Yamaha team-mates Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo head to this weekend’s British Grand Prix locked on 211 points each at the top of the MotoGP driver standings.

Lorenzo closed the gap to the long-standing leader Rossi with a classy display at Brno last time out. And with five wins under his belt already this season, he will be hopeful of pulling ahead of his team-mate with victory at Silverstone. But the Italian is an experienced competitor and will do his utmost to edge back in front.

Rossi, Lorenzo Deadlocked

The win for Lorenzo at Brno left the title race perfectly poised with seven races remaining. The Spanish star is technically ahead of Rossi due to his five race wins (the Italian has three), but you get the impression there are plenty of twists and turns to come.

Lorenzo was imperious last time out, though. Alongside Rossi and Marquez on the front row, he could have wilted under pressure, but instead, Lorenzo coasted to an easy victory around a demanding circuit in what was arguably his best performance of the season so far.

Here’s a look at the highlights of his virtuoso display, per BT Sport MotoGP:

Rossi is going to have to be at his best to halt Lorenzo’s charge up the standings. The Yamaha man has had his struggles in qualifying this season, and although third place was a much better effort last time out, he got off to a really poor start, as we can see above, which left him battling for the minor podium spots.

Speaking of the buildup to this race, Rossi also admitted that he feels as though Lorenzo may have the edge on him around the legendary Silverstone track, per autosport.com:

Silverstone is difficult. In the past, I've struggled, but last year was a little bit better also. Always Jorge is very strong, from the first year MotoGP raced. …

It's difficult to say because each year is a little bit different. On paper, I think every track Jorge is stronger than me but also [there are some] tracks where we are very equal. I think this is not the way to think, the way to think is to try to understand the way to go faster in Silverstone. This is the way, step by step, weekend by weekend.

Lorenzo has the momentum, which will see him oust Rossi again this weekend. At the moment, he looks the far more comprehensive rider and is showing his quality throughout the entirety of the grand prix, not just on race day. By contrast, the Italian, while his showings in the races have been superb, is doing so in bursts.

So expect another classy performance from Lorenzo and for him to extend his lead atop of the standings. But it won’t be enough to take the race victory.

Marquez the Man to Beat

BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC - AUGUST 16: Marc Marquez of Spain and Repsol Honda Team lifts the front wheel and celebrates the second place at the end of the MotoGP race during the MotoGp of Czech Republic - Race at Brno Circuit on August 16, 2015 in Brno, Czec

Although Lorenzo was a cut above in the Czech Republic, with two wins from the last three races, Honda’s Marquez is still the in-form rider in the field.

The Spaniard has recovered well in recent weeks after a very slow start to the season, which included three retirements in the first seven races. While retaining the world title may be beyond the reigning champion as a result, he’ll still be hungry to win races before the campaign comes to an end.

While retaining his crown looks a long shot, if he can keep getting on the top step of the podium, anything can happen. While Marquez is coming into this weekend 52 points behind, as we can see here courtesy of Box_Repsol, he’s been making up plenty of ground in recent weeks:

It’s a track that Marquez has fared well at during his time in MotoGP, too. In his debut campaign in 2013, he was second to his compatriot Lorenzo, but last year the roles were reversed, as the youngster got the better of the Yamaha man in a thrilling battle.

With the pressure off and memories of his triumph 12 months ago still fresh, expect a confident Marquez to show his quality at Silverstone come race day. Lorenzo and Rossi will provide stiff opposition and are much more experienced around this unique circuit, but the young Spaniard will hold them off and keep his slim title chances alive.

Race Prediction: 1. Marquez, 2. Lorenzo, 3. Rossi

Before the start of the race, Crash.net MotoGP shared the tyre info for the favourites, revealing Rossi would be running on the hard compound:

Expectations were the compound would slow the Italian veteran down early, which was expected to be an issue in Brno as it is known as a track with few options for overtaking.

As if things weren't bad enough, Rossi had a poor start, dropping back to fifth place while Lorenzo and Marquez kept their positions, per MotoGP's official Twitter account. Rossi was forced to battle for position with Andrea Dovizioso, losing valuable times in the opening laps.

Defending world hampion Marquez did well to stick with Lorenzo, who had dominated the race weekend, and Crash.net MotoGP was starting to get a case of deja-vu:

Eugene Laverty suffered a crash in the background, and the Irishman should thank his lucky stars none of the other riders made contact when him when he went down in Turn 1.

At the front of race, Lorenzo looked nearly untouchable, and the Spaniard slowly started to build a lead over the pack. Marquez gave it everything he had to stick with his compatriot, but his positioning on the bike appeared to be slightly off and the gap kept growing, per MotoGP's official Twitter account:

Before long, Lorenzo was the only man consistently ducking under one minute, 57 seconds every lap, pushing his lead to 2.5 seconds. Rossi had jumped into third position but had six seconds worth of empty tarmac ahead of him, and his pace was well below Lorenzo's.

Turn 11 proved itself to be a difficult challenge to handle for the riders, with Cal Crutchlow and Maverick Vinales losing their grip in consecutive laps. Crash.net Moto GP shared this image of Crutchlow sliding:

With the top three seemingly decided, the attention of the fans turned to the battle between Dovizioso, Andrea Iannone and Dani Pedrosa. The latter's performance was made all the more memorable by the fact he was suffering from a foot injury, via MotoGP's official Twitter account:

Iannone eventually did enough to leave his two rivals behind entering the final lap, and the top four finishers all cruised to the finish line. With Marquez staying ahead of Rossi, Lorenzo closed the gap in the standings heading into the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Here are the latest standings, courtesy of MotoGP's official website:

As reported by Crash.net Moto GP's live blog of the race, Rossi told reporters he didn't think his choice of tyres impacted the result: "I don't think it was the tyres. I chose the best tyres for me in practice, not to go faster in the race. My start was bad. I didn't have the rhythm, Marc and Jorge were faster than me."

Rossi and Lorenzo have dominated the first half of the 2015 season, but the Spaniard has looked the more impressive of the two of late. Rossi remains the finest technician and most experienced rider on the grid, but it's hard to bet against Lorenzo at this stage of the campaign.

The Yamaha's have proven their superiority over the Honda engines, with Sunday's race yet another fine example, so Marquez's bid to win his third consecutive world title appears to be coming to an end. The 22-year-old was nearly unbeatable last year, but in 2015; there's simply no answer for Yamaha.

Marc Marquez will be desperate to continue his resurgent form at the Czech Republic Grand Prix this weekend, with the reigning MotoGP world champion seeking his third successive win.

The Repsol Honda star put in a late surge to overhaul Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo in Indianapolis last time out. Now, after a tough start to the season, the two-time MotoGP world champion looks back at full tilt and he’ll be desperate to close the gap to Valentino Rossi at the summit of the standings.

It promises to be another gripping weekend at the Automotodrom Brno, so here are all the key viewing details you need ahead of the race and a look at a couple of riders who will be set on glory when they take to the circuit.

Marc Marquez

Despite participating in MotoGP for just the third season in his already illustrious career, Marquez commands something of an aura when he prowls around corners on his Honda. It was a trait that was on show in earnest in Indianapolis, as he stalked Lorenzo before pulling off a fine move to take the lead with three laps to go.

Here’s a look at the race’s decisive moment, courtesy of BT Sport MotoGP:

Earlier in the season, Marquez may not have had enough to get past the Yamaha. But after some fine-tuning to the bike and some refocusing from the rider, the 22-year-old sensation looks ready to launch a late assault on the world championship standings.

He’s 56 points behind Rossi coming into this race, but there are still seven rounds left in the season for the Spanish star to make up some crucial ground. As we can see here courtesy of Box_Repsol, Marquez has a brilliant record at Brno too:

The man himself has admitted it will be “really difficult” to secure the ultimate prize after the way in which Yamaha dominated the early stages of the season, per motorsport.com. However, he’ll still be the overwhelming favourite heading into the Czech Republic showpiece and will coast to another impressive victory.

All eyes will then turn to the Yamaha duo of Rossi and Lorenzo to see how they fare at this unique racing circuit.

Prediction: Winner

Valentino Rossi

Although Rossi was only able to muster a third-place finish last time out, once again the iconic Italian dazzled on race day after a poor qualifying performance.

The world championship leader was down in eighth on the grid from the start at Indianapolis and although he did a tremendous job to scythe through the field, there’s little doubt that if his qualifying efforts had been better, Rossi would have had this world title all but wrapped up.

As MCN Sport noted during the United States Grand Prix, the legendary rider is doing himself a disservice by not getting in strong grid positions:

The 36-year-old admitted himself that his qualifying displays this season have not been up to scratch and has vowed to make major improvements going forward, per motogp.com:

The problem is the qualifying, we struggle too much in the practice and we arrive with a little bit too much of a delay before finding a good setting. Starting from the third row is always difficult. I started well and I was fast on the first laps so, if I would have been able to start from the second row, I would have been able to stay with Marc and Jorge until the end of the race. We have to work hard on this, starting from Brno.

If it doesn’t improve, the position of privilege at the top of the standings could soon be gone. Lorenzo’s second-place finish in the United States means the gap has been cut down to just nine points in the race for glory and although Rossi has been supremely consistent on race days this season, one slip and his chances could be gone.

Rossi knows what’s needed to triumph at Brno, having won there four times in MotoGP, but the most recent victory came in 2009. He will find it tough to get the better of Marquez, but some more determination in qualifying should see the Italian oust his team-mate and extend his slender lead in the overall standings.

Prediction: Runner-up

Marc Marquez made it back-to-back wins in MotoGP for the first time this season, as the Honda star overcame a stubborn Jorge Lorenzo to win the Indianapolis Grand Prix.

After losing his lead to the Yamaha man on the opening lap, Marquez had to be patient and wait for his opportunity to pass Lorenzo, eventually doing so on Lap 24 of 27. Lorenzo’s Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi rallied from eighth to finish third after a stunning battle with Dani Pedrosa, preserving his lead atop the driver standings.

After showcasing some scintillating pace in qualifying, Marquez was unable to cling on to first position through the first turn, with Lorenzo just edging out the Spaniard. It set the tone for an absorbing battle between the men chasing the world title.

The man leading the standings going into this Indianapolis showpiece was Rossi, and after another mediocre qualifying performance in which he could only finish in eighth, the iconic Italian was going to have to do things the hard way if he was going to extend his lead.

As MCN Sport revealed, the Yamaha rider was showcasing some searing pace on race day:

Once again, he was slowly moving past rivals, giving the American crowd some thrilling action to savour. He’d already got past two riders to move into sixth on the opening stages of the first lap, then capitalised on an error from Bradley Smith to move into fifth. When Rossi moved onto the back of Andrea Iannone, he quickly overtook him to secure fourth.

Rossi was on a roll early on.
Rossi was on a roll early on.

The Italian was rampant, and it was clear he had eyes for a podium spot. Next up was Pedrosa, and after some initial resistance, Rossi pulled off a stunning move on the Spaniard into Turn 2 on Lap 18.

With leaders in sight, the supporters were bewitched by the Italian’s skills, as noted here by Indonesia VR|46 Fans:

But the two men up front were going to be very difficult to catch. Marquez wasn’t putting too much pressure on Lorenzo, but there was an underpinning sense that the Repsol Honda man was merely stalking his prey with a fast finish in mind.

Nonetheless, the reigning world champion nearly made an error that cost him any chance of victory, per the sport’s official Twitter feed:

It was a classic race with plenty going on, and just to make matters even more intriguing, on Lap 20, the rain flag was branded, prompting the pit lanes into preparing bikes for the wet conditions. Perhaps it was a shift in the weather that knocked Rossi out of his rhythm, as Pedrosa crept up on him again.

HOHENSTEIN-ERNSTTHAL, GERMANY - JULY 12: Valentino Rossi of Italy and Movistar Yamaha MotoGP leads Dani Pedrosa of Spain and Repsol Honda Team during the MotoGP race during the MotoGp of Germany - Race at Sachsenring Circuit on July 12, 2015 in Hohenstei

The Spaniard then dashed round the outside of Rossi at Turn 1 with just four laps to go, but on the next circuit, the Yamaha man capitalised on an error from Pedrosa to retake his spot in the top three.

At the front, things were really beginning to heat up, with Marquez applying heavy pressure. The reigning champion set the fastest lap of the race to move to within touching distance of Lorenzo, but to his credit, the Yamaha responded with an even better time. But clearly confident from his win in Germany last time out, Marquez boasted an aura.

With three to go, the Honda man finally got the job done at Turn 1, pulling out of Lorenzo’s slipstream and surging to the front of the pack. As we can see, per BT Sport MotoGP, it was a stunning piece of riding from Marquez:

He was able to extend his lead in the final stages and won by a comfortable margin in the end. Meanwhile, after overtaking Rossi on the penultimate lap of the race, Pedrosa was overtaken by the Italian on the final lap, capping off a stunning battle between the pair.

Marquez loves this circuit, having won five times in succession, per BT Sport MotoGP, and although he lost pole position early on, there was an assurance about his riding and inevitability he would eventually get the job done. After a tough start to the season, the Spaniard looks set to launch a major surge toward top spot.

But Rossi and Lorenzo both showcased in spades why they shouldn’t be written off. The latter was brilliant throughout and did everything he could to best the world champion, while Rossi continues to dazzle on race day. Nonetheless, if the Italian can’t improve his qualifying displays, his nine-point lead will quickly be whittled down by the chasing pack.

The racing capital of the world plays host to MotoGP this Sunday—as the Indianapolis Grand Prix takes place in the United States.

Legendary Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi leads the championship by just 13 points, with Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo on the Italian's tail.

Honda's Marc Marquez is the form rider in the field, having won the previous Grand Prix race in Germany, and he will be hoping another winning success will help bridge the gap to the dominant Yamaha bikes.

Marquez Wants a Hat Trick of Championships

Spanish superstar Marc Marquez is only in his third season of MotoGP—yet the 22-year-old is already a double world champion.

The prodigious talent is now on the charge, and he has Valentino Rossi in his sights. But the current champion has found life more difficult this season and has not flexed the muscle of his previous campaigns.

This season, Marquez's performances have been littered with mistakes, and the experience of Rossi has propelled him to the front of the queue.

Jorge Lorenzo has stuck close to Rossi for most of the championship, and still he still poses the greatest threat to the legendary Italian.

But Marquez is now showing signs of confidence, similar to last season, and he cannot be discounted.

Rossi is chasing his 10th World Championship this term, and he has displayed a resolve most knew he had in his locker. But Marquez has never lost a MotoGP race on American soil, and the leader will be able to feel the Spaniard's breath on his neck, when it seemed he would never get close.

The MotoGP's official Twitter account shared footage of Marquez's return to form in Germany:

However, it is Rossi's consistency that has been the story of the season. Despite not always finding himself near to pole position, he has managed podium finishes in each of the year's nine races, per MotoGP.com.

Second place Lorenzo had a hot streak of four straight wins, but he failed to make the podium in Germany, as Marquez leapfrogged the field.

Andrea Iannone's third spot in the championship race is somewhat a false economy, with the Ducati rider without a win to his name. Like Rossi, he has kept a consistent edge—but now needs to find a clutch of wins.

Marquez will feel he is the favorite going into the race on one of the most famous tracks in motorsports—but the Yamahas, as a team, look unstoppable at times.

Lorenzo has the pace to cause a shock, but all eyes will be on the Doctor, as he battles to keep top billing.

But this shootout could be the most exciting race of the year, with Marquez now looking like the racer of old. His skills are supreme, and he will feel he can make it a hat trick of world championships.

Marc Marquez soared home to win his third consecutive MotoGP German Grand Prix on Sunday, the first time this season he's claimed back-to-back podium finishes after clinching second in Assen last month.

Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi took second and third place, respectively, with the official MotoGP Twitter account confirming Marquez's win, reviving his chances of a title defence:

Marc Marquez was showing all the signs in practice this weekend that he'd be fit to challenge for top spot in Saxony, and after triumphing at this circuit for the last five years, the signs looked good.

The Spaniard claimed victory in each of the last two MotoGP German Grand Prix races, winning two Moto2 meetings in 2012 and 2011, as well as a Moto3 title in 2010.

However, the pressure was turned on with Valentino Rossi striving to make his way into the top three from fourth, and a determined Doctor is a dangerous customer indeed.

Briton Scott Redding encountered some horrible fortune on the very first lap as he crashed out to bring an early end to his afternoon, shortening Honda's chances of clinching the win:

Jorge Lorenzo was of course another ingredient in contention for first place, and the re-emergence of Rossi saw the two Yamahas battle away in their bid for a podium spot.

Rossi initially stuttered in what looked to be a shaky moment or two, but the Italian swiftly re-asserted himself to start breaking lap records and piling pressure on the likes of Marquez out in front:

As suggested by Motorcycle News Sport, the head-to-head between Lorenzo and Rossi promised to peel some of the pressure off Marquez and allow him to open up a cushion as leader:

It looked like the Repsol Honda combatant would be permitted to stride in for his second win of the year, but protecting Yamaha's podium positions will have been seen as an even greater priority for Rossi and Lorenzo.

Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso was another high-profile name to fall out of the reckoning in Saxony after he crashed out in eighth. Thankfully he emerged from the spill unhurt.

Having finished second in the opening three races of the 2015 campaign, the 29-year-old has had to endure a torrid streak of bad fortune lately after failing to finish in three of his last four outings:

Just when it looked as though a leading pack was established, four-time German Grand Prix winner Dani Pedrosa made his surge to take second from Rossi to set up a Repsol Honda one-two at the head.

However, that didn't look likely to shift Marquez out in front, who had been consistently lapping in the one minute and 21 seconds range to defend his cushion.

Rossi wouldn't be rattled so easily and stuck close to Pedrosa despite the change-up in order.

Coming into the final few laps, Rossi was as close as 0.2 seconds from his target, but Crash.net confirmed Pedrosa would open up the gap to just about wrap up second:

Marquez's place atop the pile was assured and Rossi couldn't alter the order so late, leaving the team-mates to seal a one-two triumph not just for Repsol Honda, but for Spain, too.

Considering their deflated form this season, it's a huge result for Marquez and Pedrosa alike, boosting their 2015 prospects, while restricting Rossi and Lorenzo to third and fourth, respectively.

Andrea Iannone will be somewhat disappointed with his fifth-place finish, the first time in three races he's failed to finish among the top four, while Cal Crutchlow, Bradley Smith and Pol Espargaro continue their duel outside the top spots.

Marquez will hope success in Germany can provide a springboard for the rest of the campaign and look to continue his winning streak at Indianapolis next month.

Having held off a late rally from Marc Marquez in Assen to extend his lead atop the driver standings, Valentino Rossi will be well aware that he faces an even tougher challenge if he’s to be top of the podium at the Sachsenring come the end of MotoGP German Grand Prix.

The iconic Italian was almost reeled in by the reigning world champion in the Netherlands last time out, adding another thrilling chapter to what’s been an absorbing season. But besting the Spaniard in Germany, where Marquez has won in all four of his visits in various disciplines, is a major challenge.

Can Rossi make another big step toward what’d be a first world title in six years? Will Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo get back on the winning trail? Or will Marquez, who has endured a difficult start to the season, finally catch fire at his favourite circuit?

Here’s a look at a couple of key drivers ahead of the showpiece, the weekend’s full schedule and where to catch the action via an online stream.

Valentino Rossi

The Yamaha star strode into the Dutch GP with a lead intact in the driver standings, but he was under big pressure from his team-mate Lorenzo, who had won the last four races. Rossi showcased his experience to notch pole position in qualifying before holding things together under pressure late on.

Indeed, as we can see here courtesy of Crash.net MotoGP, the Italian finally hooked things up in qualifying:

It meant he was going to be extraordinarily difficult to beat in the race itself, and for long spells it seemed as though the Yamaha rider would coast to victory at a circuit he relishes. However, we were treated to a sensational finish thanks to some remarkable riding from the reigning world champion.

Rossi did magnificently to cling on to victory.
Rossi did magnificently to cling on to victory.

The tussle between the two men went on for laps and, as we can see here, it came to a thrilling conclusion on the final corner of the race, per BT Sport MotoGP:

In many respects, it was an incident emblematic of these two MotoGP greats. The know-how of Rossi was on show in spades as he clung on against the Spaniard, closing him out and getting to the chequered flag first, and the youthful vibrancy of Marquez, showcasing the enterprising driving style that has made him such a treat to watch.

Buoyed by that victory, expect another strong performance from Rossi this weekend but for him to ultimately lose out on top spot at the Sachsenring.

Prediction: Runner-up

Marc Marquez

Although a man of Marquez’s immense talent and ambition will have probably been disappointed to have only finished second in Assen, for Honda it was encouraging to see the Spaniard back up at the front of the field chasing a race win.

Aside from a win in Round 2 of the 2015 campaign, Marquez has been lacking the spark that has seen him clinch the previous two world titles. Although he has admitted there are still issues to solve with the bike, the 22-year-old is expecting a strong performance this weekend, per MotoGP.com:

We worked well all weekend in Assen and we have found some positive progression with the bike. There are still some things to solve, but we have definitely made a step forward. Sachsenring is a small and twisty little circuit, unlike any others on the calendar.

I’ve enjoyed good results here in the past and I hope this weekend can prove to be a good weekend for us also. The weather can be tricky there so we will have to work hard from the first session.

Indeed, since first racing here in 2010, Marquez has won on every visit to this iconic circuit. But with the Yamaha now unbeaten in the last six races, will the Spaniard’s know-how on board the Honda be enough to usurp their dominance?

As noted here by MotoGP Fan Zone, Marquez has been pretty much perfect at this venue in MotoGP to this point:

The Yamaha will be strong again, and if Rossi can manage to string together back-to-back poles, he’ll be very difficult to edge out. But the Honda made big strides at Assen, and with Marquez aboard, they have the best rider possible to negotiate this circuit.

He may not have enough to land pole position this year, but if Marquez can show composure and assurance comparable to what was on display a fortnight ago, he'll be too strong for the chasing pack.

Valentino Rossi edged out world champion Marc Marquez in a thrilling Dutch Grand Prix in Assen to claim his third victory of the 2015 season. BT Sport MotoGP revealed the winner at the line:

Jorge Lorenzo came into the race as the man to beat, having won the last four grands prix on the spin, but it was Marquez and pole rider Rossi who put together a remarkable tussle for the crown, with the Italian emerging on top.

Rossi had been looking over his shoulder in the World Championship standings after Lorenzo’s spell of good form, but the victory in the Netherlands gives him back some breathing space. Fans’ favourite Lorenzo eventually came home in third, as we see below:

Despite Rossi’s brilliance this season, the Dutch Grand Prix was the first time he’d claimed pole position in a race, and he took full advantage by storming out of the traps.

The Italian just about beat Aleix Espargaro to T1 and looked in imperious form over the opening laps.

However, it wasn’t long before the Assen race started to take shape, with MotoGP’s big three leading the pack—as Crash.net revealed:

Lorenzo eventually dropped off the pace after some stunning riding by Rossi and Marquez, and from then on, it was a two-horse race.

The Spaniard was demonstrating exactly why he’s the world champion, as his wheels barely came out of place in the opening exchanges.

The final sector of the lap was where his brilliance really shone through, too, as he was constantly gaining ground on Rossi toward the line.

Rossi was not to be deterred though, as his positioning was spot on, keeping Marquez away from first place. That was, until the 20th lap.

Marquez had been staying tight to Rossi for what seemed like an age before he finally made his move at the first turn, but it was timed to perfection and looked like being enough to earn him the victory.

However, the Italian had other ideas.

Marquez was pushing hard to get clear of Rossi and cement his place at the top, yet Rossi was staying glued to his wheel—per Crash.net:

All the championship leader needed was a good time to strike. He couldn’t do it in the final sector due to Marquez’s brilliance, so he needed to take a chance between laps eight and 12.

And he did so in style by taking a sensational line at T10 with just two laps to go. Marquez tried to hit back immediately, but Rossi just about held on, as BT Sport MotoGP’s video shows:

And if that drama wasn’t enough, the final exchange between the pair was something to behold.

Contact was made in the last corner, which pushed Rossi over the gravel, but he kept his composure to cross the line first—per BT Sport:

It will go down as one of the greatest tussles in MotoGP history, and Rossi was relief personified when the victory was confirmed—well, relief and a touch of immaturity, too, as MotoGP revealed:

The Italian's performance was just stunning, but you’ve got to hand it to Marquez, who pushed him all the way round and could well have won on another day.

The Spanish star didn’t concede defeat immediately, though, as he appeared to call for a disqualification in his post-race interview—via MotoGP:

That much is unlikely, however, as it seemed that Marquez was at fault for the contact, with Rossi being forced to cut across the track just to stay on his bike.

The veteran rider is now 10 points clear of Lorenzo in the World Championship standings, as we see below:

The world champion has looked a little out of sorts in recent weeks, but his performance in Assen will undoubtedly give him plenty of encouragement.

Although, there’s still a certain Mr Rossi for him to get the better of…

Jorge Lorenzo will head to Assen this weekend, chasing a fifth consecutive victory, as the MotoGP roadshow rocks up in the Netherlands.

The Spaniard is now just one point back of overall leader Valentino Rossi, and although he’s won at this iconic circuit on four occasions in his distinguished career, Lorenzo has endured some wretched luck at the Dutch TT since his last victory in 2010.

Can the Yamaha man conquer his Assen demons and overhaul his team-mate atop the world championship standings? Here’s a closer look at the two men most likely to savour glory this weekend and all the key viewing details ahead of the action getting underway.

Although the legendary Italian has only won two races in 2015 compared to Lorenzo’s four, he still leads the way in the drivers' championship. It’s a measure of Rossi’s serene consistency that coming into this weekend, he still possesses a one-point lead despite his team-mate’s own sensational sequence of wins.

In Catalonia, Rossi was made to work extremely hard for his second-place finish. A poor qualifying session meant he began in seventh spot on the grid, but the Italian wove his way back through the field, showcasing plenty of composure as other riders crashed out.

It seems set to be another engrossing battle between the two Yamaha riders again, but as noted here by Indonesia VR|46 Fans, the Italian has an excellent record at the circuit known as “The Cathedral”:

While Rossi does thrive around the legendary track, his skills will be nullified if he continues to flounder in his race preparations.

Indeed, while Lorenzo has been dominant in the last four races, he’s been duly assisted by his team-mate's inability to hook things up in qualifying; the highest Rossi has qualified in any of the last four races is fifth. As noted here, courtesy of BT Sport MotoGP, it’s an issue, which has blighted the Yamaha rider all season:

Provided Rossi can get up to the front of the grid, he has the pace to match Lorenzo around the Assen track. But at the moment it’s tough to rely on his qualifying displays and as such, a second-place finish looks most likely for the Italian, preserving his record of finishing in the top three in every race in 2015.

Prediction: Runner-Up

Jorge Lorenzo

The Yamaha star has been imperious in recent weeks. Last time out in Catalonia, he surged from third position on the grid up to the front of the pack in the first lap and from that point on the race win was never in any doubt.

As we can see here, courtesy of BT Sport MotoGP, Lorenzo has been so dominant as of late:

But he’s been unable to overhaul Rossi at the top of the standings. Doing so in Assen, where Lorenzo is chasing his fifth career win, would be the ideal tonic for the Spaniard, who has had a torrid time of things in the Netherlands in recent years.

ASSEN, NETHERLANDS - JUNE 28: Jorge Lorenzo of Spain and Yamaha Factory Racing returns to paddock after an operation on his collarbone, which he broke during yesterday's free practice session, during the MotoGp Of Holland - Qualifying at TT Circuit Assen

In 2013 his ride bucked during a practice session, and Lorenzo sustained a broken collarbone. But he returned to compete in the grand prix just one day after surgery, and despite being in obvious pain, he was still able to finish in fifth position. Last year, after such a harrowing experience 12 months prior, he could only finish in a lowly 13th spot.

Lorenzo should be confident, however. As noted here by official MotoGP statistician Martin Raines, the Yamaha has been dominant as of late:

If he can conquer the mental hurdles that are naturally in situ, Lorenzo should win here. The Spaniard has been the class of the field in recent weeks and looks to be on a relentless march to the peak of the driver standings.

It’s a crucial weekend for the Yamaha man, and if he can take the chequered flag here, Lorenzo should have the momentum to go on and seize the world title.

Jorge Lorenzo won his fourth consecutive race of the 2015 MotoGP season, beating team-mate Valentino Rossi at the Catalunya Grand Prix to strengthen Yamaha's lead at the top of the standings.

Crash.net MotoGP shared this shot of the finish:

Defending world champion Marc Marquez suffered another early crash that saw him unable to finish the race, yet another setback in what has been a disappointing season. Andrea Dovizioso suffered the same fate, to the delight of Lorenzo and Rossi, who now look destined to go head-to-head for the world title.

The results from Sunday's race.

Lorenzo had a fantastic start, jumping to the top of the pack to lead in Lap 1, while Marquez did well to move up the grid and keep up with his compatriot. In the background, Cal Crutchlow crashed in Turn 4, ending his chances of getting a result, per MotoGP's official Twitter account:

Marquez easily kept pace with Lorenzo and cruised past Dovizioso, but he too got a little too familiar with the Catalan asphalt, per Crash.net MotoGP:

The reigning world champion isn't having the best of seasons, and Sunday's tumble marked the second time in a row he crashed out of the race.

The Spaniard made no excuses for his crash:

It opened the door for veteran Rossi to move up in the race, slotting into second place behind an unleashed Lorenzo. The Spaniard was significantly faster than his opponents in the first few laps, opening up a wide gap with the pack.

Behind him, the hot conditions had a devastating impact, with several more riders suffering crashes. Pol Espargaro suffered a slide in Turn 3, before Dovizioso lost the front of his bike chasing Rossi.

The Italian was able to get his bike back on track, but he was forced to return to the pits:

Once the dust had settled, the remaining riders actually had the chance to do some racing. Lorenzo's pace was impressive, quickly opening up a two-second gap over Rossi, and the rest of the top 10 started spreading as well.

But at the midway point of the race, Rossi started to nibble at the lead, and suddenly, Lorenzo's lap times started dropping as well. Crash.net MotoGP wondered whether the race leader had rolled the throttle:

The Italian closed the gap to 1.3 seconds before Lorenzo started finding his rhythm again, matching the veteran's lap times and preserving the lead.

In the background, Aleix Espargaro crashed out of fourth place just as the battle between Maverick Vinales and Scott Redding started heating up, via MotoGP:

It was a tough end to the race for Espargaro after impressing in during qualification, but he never managed to keep pace with the top two and was unlikely to feature on the podium, either.

With four laps to go, Rossi could almost smell team-mate Lorenzo, but just as the fans started getting ready for an epic final battle, the latter opened up the throttle and pushed the lead over a second again. As it turned out, he was saving his tyres, while Rossi had to battle to close the gap, allowing the Spaniard to cruise to the finish in the final laps.

Yamaha are the big winners of the race weekend, and with four consecutive wins, it's clear Lorenzo is the man in form. The two-time world champion is simply unstoppable at the moment, and Rossi had no problems acknowledging that after the race:

The veteran Italian should never be overlooked, but as things stand, it's hard to envision a scenario in which Lorenzo doesn't win the world title. Marquez should bounce back with a strong second half of the season, but he's miles behind his compatriot in the standings and will need more than just a little luck to bridge the gap.

Lorenzo will attempt to win his fifth consecutive race at the GP in Assen, the Netherlands, in two weeks.
