.

One player who might fit the bill this year is Cincinnati running back Isaiah Pead. Although Pead is likely a fourth or fifth-round prospect, he has a lot of intriguing tools. He was extremely productive this past season as he rushed for over 1,200 yards, 12 touchdowns and reeled in 39 passes. On top of that, he has 4.4 speed. Teams are looking for backs who can do a little bit of everything, and that describes Pead perfectly.

DL Jared Crick, Nebraska

Entering the season, Nebraska defensive lineman Jared Crick was among the favorites to win many awards in the Big Ten as well as nationally. He was coming off back-to-back seasons with 9.5 sacks, but 2011 didn't go as planned as Crick missed the majority of the season with a torn pectoral muscle. That injury could really move him down draft boards and into the fourth round or so, but somebody is going to get a steal.

Crick seems like an absolutely ideal pick to play defensive end in a 3-4 system. He would be a great fit for a team like the Pittsburgh Steelers or Baltimore Ravens. If put in the right situation and given a chance to prove himself, Crick can be a playmaker at the next level. His success might be contingent upon what defensive system he ends up in, but he is much more talented than his draft position is likely to suggest.

WR Juron Criner, Arizona

Few wide receivers in the college game were more productive than Arizona's Juron Criner over the past two seasons. Not only did he have over 150 catches and nearly 2,200 combined yards, but he also caught 11 touchdowns in both 2010 and 2011. Criner was one of the few shining stars on a weak Arizona squad, but he doesn't seem to be getting much publicity and he could conceivably fall as far as the fourth round.

Criner may not have top-end speed, but he has incredible size at 6'4" and 215 lbs. He also has the ability to outleap most defenders. His unbelievable catch radius also means that he is capable of grabbing almost any pass thrown in his direction. Criner was one of the most impressive receivers at the Senior Bowl with six grabs for 77 yards and a score, and he should be able to produce in the NFL as well.

Arizona vs. UCLA Football: Bench-Clearing Brawl Ends Record First Half

Oct 21, 2011

Need to spice up an ESPN-televised Thursday night football game between a 1-5 Arizona squad that just fired its coach (Mike Stoops) and a usually-mediocre, completely-pathetic-tonight UCLA Bruins crew with a a lame-duck head coach in Rick Neuheisel?

Start with the highest-scoring first half ever for the Wildcats as a member of the Pac-12.

Mix in a referee-suited streaker who distracted the early stages of a melee.

And top it off with a full-on bench-clearing brawl replete with two ejections—Arizona corner Shaquille Richardson and UCLA receiver Taylor Embree—and an assortment of future suspendees after the tape is reviewed by the Pac-12 offices.

With four seconds left in the second quarter and UCLA in possession of the ball near midfield, the play was blown dead before the snap due to a Bruins false start. As the umpire takes the ball from Kevin Prince after blowing the play dead, a streaker runs into the officiating huddle suited up in ref stripes, before taking off and stripping down.

The officials were so distracted by that mess, they fail to shut down the beginnings of verbal sparring that quickly turned physical.

Two of the main instigators—Richardson, a former UCLA recruit who left the team after a theft charge, and Embree—were ejected from the contest.

Before that entertaining nonsense, Arizona—that's right, Arizona, which consistently got its teeth kicked in against its last 10 Division-I (FBS) opponents—was nearly freaking perfect.

How close to perfect?

Quarterback Nick Foles was automatic, completing right around 80 percent of his throws.

Star receiver Juron Criner looked the part, scoring three touchdowns in the opening 30 minutes, pulling down eight receptions.

The Arizona rushing game completely dominated the Bruins defense in that span, for 174 yards including 77 on six carries from Keola Antolin and four for 41 from freshman sensation Ka'Deem Carey.

Even lightly used walk-on Gino Crump had eight catches for 87 yards in the first half.

And Arizona was doing all this just over a week after Mike Stoops was let go by athletic director Greg Byrne, leaving Tim Kish in his first ever head-coaching gig after 36 years as an assistant. Maybe they waited too long.

Although he is the most extreme of long shots to get the job long term—he was formerly the defensive coordinator of a unit allowing nearly 37 points per game before the night—Kish can always claim one dominating performance.

Arizona seemed more creative offensively, particularly in its running schemes.

The players were loose and aggressive.

The defense was even willing to freaking blitz.

And John Bonano, in his first-ever start as the placekicker, was perfect on extra points (6-for-6) and field goals (2-for-2), a breath of fresh air after the cringe-worthy combo of Alex Zendejas and Jaime Salazar.

As weak as the Pac-12 South is, with the exception of Arizona State and USC—which is ineligible for the Pac-12 championship due to NCAA sanctions—the left-for-dead Arizona Wildcats appeared on Thursday night to be able to make some noise over the second-half of the season.

Oh, and consider Rick Neuheisel this week's Mike Stoops.

Between the blowout, the emotional meltdown and an 18-26 record in Westwood, it would be shocking if he is still the coach of his alma mater at this time next week, especially after seeing firsthand what a coaching shakeup can do in Tucson.

Arizona Football: Is Mike Stoops' Program on the Backslide?

Sep 9, 2011

Mike Stoops' program at Arizona is no longer rising.

Oklahoma State's 37-14 choke slam of the Wildcats on ESPN and ESPN3D Thursday night sets up a nightmare scenario entering the squad's three toughest games over the next three weeks: At home against the conference's top two teams, Stanford and Oregon, before a road trip to Los Angeles to face USC.

That has to be one of the most brutal stretches over that span of anyone in the country.

The beatings sustained by the Wildcats over the last two years by college football's upper tier are troubling.

Included in the string of blowouts since the end of 2009 are these throttlings:

A 33-0 loss to Nebraska, led by Ndamukong Suh, in the Holiday Bowl

A 36-10 loss to Oklahoma State in the Alamo Bowl last December

A 42-17 loss on The Farm at Stanford

A 48-29 loss to eventual national runner-up Oregon

Those are scores akin to what the program saw on the regular under the most maligned coach in Arizona history, John Mackovic.

And whenever Arizona starts to seem like a legitimate player on the national scene in recent years, the season inevitably crumbles.

Last year, after starting out 7-1, including a win over then top-10 Iowa, the Wildcats lost their last five, capped by that Alamo Bowl hammering by the Cowboys.

In 2009, Arizona opened with six wins in its first eight games before collapsing late in the season, losing three of the last five, costing the program its first real shot at the Rose Bowl in over a decade.

This year, Arizona will struggle to get off the floor at all, that minefield of early powers likely to steal any semblance of confidence immediately.

There is a list of excuses for a showing like Thursday night's beating:

Star receiver Juron Criner, the best player on the team, underwent surgery for appendicitis and did not make the trip.

Arizona was playing without four defensive starters (Adam Hall, Jake Fischer, Jonathan McKnight, Willie Mobley), all of whom blew their knees out before the season started.

It was the first prime-time game for Arizona's five brand-new offensive linemen. And they looked completely overwhelmed at times, particularly in the ground game. The Cats managed a meek 41 rushing yards.

But none of those issues are severe enough to justify what happened in Stillwater.

There were a bunch of penalties (11) the adjustments were made extremely slowly and the sidelines seemed devoid of emotion, besides Stoops' usual ranting.

It's not just the ugly losses and losing skids that raise concern. While assistant coaches switching jobs is par for the college game, the rate at which Stoops' crew have jetted Tucson over the last three years is not healthy for continuity.

Sonny Dykes, the man who set up the "Air Zona" spread attack, left after a short stay to take over at Louisiana Tech in 2010.

Last year's defensive coordinator, Greg Brown, bolted after one season for lowly Colorado.

And even Mike Stoops' own brother, Mark, left for the same job—defensive coordinator at Florida State—where he is thriving on a national contender.

That doesn't start to touch on all of the defections, as multiple position coaches have come and gone quickly (Duane Akina, anyone?) in recent years.

Stoops can seem obnoxious at times, berating everyone within earshot on the sidelines, a constant temper tantrum in waiting.

But he did rebuild Arizona from its all-time lows of the John Mackovic era back into a reasonably respectable program. Unfortunately for Stoops, people are now expecting that reasonably respectable program to turn Rose Bowl worthy.

And if it that's going to happen, serious changes are needed, mainly in the way of adding talented depth and more sound schemes.

If what happened at Oklahoma State is any indication (right now, it's the only real indication), Arizona's momentum is rolling in the opposite direction of Pasadena.

A victory over Heisman-fave Luck and Stanford will ease the coach's suddenly shaky standing and avert disaster for the season in the process.

Stoops needs the next one.

It was as ugly as it should've been on Saturday night. Arizona overwhelmed Northern Arizona 41-10, showing off a high-powered passing game that was set up by an effective 60 minutes from the five brand-new starters on the offensive line...

2011 Pac-12 Football Simulation, Predictions and Preview

Aug 30, 2011

Once known as the incompetent conference of the Big Six, the Pac-12 has solidified its standing in the college football world. While Colorado has been dormant for nearly a decade, the addition of a Utah Utes program that's accumulated 42 wins in the past four seasons instills credibility and depth to the league. Once USC is back to full-force in 2012, it's not inconceivable for the Pac-12 to challenge the Big Ten as the second-best conference in the land.

Oregon brings back a loaded squad fresh off a runner-up finish in the National Championship game last season, with stars LaMichael James and Darron Thomas ready to defend their conference crown. Overwhelmed with experience on the offensive side of the ball, Oregon can theoretically improve upon the nation's best offensive attack, which averaged 47 points per game last season. The Ducks face an early test against LSU in Dallas in Week 1.

Oregon isn't the only one vying for a national championship out in the West. Coming off their thrashing of Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl, Stanford brings back golden boy Andrew Luck to try and run the table this season. Losing coach Jim Harbaugh to the NFL will hurt the program, but coach David Shaw, a former Cardinal, should be able to maintain the momentum from 2010.

A recurring narrative in the conference will be a focus on the head coaches, as Arizona's Mike Stoops, UCLA's Rick Neuheisel, Washington State's Paul Wulff, Arizona State's Dennis Erickson and even California's Jeff Tedford could be out of work if their teams don't reach the bowl season. Nueheisel and Stoops will especially be on the hot seat, as their output hasn't met the hype surrounding their respective schools.

Using our college football simulation engine, WhatIfSports.com simulated thousands of college football games to create this Pac-12 Preview. Team ratings, player ratings and depth charts are accurate as of August 19th. What you see in the WIS-Pac-12 Predictions table is the most likely outcome based on the computer simulations. The team-by-team schedules use Absolute Records, which you can learn more about below. Those same game-by-game simulations also generate average points per game for both teams.

For this analysis, thousands of college football games are simulated, with the sum of the winning percentages of those games being our final predicted record. As can be noted, sometimes a team is "favored" (wins more than 50% of the time) in a different number of our games than the expected record shows. We list this record as the Absolute Record. The assumption of the Absolute Record is that the more likely scenario always happens. Since we know that it does not, our expected record (in the table above) is far more accurate. Also, especially since we are rounding, it is possible for a team to win a game more often, yet score the same or fewer points on average. In those cases, for Absolute Records, we always take higher winning percentage and are not predicting a tie or a win by an underdog. This is another reason why the expected records are more accurate, as the teams are so evenly matched, the game could easily go either way.

Oregon

Steve Summers of eDuck.com is our Oregon Ducks insider:

The Pac-12's defending champion dominated the conference last season, coming just 3-points short of the BCS title. This year's Ducks are loaded at every position and boast the top running back in the nation and one of the very best quarterbacks. Slowing down Chip Kelly's offense is a major task and the Ducks look to be better defensively from a team that was ranked No. 1 in the nation last season for several weeks in a row. The opening game against LSU will likely match the No. 1 and 2 teams and the winner should hold the No. 1 spot for the rest of the season.

Stanford

Andy Drukarev of theBootleg.com is our Stanford Cardinal insider:

Veteran quarterback and 2010 Heisman runner-up Andrew Luck as well as several key pieces from last year's Orange Bowl champion squad are back, but there are holes to be filled along both lines and question marks that come with a re-worked coaching staff. Even assuming good health, it remains to be seen whether the Card will be able to recover from the loss of the inaugural Paul Horning Award winner Owen Marecic, senior defensive tackle Sione Fua and a quartet of starting offensive linemen (including valuable "jack-of-all-trades" James McGillicuddy). That challenge may have the biggest impact on Stanford's success in 2011, although replacing the contributions of the myriad departed coaches is also a concern, as is navigating a difficult second-half schedule. Nevertheless, the outlook for Stanford's upcoming season is the brightest it has been in many years. Having the best college football player in the nation along with a smattering of future first-round NFL picks on the roster should lead to another successful, "recruiting scandal-free" campaign for the squeaky-clean Cardinal.

A turnaround is going to be the responsibility of an offense that sputtered badly last fall and must retool the backfield. Quarterback, in particular, has been a nagging issue in these parts since Aaron Rodgers graduated in 2004. This year's answer might be Zach Maynard, who last took a snap two years ago at Buffalo.

When spring camp closed, sophomore Keith Price had emerged as the likely successor to Jake Locker at quarterback. A good athlete, with a strong arm, his lack of experience will be his tallest hurdle to immediate success. The encouraging news for the heir apparent is that he inherits all of Locker's best weapons, including all-star RB Chris Polk and WR Jermaine Kearse. There's plenty of depth and a blend of youth and experience to help ease the transition.

The good news is that unlike a year ago, the program welcomes back a returning starter under center. Utah ventures off into new territory as a member of the elite in the Pac 12. How they respond week to week over a 12 game season, with the physical toll a BCS schedule will impose on them, is still unknown. The front-line talent is as good as any in the South division, but the depth and lack of experience in the secondary and at running back could be their downfall. The Pac 12 opener at USC is going to be a measuring stick game that could propel the Utes to a division title and a spot in the inaugural conference championship game or send them spiraling toward a .500 season.

A decent schedule and a team with as much confidence as under the Pete Carroll era, the Trojans have had a productive spring. Hope of exceeding mollified expectations will rest on an incomplete offense. The skill positions are outstanding, led by next-level QB Nick Foles, RB Keola Antolin, and Juron Criner and the rest of a dangerous receiving corps. The line, however, has been stripped of all five of last year's starters, a major concern with no easy solution. Line play, in general, will be an issue now that defensive ends Brooks Reed and Ricky Elmore are both in the NFL.

There is certainly enough talent and experience on this Arizona State team to make a strong statement this season. It's Rick Neuheisel's make-or-break season. It comes down to: If he wins, he'll clean up in recruiting and things will be rolling, with veterans returning in 2012; if he loses, he's probably lost his dream job. Neuheisel has recruited well since being at UCLA and that talent is coming of age, and the defense is deep, but the question will be at offensive line, where the Bruins have suffered attrition, and that pesky quarterback position.
