Guardians vs. Orioles Betting Odds, Player Props and Picks for April 15

Joe Tansey
Apr 15, 2025

The Cleveland Guardians and Baltimore Orioles both face ideal hitting matchups on Tuesday.

Guardians starter Logan Allen allowed four earned runs in his first road start and can be vulnerable against right-handed bats, of which there are many in Baltimore’s lineup.

Charlie Morton has been hit well by three opponents in his first three Orioles starts. That trend could continue against a Cleveland offense that is less prone to strikeouts than others.

A pair of offensive outbursts against Allen and Morton could continue an early trend at Camden Yards, where four of five games have had at least nine runs.

Over 9 (-102)

The pitching matchup sets up for a potentially thrilling game at Camden Yards.

Charlie Morton’s 8.78 ERA stands out more than Logan Allen’s 3.50, but both hurlers are susceptible to giving up crooked numbers.

Allen let up four earned runs in his first road start of the season in San Diego. He also had a 5.20 ERA away from home in 2024.

Allen’s splits against right-handed batters are concerning as well. Righties hit .306 with 18 home runs against him in 2024.

Baltimore’s lineup is loaded with home-run hitting righties. Jordan Westburg is leading off, Adley Rutschman bats second and Tyler O’Neill is third. Gary Sanchez is getting the start at catcher, too, and can provide power from the middle of the order.

Morton conceded at least four earned runs in all three of his starts for the Orioles. He let up two home runs in his lone home start, which is a good sign for Jose Ramirez and Co.

The matchups are too juicy to ignore on both sides, so it would be surprising if the Guardians and Orioles struggle to combine for nine runs.

Charlie Morton Under 5.5 Strikeouts (+110)

Charlie Morton’s season strikeout total looks impressive, but it is inflated by a 10-punchout showing against the Boston Red Sox, who lead the majors in strikeouts entering Tuesday.

Morton had three and four strikeouts in his other two appearances for the Orioles.

Cleveland ranks 22nd in team strikeouts and Cole Ragans is the only starter to have more than six strikeouts against the Guardians in the last week.

Morton’s high walk rate doesn’t help either. He issued seven bases on balls in the last two starts, including five over five innings in his last outing against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The majority of Cleveland’s high-strikeout batters reside in the back half of the order, but they could be less susceptible to strikeouts for a few reasons.

Carlos Santana has a great history against Morton, Gabriel Arias had a pair of multi-hit games against the Royals and Kyle Manzardo has been Cleveland’s most patient hitter in the early season. They are three of the five Guardians hitters with 10+ strikeouts.

Carlos Santana Over 0.5 Hits (-135)

Santana has the best batter-versus-pitcher history in Tuesday’s game.

The veteran first baseman owns a .364 batting average in 11 career at-bats against Morton. He has two home runs and three RBIs versus Morton as well.

Santana recorded a hit in four of his last six games and he should receive more pitches to hit from his spot directly behind Jose Ramirez in the Guardians order.

He’s been better on the road as well in the young season with a .265 batting average and three multi-hit games away from Progressive Field.

Tyler Naquin Signs Guardians Contract as Pitcher After 8-Year MLB Career as Outfielder

Paul Kasabian
Mar 6, 2025
MLB: SEP 30 Padres at White Sox

Tyler Naquin, who spent eight MLB seasons as an outfielder, is trying to return to the bigs as a pitcher with the Cleveland Guardians, per the franchise's Player Development department.

Zack Meisel of The Athletic provided more information.

Naquin played in the majors from 2016-2023 for Cleveland, the Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets and Chicago White Sox, hitting .263 (.762 OPS) with 61 home runs and 237 RBI in 562 games.

It isn't uncommon for position players to successfully convert to pitchers, including Jacob DeGrom, Trevor Hoffman and Tim Wakefield. However, those players did so early in their careers, while Naquin is trying to make a dramatic change at age 33. Per Matt Snyder of CBS Sports, Naquin never pitched in college or the minors either.

As Meisel noted, though, Naquin certainly has notable arm strength. That could be of great service to him as he hopes to make the switch.

Naquin also has a great pitcher development staff by his side. Cleveland finished third in MLB in ERA last year (3.61) and first in reliever ERA (2.57). The pitching staff is loaded with players who have developed in the minors and excelled in the bigs, particularly in the bullpen (e.g. Emmanuel Clase, Cade Smith and Hunter Gaddis).

It's not impossible to see Naquin throwing fire out of the bullpen down the line. But for now, he's on the first step of a potentially long journey as he hopes to complete this comeback.

Cleveland Guardians Owner Larry Dolan Dies at Age 94

Minnesota Twins v Cleveland Guardians

The Cleveland Guardians announced Monday that team owner Larry Dolan died at the age of 94.

"Cleveland sadly lost one of its own today," the video announcement said. "Born in Cleveland Heights in 1931, Lawrence J. Dolan invested his entire life in greater Cleveland and impacted our community on so many levels."

He purchased the baseball team in February 2000, and the 2025 campaign will be the 26th year of ownership for the family. Major League Baseball approved Dolan's son, Paul, as the franchise's primary control person in 2013.

"We are saddened by the loss of our Dad, but lucky to have him as part of our lives as long as we did," Paul said in a statement. "He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was passionate about his family, work, our community and his love of our local sports teams, including owning the Cleveland Guardians."

Dolan met his wife, Eva, when he was attending Notre Dame and served two years as a First Lieutenant after enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps following graduation. He then began a career in law after serving in the military.

He is survived by Eva, their six children and their 21 grandchildren.

On the baseball side of things, Dolan purchased the team ahead of the 2000 season. Cleveland enjoyed nine playoff appearances and seven American League Central titles, including three in a row from 2016 to 2018, during his ownership tenure.

It also reached the 2016 World Series and advanced to last season's American League Championship Series after winning the AL Central.

"We are forever grateful for his passion supporting our Northeast Ohio community and the Cleveland Guardians organization," the video statement said. "Through his initial leadership, the Dolan family continues to be the longest tenured owners in franchise history."

Cleveland Guardians first baseman Josh Naylor could be heading to the Pacific Northwest.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported that Naylor has "been mentioned in trade talks" between the Guardians and the Seattle Mariners as the latter team looks for an upgrade at first base.

Naylor is entering his final year of team control and could hit free agency following the 2025 season.

Naylor hit .243/.320/.456 with 31 home runs and 108 RBIs in 2024. He was named to his first All-Star Game and helped Cleveland reach the ALCS.

While losing his bat would hurt the team's offense, his expiring contract could signal that his time with the team is heading towards the end and picking up some pitching depth from Seattle could be intriguing.

The Mariners went 85-77 and missed the postseason in 2024. Naylor's presence would add a third significant power bat alongside Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez and could help the team contend in the AL West.

Rocky Colavito, a nine-time MLB All-Star and Cleveland baseball legend, died at 91 on Tuesday, per MLB.com's Chris Haft.

The Guardians said in a statement that Colavito "passed peacefully at home today with family by his side in Bernville, Pennsylvania."

"Our collective hearts ache at the passing of Rocky," said Guardians senior vice president/public affairs Bob DiBiasio. "Rocky was a generational hero, one of the most popular players in franchise history. His popularity was evident across Northeast Ohio as sandlot ballplayers everywhere imitated Rocky's on-deck circle routine of kneeling, then as he stepped into the batter's box the stretching the bat over the shoulders and pointing the bat at the pitcher. I can proudly say I was one of them. Rocky loved our organization and always held the fans in the highest esteem. He would always say, 'I am thankful God chose me to play in Cleveland.' We send our most sincere condolences to the entire Colavito family, as well as his many teammates and other organizations impacted by his passing."

Colavito signed with Cleveland in 1951 as an undrafted amateur free agent and he made his MLB debut a few years later in 1955. He spent the first five years of his career in Cleveland, having a breakout season in 1958 when he hit 41 homers and 113 RBI. The following season, he had a career-high 42 home runs and 111 RBI as he was named to his first All-Star Team.

Also in 1959, he hit four home runs in a single game, something just eight players had done before him.

He joined the Detroit Tigers in 1960 and stayed with them until 1963, picking up a pair of All-Star appearances while with the team. After a one-year stint with the Kansas City Athletics, he returned to Cleveland in 1965.

Colavito finished out his career with stints with the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees. He hit 374 home runs, 1,159 RBI and had a career batting average of .266.

He was inducted into the Guardians Hall of Fame in 2006.

MLB Rumors: Andrés Giménez, Nick Sandlin Traded to Blue Jays; Guardians Get Horwitz

The Toronto Blue Jays are finalizing a trade to acquire second baseman Andrés Giménez and pitcher Nick Sandlin from the Cleveland Guardians, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported.

The Guardians will receive infielder Spencer Horwitz from the Blue Jays as part of the deal, per The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

Giménez, who turned 26 in September, has won three consecutive Gold Glove Awards with the Guardians.

He has five seasons and a club option remaining on the seven-year, $106.5 million contract he signed with Cleveland in 2023.

Giménez slashed .252/.298/.340 for the Guardians and led AL position players with 20 defensive runs saved in 2024. He also stole 30 bases for the second straight season.

His campaign for a second straight Platinum Glove was capped off by a highlight-reel defensive play against the New York Yankees in the 10th inning of a Game 3 ALCS victory.

Giménez is now set to join an infield staffed by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at first base and Bo Bichette at shortstop.

Both Guerrero and Bichette are currently set to hit free agency after the 2025 season, so the Blue Jays will need to make further commitments in order to cement the long-term future of their infield.

Horwitz started 37 games at second base last season, but finished the season mostly at first base or as DH after top prospect Will Wagner joined the team in August. Wagner's season was ended early by a knee injury, and he will retain rookie status heading into 2024.

The Blue Jays will also add Sandlin to the bullpen after the right-hander recorded a career-low -0.1 WAR through 68 appearances and 57.2 innings pitched with the Guardians last season. He finished his four seasons in Cleveland with a career 3.27 ERA.

Toronto will hope the addition of Giménez will help the club turn things around after last season's last-place finish in the AL East and disappointing news in the Tuesday night draft lottery. The Blue Jays entered the lottery with a 7.48 percent chance at selecting the No. 1 pick for the first time in franchise history, but instead dropped to No. 8.

MLB Rumors: Shane Bieber, Guardians Agree to 1-Year, $14M Contract in Free Agency

Shane Bieber's time in Cleveland has somewhat surprisingly been extended.

The veteran ace re-signed with the Guardians on Friday, per ESPN's Jeff Passan. The deal is for $14 million in 2025 and includes a $16 million player option for 2026.

According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, Bieber turned down contract offers from other teams worth more money because he wanted to return to the Guardians.

Bieber, 29, didn't have a vintage season in 2023. The 2020 Cy Young award-winner and two-time All-Star was 6-6 on the year with a 3.80 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 107 strikeouts in 128 innings (21 starts).

He made just two starts in the 2024 season before requiring Tommy John surgery, ending his campaign almost before it began.

It would not have been a major surprise had Cleveland decided to let him walk in free agency this winter. The Guardians are loaded with talented young pitchers that have both made their way to the big leagues (Gavin Williams, Tanner Bibee, Logan Allen, Joey Cantillo) and those expected to at some point (Daniel Espino). In the big picture, clearing the way for the next generation of starters made sense.

The Guardians also aren't prone to offering top-of-the-market contracts or extensions, leading to the departures of former stars like Francisco Lindor, Corey Kluber and Mike Clevinger. Those three were traded, and it's certainly possible that Bieber would have been as well this summer had he stayed healthy, even with the Guardians atop the AL Central.

But despite that history, Bieber is back. The Guardians will be hoping to revitalize his career and return him to the elite status he once held.

MLB Trade Rumors: Guardians 'Open' to Josh Naylor, Lane Thomas Offers amid 2024 FA

The Cleveland Guardians are willing to trade Josh Naylor and Lane Thomas, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

"But it should surprise no one that Cleveland is open to trade offers for first baseman Josh Naylor and outfielder Lane Thomas, both of whom are entering their walk years," Rosenthal wrote on Thursday. "MLB Trade Rumors projects Naylor to earn $12 million in arbitration, Thomas $8.3 million."

Thomas was a postseason hero for the Guardians in 2024, while Naylor only missed 10 regular-season games.

While both players operated in key roles for a team that won 92 games and secured a spot in the American League Championship Series, their murky long-term future in Cleveland could result in the team moving them in exchange for players with more team control.

Thomas was acquired by the Guardians in a July 29 trade with the Washington Nationals, appearing in 53 games with the team through the end of the 2024 season. He hit seven home runs and 23 RBI to go along with a .209/.267/.390 slash line, but his production improved in the postseason.

During Cleveland's five-game victory over the Detroit Tigers in the AL Division Series, Thomas hit two homers and racked up nine RBI while posting a .947 OPS.

As for Naylor, he's coming off the first All-Star selection of his career. The 27-year-old has developed into an important piece of the Guardians' lineup and continued to improve in 2024.

His 31 home runs and 108 RBI both represented career-high marks last season, hitting .243 with a .776 OPS.

The Guardians have an important offseason in front of them and will need to decide between maintaining veteran contributors and prioritizing their future. Cleveland's choices regarding Thomas and Naylor could signify their desired path.

Fresh off winning the American League Central and reaching the ALCS, the Cleveland Guardians are upgrading their uniforms for the 2025 season.

The Guardians showed off their new threads for the upcoming season, which includes a new road alternate jersey featuring the "C" logo on the left side of the chest.

The Guardians' old road alternates were also navy blue, but they featured the city name written across the chest.

Per the club's official release, the new jerseys are designed to inject "energy into the set while honoring the club's 124-year history."

All four jerseys feature a new piping design on the neck and sleeves. The primary white home uniform and gray road uniform will feature a red-blue-red piping color scheme.

Cleveland's alternate red home uniform will have blue-white-blue piping. The alternate road uniform has a red-white-red piping with the navy blue base.

The other significant change will be the hat worn with the home white uniforms. It will switch from navy blue as the primary color with a red bill to primarily red with a blue bill. The blue and red bill cap will still be used with all of the other jerseys.

Cleveland's home white and gray road uniforms will largely remain the same. The only major difference is the Guardians logo on the sleeve will be horizontal instead of at a slant. The Guardians will also continue to use their City Connect jersey for select games in 2025.

Next season will mark the fourth year of the Guardians' nickname. They officially made the switch on Nov. 19, 2021, after a brief legal dispute with a men's roller derby team in Cleveland that also uses the Guardians nickname.

The Guardians have won the AL Central in two of the last three years. They defeated the Detroit Tigers in five games in the ALDS this season to reach their first Championship Series since 2016.

Cleveland lost to the New York Yankees in five games in the ALCS.
