Rangers' Max Scherzer Leaves World Series Game 3 vs. Diamondbacks with Back Injury

It was a short night for Max Scherzer.

The Texas Rangers veteran pitcher was removed before the bottom of the fourth inning during Game 3 of the World Series due to back tightness.

"I'm in full spasm," Scherzer told reporters after the game. "It locked up pretty good."

He threw just 36 pitches in his short outing, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out one batter. He didn't allow a run.

Ken Rosenthal reported during the Fox broadcast that the Rangers didn't know if the back tightness stemmed from Scherzer being struck by a hit ball earlier in the game

He was replaced by Jon Gray, who was a potential option to start Game 4 before his appearance on Monday.

Scherzer, 39, has battled through a number of injuries in recent seasons. Most recently, he dealt with a strained teres major muscle in his right shoulder, suffered in September, that kept him out of action until the ALCS.

When healthy he's been mostly solid for the Rangers, going 4-2 in eight regular season starts with a 3.20 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 53 strikeouts in 45 innings.

He struggled in two appearances during the ALCS, however, going 0-1 with a 9.45 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and six strikeouts in 6.2 innings.

Losing Scherzer beyond Monday night could seriously alter Texas' rotation in this series. The team will already have to adjust for Game 4, given the need to bring on Gray a game early, and now the team's approach to a potential Game 7 may be altered as well.

Bullpen games aren't ideal for this Rangers team, as that group hasn't been a strength this season. The bullpen has been better in the postseason than it was during the regular season, but Scherzer's injury could put a lot of pressure on them if this series stretches to six or seven games.

Rangers' Jordan Montgomery Disappoints Fans in Game 2 WS Loss to Ketel Marte, D-Backs

The 2023 World Series is knotted following the Arizona Diamondbacks' 9-1 victory over the Texas Rangers in Game 2 on Saturday night at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Rangers starter Jordan Montgomery was shelled for four runs on nine hits in six innings before being pulled in favor of Andrew Heaney. He also became the first pitcher in the World Series to toss six-plus innings with no strikeouts since Jimmy Key in 1996.

While Montgomery struggled, the Rangers offense also couldn't get anything going against Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly, who finished with one earned run on three hits and nine strikeouts in seven innings.

The Rangers offense also manager just four hits the entire night and catcher Mitch Garver drove in the team's lone run with a home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

While the offense didn't give the pitching staff much insurance, fans were ultimately left disappointed by the performance of Montgomery:

The Rangers acquired Montgomery and reliever Chris Stratton from the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline in exchange for infield prospect Thomas Saggese, pitching prospect Tekoah Roby and left-handed reliever John King.

Montgomery's performance on Saturday was a disappointment, and if the Rangers lose the World Series, fans will certainly look back on his performance and wonder what could have been if he could've helped Texas jump out to a 2-0 series lead.

Game 3 of the World Series, which is tied 1-1, is set for Monday at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.

Adolis García Praised by Rangers' Dane Dunning After World Series HR: 'He's That Guy'

Adolis García added to his postseason legend on Friday night with a walk-off homer in Game 1 of the World Series to give the Texas Rangers a 6-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Rangers reliever Dane Dunning did his best to sum up what García, who is fresh off being named ALCS MVP, has meant to the Rangers during this postseason run after the victory.

"He's just a bad man," Dunning told ESPN's Jeff Passan. "Wow. That's all I can really say. He's just—he's that guy."

García's latest heroic moment came in the bottom of the 11th when he launched a 97 mph fastball from Diamondbacks reliever Miguel Castro that cleared the fence in right field.

García got his moment in the 11th inning after Corey Seager tied the game with a two-run home run off Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald in the bottom of the ninth.

The 30-year-old García is in the midst one of the best postseasons in MLB history. His homer gave him 22 RBI in the playoffs, breaking the previous record of 21 set by David Freese of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011.

García's hit the first walk-off homer in a World Series game since Max Muncy gave the Los Angeles Dodgers a 3-2 victory in an 18-inning marathon against the Boston Red Sox in Game 3 of the 2018 Fall Classic.

It's the first walk-off blast in Game 1 of the World Series since Kirk Gibson's iconic homer off Dennis Eckersley in 1988.

García finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. El Bombi has driven in at least one run in seven consecutive games dating back to Game 2 of the ALCS against the Houston Astros.

This was García's fifth consecutive game with a homer. He's one away from tying the MLB record of six set by Daniel Murphy with the New York Mets in 2015.

Friday marked the Rangers' first home victory since Game 3 of the ALDS against the Baltimore Orioles. They lost all three games at Globe Life Field to the Astros before winning the final two games in Houston to clinch a berth in the World Series.

García and the Rangers will look to continue their positive momentum in Game 2 on Saturday night. Jordan Montgomery will start for the AL champions, with the Diamondbacks sending Merrill Kelly to the mound.

Adolis García added another chapter to his legendary postseason with a game-winning solo home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Texas Rangers a 6-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday evening.

García entered the World Series red hot after amassing five home runs, 15 RBI and seven runs alongside a 1.293 OPS to earn American League Championship Series MVP honors against the Houston Astros. He has now hit homers (six total) in five straight contests dating back to Game 4 of the ALCS, and he's hit eight homers over this postseason.

On Friday, García went 3-for-4 with the aforementioned homer and a first inning RBI single that put Texas up 2-0.

García now holds the all-time single-season postseason record with 22 RBI.

Texas shortstop Corey Seager set the table for García's heroics by smashing a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at five.

Seager has been amazing in the playoffs as well after a tremendous regular season, hitting four homers with eight RBI and a 1.157 OPS thus far.

His no-doubt home run single-handedly changed the narrative after the Diamondbacks jumped on Rangers starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi for five runs, including a Corbin Carroll two-RBI triple and a Tommy Pham solo home run.

But García and Seager stole the show late, and fans and analysts were in awe for their heroics.

Texas will host Arizona for Game 2 on Saturday at 8:03 p.m. ET. Jordan Montgomery will get the ball for Texas, while Merrill Kelly will take the hill for Arizona.

Rangers' Adolis García Hyped by MLB Fans for 'Legendary' ALCS in G7 Win vs. Astros

Adolis García wished the boos were louder.

The Texas Rangers' slugger embraced being the most hated man in Houston and tortured Astros' fans at Minute Maid Park all night long as his squad punched their ticket to the World Series with a 11-4 victory over the reigning champs in Game 7 of the ALCS.

García, took his scorching-hot streak to a whole other level Monday night, saving his best performance of the series for the biggest moment. The two-time All-Star went 4-of-5 at the plate with four hits, two homers and five RBI in a magnificent showing when his squad needed him most.

It became frankly bewildering that the Astros continued to pitch to him, though it certainly led to a few more highlight reel moments.

García's performance wasn't just great, it was historic and legendary. He broke the MLB postseason record for most RBIs in a series with 15, surpassing former Rangers' hero Nelson Cruz, who was on the last Texas team to make a world series appearance.

It's thanks to Garcia's work over the past 24 hours that has the franchise set to make its first appearance on baseball's biggest stage since 2011. Unsurprisingly, he was named ALCS MVP:

And there was no shortage of superlatives from Rangers' fans over García's incredible performance.

García and the Rangers will await the winner of Tuesday night's NLCS Game 7 between the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks to battle it out for a World Series title for the first time in over a decade.

Adolis García is going down in the history books as a playoff hero for the Texas Rangers and won ALCS MVP in the process:

The slugger helped the visitors set the tone in Monday's Game 7 of the American League Championship Series against the Houston Astros in historic fashion. With an RBI single in the first inning, solo homer in the third inning and two-RBI single in the fourth, he both broke the game open and set a Major League Baseball record for RBI in a single playoff series:

The slugger added one more home run in the eighth inning, giving him 15 RBI for the series.

That it was García made it all the more notable given his central role in this series beyond just his impressive individual play.

After he emphatically celebrated a home run during Game 5, Astros pitcher Bryan Abreu hit him with a pitch later in the contest. That sparked a benches-clearing incident and a number of punishments.

As the Associated Press noted, the league said all six umpires working the game believed the pitch was intentional. As a result, Abreu was suspended for two games—which will be served next year—and Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr., Rangers pitcher Matt Bush and Houston manager Dusty Baker were all fined.

The Houston crowd greeted García with plenty of boos in Game 6, but he answered them by launching a grand slam as part of a Rangers blowout.

He helped set the stage for a decisive Game 7 and then took full advantage by making history.
