Georgios Samaras Double Helps Celtic Beat Kilmarnock

Sep 21, 2008

Georgios Samaras scored twice as Celtic beat Kilmarnock 3-1 at Rugby Park today.

After a disappointing 0-0 draw midweek with Danish Aalborg in the UCL, Celtic boss Gordon Strachan made three changes, bringing in Mark Wilson, Marc Crosas, and Jan Venegoor of Hesselink.

But there was still no place in the side for Aiden McGeady.

The Ireland international had reportedly fallen out with boss Gordon Strachan after being singled out in the 4-2 defeat to Rangers. Despite Strachan denying any fallout, last season's player of the year for Celtic had to settle for a place on the bench.

After getting off to a fantastic start in the SPL, Kilmarnock were keen to make amends for not beating Celtic in over six years at Rugby Park.

But it seemed highly unlikely that Kilmarnock would make amends as Celtic were quickly on top and had some great opportunities to take the lead early on.

And they should've taken the lead when they won a penalty after Shaun Maloney was fouled by Gary Hay in the penalty area. Maloney dusted himself down to take the penalty, but dragged his shot wide of the left-post.

However, Maloney made amends for his penalty miss on 25 minutes, side-footing past Killie keeper Alan Combe after the ball broke for him just inside the area.

In the second half, Samaras got on the goalsheet with a superb solo effort. After picking up the ball on the half-way line, Samaras set off on 40 yard run, before cutting back inside the box and coolly slotting past Combe to make it 2-0.

The Greek international got his second ten minutes from time, when he slotted home a penalty quite calmly after Craig Bryson was penalised for shoving Shunsuke Nakamura in the box.

However, that wasn't the end of the action, as there was some late drama after Gary Caldwell gave away a penalty for Celtic and was dismissed for handball. Medhi Taouil converted the game's third penalty to give his side a consolation and give some respectability to the scoreline.
