Jets' C.J. Mosley Defends Aaron Rodgers amid Rumored Exit: He Did Some Great Things

With Aaron Rodgers' tenure on the New York Jets reportedly coming to a close, linebacker C.J. Mosley reflected on the quarterback's time with the team.

"We tried to do something special," Mosley said on Fox 5 New York (h/t Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk). "Injuries took part in that, took away a lot of time. He did do some great things this year, getting his 500th touchdown. He was a leader no matter what when he came into the locker room, when he was with us this year. Nothing but respect for him to come back from the Achilles, 40-plus years old."

"I know the wins and losses can get in the way of a lot of things that you can accomplish, but there's no reason for him to leave New York with his head down 'cause I know he gave us his all," he added.

Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reported Sunday that Rodgers flew to New Jersey to meet with the Jets and was told that they were moving on from him. Glazer noted that "all signs" point towards the veteran quarterback playing in 2025, but it won't be for the same team that he spent the 2024 season with.

Expectations were high when New York acquired the four-time MVP in a 2023 trade with the Green Bay Packers, but his first season following the change of scenery ended abruptly.

Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles on the opening drive of the regular season, immediately putting an end to his 2023 campaign.

He recovered in time for the start of the 2024 season, suiting up in all 17 games. New York struggled though, finishing with a record of just 5-12 and missing the playoffs for the 14th consecutive season.

Rodgers put together an efficient year, even if he didn't look as sharp in the pocket compared to his days in Green Bay. He completed 63 percent of his throws for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions.

The 41-year-old reached 500 career touchdown passes in Week 18, becoming the fifth quarterback in NFL history to do so.

While the pairing between Rodgers and the Jets ultimately didn't work out, Mosley looked back on the signal-caller's time with the organization fondly.

NFL Exec Defends Aaron Rodgers: Mentally, and Arm-Talent-Wise, He Was Still High-End

Aaron Rodgers still has at least one believer in the NFL.

"I thought mentally, and arm-talent-wise, he was still high-end," an executive told Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated on Sunday. "The two tackles weren't very good, so any time he had to move in the pocket, he struggled. Not sure if that gets better in Year 2 after the injury or worse with age. [But] the Jacksonville game in particular he made some impressive decisions and throws."

The update comes after Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported Sunday the New York Jets informed the veteran quarterback they do not plan on bringing him back in 2025.

That isn't particularly surprising, as the 41-year-old was just 31st in the league in QBR during the 2024 campaign, per Pro Football Reference, while going 5-12 as a starter. Despite the comments from the executive, he was nowhere near as effective as he was during his peak on the Green Bay Packers.

Yet it was also the first year back from an Achilles injury that cost him all but his first few snaps during the 2023 campaign.

Rodgers was surely adjusting to his return to the field, and some of his best games came later in the campaign. He threw for four touchdowns in the final regular-season game against the Miami Dolphins after he threw for 289 yards and three scores in Week 15 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The executive specifically highlighted the Jaguars games with the comments.

Other teams will have to decide whether they expect Rodgers to get better as he is further removed from the Achilles injury or worse as he gets older.

Breer guessed the Jets will ultimately release him and give him "the freedom to choose his destination" since other teams may not want to assume the $37.5 million he is owed in 2025 ($2.5 million in base salary and $35 million option bonus).

And that will set the stage for New York to reset the franchise with a new quarterback, head coach and general manager for the 2025 campaign.

New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams expressed some displeasure on Sunday.

The 27-year-old took to social media Sunday afternoon to post a thumbs down symbol. This post comes after Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported that the team told Aaron Rodgers that it will be moving on from the quarterback in 2025.

The Rodgers news comes as the future of wide receiver Davante Adams is reportedly uncertain. New York went 5-12 in 2024 and missed the postseason for the 14th consecutive season.

How Aaron Rodgers' Contract Impacts Jets' Salary Cap in Potential Release, Retirement

Feb 9, 2025

As the New York Jets prepare for the post-Aaron Rodgers era, managing the cap fallout from his departure will be the first obstacle to overcome.

Rich Cimini of ESPN reported that New York will inherit $49 million in "dead" money but will likely spread this across 2025 and 2026. This would mean that New York would have $14 million in "dead cap" in 2025 and that number would escalate to $35 million in 2026.

"The Jets are left with $49 million in "dead" money, which can be spread over two years if he's designated a post-June 1 cut," Cimini wrote. "In that case, they would absorb a $14 million charge in 2025, realizing a net savings of $9.5 million in '25. There would be a $35 million charge in 2026."

If Rodgers is to retire instead of being released, Cimini reported that the "same accounting applies."

Rodgers spent 2023 and 2024 with the Jets although he only played four offensive snaps in 2023 before suffering a torn Achilles. He returned in full in 2024 and threw for 3,897 yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Despite this solid production, New York went 5-12 and missed the postseason for the 14th consecutive season. While the team could have elected to run it back with Rodgers in 2025, they will instead take on the cap penalties in the present and move on as a franchise.

New York has $20.9 million in cap space heading into free agency, per Over The Cap, and holds the No. 7 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The current quarterbacks on the roster beyond Rodgers are Tyrod Taylor, Jordan Travis and Adrian Martinez.

Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams Landing Spots Discussed by NFL Fans amid Jets Rumors

Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams' shared tenure with the New York Jets is reportedly coming to an end.

According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, Rodgers met with the Jets "last week" to discuss his future with New York and was told that the team was "moving on from him." The veteran quarterback is expected to keep playing in 2025, but not for the Jets.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport also said "don't be surprised" if New York chooses to move on from Adams, noting that he could reunite with Rodgers elsewhere.

Rapoport noted that the wideout "would like to be on the West Coast."

With the former Green Bay Packers teammates seemingly heading towards their exit from the Jets, fans brought up potential future destinations.

While the Jets finished with a mere 5-12 record during the 2024 season, both players showed that they can still be effective contributors.

Rodgers may not be at the same level compared to his four-time MVP days with the Packers, but he still completed 63 percent of his throws for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions.

Adams also stepped up following a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders to the Jets on Oct. 15. He averaged 77.6 receiving yards per game and caught seven touchdown passes throughout 11 starts in New York.

With both players expected to be searching for a change of scenery, fans had a variety of opinions when deciding where they should go.

Davante Adams Rumors: 'Don't Be Surprised If' Jets Move on from WR with Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers might not be the only veteran the New York Jets move on from this offseason.

After Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported Sunday that New York told Rodgers it was parting ways with him this offseason, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said "don't be surprised" if the Jets also split with wide receiver Davante Adams.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz added that Adams "was primarily there because of Rodgers" and "may want out as well" since his contract will likely need to be adjusted if he did remain with the AFC East team.

The idea that New York will move on from Adams is nothing new.

Rapoport reported Thursday that new Jets general manager Darren Mougey and new head coach Aaron Glenn hadn't yet been in contact with the veteran receiver. What's more, he explained the team would likely have to "massage the cap number" by automatically converting it if Adams did stay.

That is because "they are not going to carry a $36-million cap number for a 30-something receiver."

Adams is set to make $35.6 million in base salary in 2025 and again in 2026, which is a significant amount of money for a 32-year-old receiver who did not inspire the turnaround during the 2024 season the front office was surely hoping for when it acquired him via trade from the Las Vegas Raiders during the 2024 campaign.

Adams likely isn't looking for any type of rebuild at this point of his career either, and the Jets could be looking at something of a short-term reshuffling with a new regime taking over for the 2025 season.

That also means another team could have the opportunity to add one of the best receivers of his generation this offseason.

Adams is a six-time Pro Bowler and three-time First-Team All-Pro selection with six seasons of more than 1,000 receiving yards on his resume. He also led the league with 18 touchdown catches in 2020 and 14 touchdown catches in 2022 when he was with the Green Bay Packers and then the Raiders.

He was still productive in 2024 with 1,063 receiving yards and eight touchdown catches and could reshape the receiver room for a contender this offseason.

Glazer: Jets Told Aaron Rodgers They're 'Moving on from Him' in Meeting Last Week

It would appear that the New York Jets are parting ways with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, "Rodgers flew back to New Jersey last week to meet with the Jets about his future with the team, only to be told that the team was moving on from him. If that means that he will be a June 1 designation that allows him to sign with any team in the league on March 12 if he decides to continue to play. Given that Rodgers made the effort to fly back to discuss his future, all signs point to him continuing to play. It just won't be for the Jets."

Tyreek Hill Rumors: Dolphins 'Do Not Plan to Trade' WR After Apology

Bygones appear to be bygones for the Miami Dolphins and wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Sunday that the Dolphins "do not plan to trade" Hill this offseason (three-minute mark).

"It's early, it's always possible somebody makes the type of offer they can't refuse, but it sounds like right now everything is tracking toward the Cheetah staying in South Beach," he added.

While Hill is signed through the 2026 season, his future with Miami quickly became a topic after the season-ending loss to the New York Jets when he told reporters (2:25 mark), "I'm out. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day, I gotta do what's best for my career, because I'm too much of a competitor to be just out there."

However, the tone was quite different this week during multiple media appearances ahead of the Super Bowl when Hill apologized to his teammates for the comments and said he took "full accountability" for his actions:

Both head coach Mike McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier previously said they met with Hill as well, which seemed to clear the path for him to stay with the Dolphins.

That is welcome news to Miami's chances at being competitive in 2025, as the eight-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro First-Team selection is not that far removed from his dominant 2023 season that saw him lead the league in both receiving yards (1,799) and touchdown catches (13).

His 2024 campaign wasn't as effective with 959 receiving yards and six touchdown catches, but quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was also limited to 11 games after playing all 17 in 2023.

Perhaps they can both remain healthy and lead the Dolphins to the playoffs in 2025.

Schefter: NFL Insiders Say 'Signs Point to' Aaron Rodgers Leaving Jets amid Rumors

Feb 9, 2025

Aaron Rodgers' tenure with the New York Jets may only last two seasons.

ESPN's Adam Schefter (1:25 mark) discussed the situation Sunday and said there are people around the NFL who believe the "signs point to" the veteran quarterback and AFC East team going their separate ways this offseason.

Rodgers may not be the only veteran leaving the Jets this offseason.

On Friday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said, "my understanding is the Jets have not been in contact with Davante Adams since the new general manager, Darren Mougey, and since the new head coach, Aaron Glenn, came in and took over."

That New York may want to move on from the 32-year-old Adams doesn't come as much of a surprise, as he is set to make $35.6 million in base salary in 2025 and again in 2026. That likely isn't the way the Mougey and Glenn want to utilize the team's resources as they begin their tenure, especially since Adams didn't lead to the hoped turnaround after the Jets landed him via trade.

Rodgers and Adams could be linked together seeing how they are friends and previously played together with the Green Bay Packers as well.

One of them heading elsewhere could motivate the other to also look for an exit plan even if the Jets would potentially be interested in a different solution.

Rodgers is 41 years old, so retirement could be an option. But he also has just one more season on his current contract and could look to play it out before he eventually hangs up his cleats and turns his attention toward his eventual Hall of Fame induction in Canton, Ohio.

From New York's perspective, getting out of the Rodgers business as it starts a new era with a new general manager and head coach might be enticing.

After all, the veteran quarterback generates plenty of headlines and attention and didn't look like the same quarterback who was so dominant in his peak with the Packers. In fact, he was 31st in the league in QBR during the 2024 campaign, per Pro Football Reference, and went just 5-12 as a starter in his first year back after the Achilles injury that ended his 2023 season in the first game.

It seems like the Jets might be ready to move on at the quarterback position, which could put a new signal-caller on the same timeline as the coach and G.M.
