The best in bodybuilding has taken to Las Vegas this week for Joe Weider's Olympia Fitness and Performance Weekend, home to the prestigious Mr. Olympia event.

Saturday, the history books will add a new winner, with several former winners looking to secure their second title.

One such competitor is 2023 winner Derek Lunsford, who outperformed the rest of the field en route to his first Mr. Olympia title, and will have a chance to become the first repeat champion since Mamdouh Elssbiay in 2020 and '21.

Saturday Events

Mr. Olympia

Men's Physique Olympia

Bikini Olympia

Classic Physique Olympia

All events are scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Past Winners

Joining Lunsford as previous champions competing in this year's competition are 2022 winner Hadi Choopan and 2019 victor Brandon Curry. They will look to become multi-time titleholders, joining the sport's most decorated stars.

Multi-time champions have been common since the inaugural days of the event.

Larry Scott kicked things off, winning the first and second events. Sergio Oliva picked up where he left off, winning the next three. While those two athletes would lay the groundwork for the industry, introducing the Terminator himself sparked interest in the sport and help catapult it to new heights.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the most recognizable face in the industry's long history, won six consecutive Mr. Olympia events from 1970 through 1975 before Hollywood came calling.

He returned to the industry in 1980 and proved he still had it, winning a seventh title.

Frank Zane and Dorian Yates would go on to leave their lasting legacies as repeated victors who dominated the sport for extended periods before Jay Cutler and Phil Heath all defined eras in bodybuilding with their long strings of dominance.

Phil Haney and Ronnie Coleman are the most prolific winners, tied for eight Mr. Olympia victories, making them the most decorated to compete in the event.

It remains to be seen if Lunsford or Choopan can add a second title to their resumes. They have tough competition in the form of Samson Douda, a bodybuilder whose physique is rivaled by few and could easily be deemed the best in the show on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

The quality of talent in the sport right now, too, could make it difficult for one competitor to go on the type of run that Schwarzenegger, Coleman, Haney, and the others have experienced. The deeper the talent pool, the less likelihood that a given performer can fend off his opposition for any extended period of time.

Still, there is an opportunity for history to be made Saturday with a Lunsford or Choopan victory.

And an entirely different kind of history should Douda, the most obvious threat to either man, earn the nod from the judges.

Saturday, October 12: Mr. Olympia Finals (7 p.m.)

Prize Money

The purse has yet to be announced, but the total prize money is expected to top $1.6 million, the most in the event's history.

Qualified Competitors

  • Derek Lunsford (USA)
  • Hadi Choopan (Iran)
  • Samson Dauda (United Kingdom)
  • Theo Leguerrer (France)
  • Rafael Brandao (Brazil)
  • Martin Fitzwater (USA)
  • Tonio Burton (USA)
  • Akim Williams (USA)
  • Brandon Curry (USA)
  • William Bonac (Netherlands)
  • Behrooz Tabani (Iran)
  • Nathan De Asha (United Kingdom)
  • John Jewett (USA)
  • Mohamed Foda (Egypt)
  • Jonatha Delarosa (USA)
  • Chinedu Andrew Obiekea (United Arab Emirates)
  • Hunter Labrada (USA)
  • Bruno Santos (Brazil)

Prediction

With Nick Walker unexpectedly dropping out of this year's competition late, the field has become even less predictable than it already was.

Lunsford is the defending champion and Choopan had a wonderful competition two years ago. Either could win another Mr. Olympia title in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

Brandon Curry won the event in 2019 and has finished in second place twice (2020 and 2021) and fourth place on two occasions (2022 and 2023).

Obiekea, known more popularly as Andrew Jacked, lives up to the moniker and Dauda has been chasing bodybuilding's premier title for some time.

Any of those five competitors, and probably two or three others, could realistically win the event.

Still, Lunsford and Choopan are at the peak of their profession. Each has worked to improve key parts of their physique. And after a second-place finish last year, the Iranian is ready for a second title.

Choopan wins his second Mr. Olympia.

Overall Standings

  1. Stoltman: 53 points
  2. Hooper: 47.5 points
  3. Singleton: 36 points
  4. Mathew Ragg (Canada): 35.5 points
  5. Tristain Hoath (Canada): 33.5 points

Stoltman carried a three-point lead into Saturday and extended his advantage, finishing third in the Conan's Wheel (777 degrees, eight points), tied for second in the Terrain Deadlift (8.5 points reps) and first in the Atlas Stones (five stones in 38.14 seconds, 10 points).

He has now finished either first or second in the past five World's Strongest Man competitions.

Hooper, who won last year's competition and has also won the last two Arnold Strongman Classics, actually gained ground on Stoltman during the Conan's Wheel, putting up the second-best performance (821 degrees) for nine points.

But he lost ground on the Terrain Deadlift (six reps, six points) and Atlas Stones (four stones in 37.35 seconds, nine points), conceding his title in the process.

Singleton just barely finished above Ragg for third place after failing to score more than five points in any of the three events on Sunday.

His Canadian counterpart had a fantastic day, meanwhile, with the best score on the Terrain Deadlift (eight reps) and solid performances in the Conan's Wheel (748 degrees, seven points) and Atlas Stones (four stones in 49.43 seconds, six points).

Saturday contained the Arnold Classic final, which appeared to be a two-man race after Choopan and Dauda were called out multiple times in Friday's prejudging. It was Choopan's first time participating in the Classic, as the man nicknamed the Persian Wolf has typically been one of the finalists in recent years at Olympia Fitness & Performance Weekend.

He was named Mr. Olympia in 2022, although his finish as the runner-up in 2023 behind Derek Lunsford came as a disappointment relative to the rest of his career. As for Dauda, he entered the 2024 Classic searching for his second straight title after winning the competition in 2023.

Choopan emerged victorious, winning the Arnold Classic as well as the $300,000 prize in his first time competing in the event. Dauda earned a No. 2 finish.

Saturday also featured the Strongman Classic event, with a loaded field that included 2023 champion Mitchell Hooper as well as 2018 World's Strongest Man Hafthór Björnsson. Although Björnsson held a lead after the first day of competition, Hooper finished with 52 points at the end of the event and earned back-to-back victories.

Angelica Jardine was the victor of the Arnold Strongwoman Classic with a score of 45 points, barely edging out runner-up Olga Liashchuk after she finished with 44.5 points.

Suffice to say, it was another successful year for the festival. The 2025 edition is already shaping up to be another fierce competition, as Schwarzenegger announced that the Arnold Classic first place prize money will be raised to $500,000 (via Generation Iron).

Several of the major events in the 2024 Arnold Sports Festival wrapped up on Saturday. This included the Strongman Classic, the Strongwoman Classic, men's Physique, and the Arnold Classic.

The Arnold Classic in particular has become one of bodybuilding's premier events, with top competitors around the globe vying for first place. The 2024 group featured a pair of decorated individuals, Hadi Choopan and Samson Dauda. Choopan, known as the Persian Wolf, made his first appearance at the event after winning the title of Mr. Olympia in 2022. He was also the Mr. Olympia runner-up in 2023

As for Dauda, he returned to defend his title after emerging victorious in the 2023 Arnold Classic. It appeared to be a two-man race heading into the final day, as both Choopan and Dauda were featured in the first and final callouts during prejudging on Friday.

At the end of the day, Choopan dethroned Dauda to win the $300,000 prize and earn some redemption for his second-place Mt. Olympia finish. Here are the full results for the Arnold Classic as well as several other notable events on Saturday.

The 2024 Arnold Sports Festival continued on Friday, as the 36th annual edition of the fitness and sporting competition co-founded by bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger returned for another year.

The festival features athletes competing in a variety of events outside of bodybuilding such as wrestling, gymnastics, and martial arts. Many of the events took place in Ohio on Friday at the Batelle Grand, the Columbus Convention Center, the Ohio Expo Center, and the Columbus Athenaeum.

The festival still features one of the most prominent events in bodybuilding, the Arnold Classic. The 2024 field of participants is headlined by Hadi Choopan, who won the title of Mr. Olympia in 2022 and was the runner-up in 2023. 2023 Arnold Classic champion Samson Dauda also returned to defend his crown.

Although every marquee event wasn't decided and the competition will continue throughout the weekend, here are the results from the major events that were completed.

Fitness International Results:

The Arnold Strongman Classic kicked off on Friday and will conclude on Saturday. 2018 World's Strongest Man Hafthór Björnsson sat atop the leaderboard at the end of the first day with 21 points. He was followed close behind by Mitchell Hooper with 20 points of his own, while Evan Singleton currently sits in third place with 15 points.

Björnsson earned his lead with a first-place performance in the Elephant Bar Deadlift after a successful attempt of 456 kilograms. It marked the No. 13 ASC event that he has won.

In the Arnold Strongwoman Classic, Andrea Thompson remained one of the most dominant forces in the sport. She accumulated 23 points, while Lucy Underdown and Hannah Linzay enter the second day sitting at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

The prejudging for the Arnold Classic occurred as well, with Choopan and Dauda unsurprisingly featured in the first callout. Joining them were James Hollingshead, Jonathan De La Rosa, Antoine Vaillant, and Rafael Brandao.

Dauda and Choopan returned to the stage for the fifth callout to wrap up the prejudging, as it appears to be a two-man race heading into the final on Saturday.

The 2024 Arnold Sports Festival kicks off this Thursday, and Arnold Schwarzenegger's annual celebration of fitness and sporting competition promises to be as big as ever. The weekend-long extravaganza will, of course, be highlighted by one of bodybuilding's marquee events, the Arnold Classic.

Though The Olympia remains the top prize in bodybuilding, the Classic has become a prestigious International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) competition in its own right. However, it's far from the only event that will take place in Columbus this weekend.

From weightlifting and martial arts events to dance, gymnastics and even foosball, the Arnold Sports Festival offers a little something for every sporting enthusiast.

This year's festival will run from February 29 through March 3 and will involve multiple locations, including the Columbus Convention Center, the Hilton Columbus Downtown, the Battelle Grande, The Columbus Athenaeum and the Ohio Expo Center.

Arnold Classic Preview

As always, the Arnold Classic will feature several of the top IFBB pros, including reigning champion Samson Dauda. Dauda's top competition may come from 2022 Mr. Olympia—and 2023 Olympia runner-up—Hadi Choopan.

Choopan has never competed at the Arnold Classic before, but he did finish five spots ahead of Dauda at the 2022 Olympia and a spot ahead of him at the 2023 Olympia. Derek Lunsford won the latter event but won't be competing in Columbus this weekend.

Other top contenders include Antoine Vaillant, Marcello De Angelis, James Hollingshead and Rafael Brandao.

Brandao was largely inactive in 2023 and will look to unveil a new and improved physique in Columbus this weekend.

"I feel like I'm a different guy. I know I'm bigger, leaner, drier, harder," Brandao said, per Greg Patuto of Generation Iron. "You know, also, yeah I think this year that I took off, I'm going to bring a lot of change to the stage."

Whoever leaves the stage as the winner will take home quite the prize. Last year, the Arnold Classic increased the first-prize payout from $200,000 to $300,000. While that's still less than the Mr. Olympia receives, it's more than enough to ensure that the top competitors are at the top of their game.

We'll find out who the winner will be on Saturday night, and fans who can't attend in person can follow the action via the Arnold Sports Festival live stream.

Fans who do converge on Columbus this weekend will have a plethora of events to enjoy both before and after the Arnold Classic itself.

Former bodybuilding champion Chad McCrary has died at the age of 49.

Per TMZ Sports, Lance McCrary, Cody's brother, confirmed his brother died and thanked people for offering their condolences "during this difficult time."

An obituary in the Texarkana Gazette stated McCrary died on Jan. 4. The official cause of death is unknown.

Per Declan Gallagher of Men's Journal, McCrary's professional bodybuilding career began in 2000 when he weighed 160 pounds. He bulked up to 240 pounds by 2003.

McCrary was paralyzed from the waist down in 2005 following an accident in a cross-country motocross race, but he was able to keep competing as a bodybuilder in the wheelchair division.

In a profile on WheelchairBodybuilding.com, McCrary made it sound like there wasn't much of an adjustment for him to remain competitive after his accident.

"I was already evolved in bodybuilding and just carried it over to the wheelchair. ... Just kept lifting and had to modify most all standing exercises to a seated or lying position," he said.

Gallagher noted McCrary most recently competed in the Wheelchair Olympia and Arnold Classic in 2022. He placed top-10 in the former and finished fourth in the latter.

McCrary won the 2016 NPC Wheelchair Nationals in the heavyweight and masters divisions.

The bodybuilding world crowned a new Mr. Olympia Saturday night in Orlando as Derek Lunsford captured the most coveted prize in the sport, besting 2022 winner Hadi Choopra among others to secure the Sandow Trophy.

In doing so, he became the first athlete in the history of the event to win titles in two different divisions, with his first coming in 2021 as part of the 212 competition.

To top off the historic night, Lunsford was presented the People's Choice Award.

What was the final prize money taken home by the 2023 champ and how much did the runners-up score by way of their finish?

Choopan followed up last year's emotional victory with a second-place finish.

Despite another strong performance on the grand stage of bodybuilding, his 2023 may most be remembered for a moment late in the night in which he posed for a photo with the rest of the field and abruptly left the stage before the remaining photo ops could be completed.

Perhaps it was a moment of personal frustration or disappointment, but it is one that is likely to hover over Choopan like a dark cloud for the foreseeable future.

The meteoric rise of third-place finisher Samson Dauda, who rose three spots in the following last year's debut in the competition. As he continues to grow and gain experience in the sport, do not be surprised if this time next year, he is routinely discussed as one of the best bodybuilders in the business.
