Jets Rumors: Commanders DC Joe Whitt Jr. Requested for HC Interview Amid Playoff Run

The New York Jets requested to interview defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. as part of their coaching search, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Whitt is in his first year as Washington's defensive coordinator. During the regular season, the Commanders ranked 13th in total defense (327.9 yards) and 18th in opponent scoring (23.0 points).
Both of those numbers are significant improvements from 2023, when Washington was last in both yards and points allowed.
The Washington Post's Nicki Jhabvala profiled Whitt in November and detailed how he helped to make such an immediate impact on the defense.
The 46-year-old not only understands the game on a schematic level but also knows how to communicate his ideas to the players.
"The thing that's made it such a smooth transition is the way the coaches have simplified the game for me," rookie cornerback Mike Sainristil said to Jhabvala. "They do a great job of teaching me not just the playbook but what I'm looking at when I'm on the field, what formations I'm getting, what types of concepts I can expect out of certain formations."
Veteran edge-rusher Dante Fowler Jr. added that Whitt is "just going to throw it out" if there's a certain idea he wants to implement but can't get the players to fully understand.
When hiring a new head coach, teams often target the opposite of what they had with their last coach.
Robert Saleh specialized in defense and was a defensive coordinator for four seasons before he joined New York in 2021. It stands to reason the Jets would prefer somebody with an offensive pedigree, especially when considering the fact they could have a new starting quarterback in 2025.
Whitt is also an unknown quantity for a lot of fans since this is the first time he has interviewed for a head coaching gig.
But the Commanders' defensive turnaround makes him a compelling candidate.
Video: Bill Belichick Says Mike Vrabel 'Will Do a Great Job' as Patriots HC
Jan 13, 2025
FOXBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS - JANUARY 04: Head coach Mike Vrabel of the Tennessee Titans is congratulated by head coach Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots after their 20-13 win in the AFC Wild Card Playoff game at Gillette Stadium on January 04, 2020 in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Bill Belichick expects Mike Vrabel to succeed with the New England Patriots.
The legendary former Pats' coach and current head honcho for North Carolina appeared on The Pat McAfee Show Monday and spoke about Vrabel's appointment as the head coach in Foxboro:
I think Mike's done a great job, certainly his entry into coaching was no surprise to any of us that knew him and coached him in New England. I talked to him when he was at Ohio State and then when he went to the Houston Texans and then of course at Tennessee when we practiced against him. I stayed in pretty close contact with Mike, so I have a ton of respect for Mike. I think he does a great job. He prepares his team well. They're very good in situational football. They're tough, they're competitive, they're smart, just like he was as a player. I think the teams that he's coached and the positions he's coached followed very much in his playing style and his preparation style. So, I love Mike, I love everything that he stands for as a football coach and I have a lot of respect for him. I'm sure he'll do a great job.
As a player, Vrabel won three Super Bowls with the Patriots under Belichick between the 2001-08 seasons. He was both a Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro selection in 2007 and was elected to the team's Hall of Fame after his playing career.
The 49-year-old began his coaching career with the Ohio State Buckeyes, first as a linebackers coach in 2011 and later as the defensive line coach (2012-13). He then went on to serve as the linebackers coach (2014-16) and defensive coordinator (2017) for the Houston Texans.
As the head coach in Tennessee between 2018-23 he went 54-45, leading the Titans to three playoff appearances. He then spent 2024 as a consultant for the Cleveland Browns.
Vrabel was considered one of the top coaching candidates available this winter, but once the Patriots made the decision to fire Jerod Mayo after just one season, it was easy enough to connect the dots regarding a potential reunion.
He'll have a pretty big rebuild on his hands, as the Patriots have a major talent deficiency across the roster. But he has a promising young quarterback in Drake Maye and the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft to work with, which are positive building blocks for the future.
"There's a shared organizational vision for what we want to do and how we want to work and how we want to acquire players," Vrabel told reporters on Monday at his introductory press conference. "I'm just excited to sit down with [vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf] and his staff."
As for the traits he wants in his players: "Put the team first, know what to do, and be fast and aggressive."
Patriots' Mike Vrabel Says He's Not Bill Belichick: 'I'm Not Anybody But Me'

Head coach Mike Vrabel isn't interested in comparisons between himself and New England Patriots legend Bill Belichick.
"I'm not Bill (Belichick)," Vrabel said at his introductory press conference on Monday, via Mark Daniels of MassLive. "I'm not Bill Cowher. I'm not anyone but me."
"We just want to be good enough to take advantage of bad football," he added. "That's where we're going to start."
Vrabel was hired by the Patriots on Sunday, previously spending eight years on the team as a linebacker during his playing days.
"There are things that are interesting and important," Vrabel said, per The Athletic's Chad Graff. "I think me having played for Bill is interesting -- I just don't know that it's important."
The 49-year-old served as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans from 2018-23, finishing with a 54-45 record. The Titans made the playoffs three times throughout his tenure, advancing to the AFC Championship Game during the 2019 season.
Vrabel was fired at the end of a 2023 campaign that saw Tennessee finish with a 6-11 record, but the team wrapped up a 3-14 season in its first year under new head coach Brian Callahan in 2024.
When asked about the type of offense he's looking to run in New England, Vrabel told reporters on Monday that he wants the team to play "aggressive but not reckless" and it'll be based on "what the players can understand and can handle" (via Mike Giardi of the Boston Sports Journal).
He also provided some insight into his approach with quarterback Drake Maye, who showed promise throughout his rookie season.
"Drake is gonna be his own person, but I'm gonna give him some things that I feel like are necessary to help us to win football games," Vrabel told the media. "We have to be a very efficient passing football team."
The former Titans' coach gave his thoughts on establishing a winning culture as well.
"One thing I've realized about culture is that you can find out what your culture looks like when your family, your business or your team is at its low point," Vrabel said.
He also revealed his focus on "removing entitlement" from the Patriots' current squad and explained that "we're gonna earn the right to be here every single day," per SI.com's Mike Kadlick.
With identical 4-13 records in 2023 and 2024, New England will be expected to show improvement in its inaugural year under Vrabel.
As he prepares to navigate through his first offseason in the new role, he's brushing aside comparisons to Belichick and focusing on bringing his own perspective to the position.

A fan posted a video of Tennessee Titans star pass-rusher Jeffery Simmons liking a social media post that brought up a trade to the New England Patriots on Monday.
The Patriots hired Vrabel as their new head coach on Sunday.
Vrabel previously served as head coach of the Titans from 2018-23, coinciding with Simmons' first five years with the team.
With new head coach Brian Callahan in 2024, Tennessee ended the year with a 3-14 record.
Simmons has expressed his support for Vrabel in the past, discussing their relationship in February 2024 after the coach was let go.
"We had a great relationship, and we still have a great relationship," Simmons said, per Jim Wyatt of the team's official website. "We communicate still. You hate to see it. You hate to see it happen. But things happen in this business, and like he said when we talked about it, it's going to be good. I wished him the best."
The Titans' current desire to discuss moving the 27-year-old is unknown, but they reportedly weren't interested in trading him during the season.
Simmons signed a four-year, $94 million extension with Tennessee in April 2023. He's under contract through the 2027 season and will have a $28.3 million cap hit during the last year of his deal, via Spotrac.
The 2019 first-round pick made consecutive Pro Bowl appearances in 2021 and 2022, but his individual production has steadily declined since. Simmons racked up 76 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 15 pressures, five sacks and two forced fumbles during his 2024 campaign.
Vrabel's team potentially acquiring Simmons in a blockbuster trade is risky, but a change of scenery could help him get back on track. The Patriots are expected to address their defensive line after their 28 sacks were the fewest among all teams in 2024.
Simmons seems to be interested in a reunion with his former coach as well.
Josh Allen Explains Viral Video of Bench Conversation with Ref During Broncos-Bills

It's not very often NFL fans see an official on one of the team's sidelines talking to a star quarterback in the middle of a game, but that is exactly what happened during the third quarter of Sunday's postseason battle between the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos.
The CBS broadcast captured Bill Vinovich talking with Josh Allen on Buffalo's bench after the quarterback was upset there wasn't a defensive holding called in the end zone on a drive that stalled in a field goal.
As Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network relayed, Allen explained after the game that Vinovich was just attempting to calm him down:
Josh Allen on this scene said he was yelling a lot that a penalty shouldâve been called & ref came over to tell him to calm it down. https://t.co/AO5LUNk0QL
Fortunately for Allen and the Bills, the missed call didn't impact the outcome.
Buffalo fell behind 7-0 in the opening minutes but rolled to a 31-7 victory by scoring the next 31 points. Allen was unstoppable in the second half and finished 20-of-26 passing for 272 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions.
It wasn't a one man show, though, as James Cook set the tone in the first half and finished the game with 120 yards and one touchdown on the ground.
Next up is a Divisional round clash against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens in a matchup between two of the top MVP candidates.
Every call might mean more in that game since it is expected to be close, although Allen may think twice about complaining too loudly after one of the officials had to talk with him Sunday.
Bills HC: Lamar Jackson vs. Josh Allen is 'What Everybody's Been Waiting For'
Jan 12, 2025

The Buffalo Bills trounced the Denver Broncos in the wild-card round on Sunday, setting up an exciting matchup between two MVP candidates in Josh Allen and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Ahead of the divisional round game, Bills coach Sean McDermott called the matchup between Allen and Jackson something that "everybody's been waiting for," per GoLongTD.com's Tyler Dunne.
Allen had high praise for Jackson when asked about the contest.
"They got after us earlier this year, so we've got a lot of film to watch," he said. "It's a great team, it's a great quarterback, obviously, with Lamar, what he's able to do. He's one of the most dynamic, if not the most dynamic quarterback in the league. He's so fun to watch, but I'll be watching their defense this week. That's our focus."
Despite the Bills and Ravens being perennial contenders since Allen and Jackson entered the league in 2018, the two star quarterbacks have only faced off in the playoffs one time. Buffalo beat Baltimore in 2020 in the divisional round before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship.
Since that meeting, Allen and Jackson have only improved their respective games.
Allen threw for 3,731 yards, 28 touchdowns and just six interceptions this year while adding 531 rushing yards and 12 scores on the ground to help the Bills finish 13-4. Jackson has had a career season with 4,172 passing yards, 41 touchdowns and four interceptions to go with his 915 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
On Saturday, Jackson led the Ravens past the Pittsburgh Steelers behind 175 passing yards, two touchdowns and 81 rushing yards. Allen had 272 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Bills' 31-7 win over Denver on Sunday.
As good as Buffalo was this season, it was no match for Baltimore in September when the Ravens won 35-10. Allen and the Bills will look to learn from their mistakes in the matchup and produce a different outcome this time around.
While Allen and Jackson have both had tremendous success over the course of their careers, both are still chasing their first Super Bowl. One of the MVP favorites will get a step closer to winning a championship next week in the divisional round.
Bills' Playoff Win vs. Broncos Has NFL Fans Excited for Josh Allen vs. Lamar, Ravens

Josh Allen vs. Lamar Jackson. Two of the biggest protagonists of the 2024 season now stand in each other's way with Super Bowl aspirations on the line, and the coming showdown should be pure cinema.
The Buffalo Bills quarterback ensured his team would get another shot at the Baltimore Ravens this season, throwing for 272 yards and two scores while rushing for 46 yards in Sunday's 31-7 win over the Denver Broncos.
That sets up a Divisional Round matchup between Allen and Jackson, the two favorites for this year's MVP award. It will be just the second time the two men have faced off in the playoffs, with Buffalo beating Baltimore in the Divisional Round back in 2020 by a 17-3 margin. This season, the Ravens beat the Bills 35-10 in Week 4, adding another spicy storyline to an already sizzling matchup.
So yes, NFL fans are prepping the popcorn:
Josh Allen took Lamarâs record of 602 YDS from last nightâs game đ
Bills vs. Ravens next weekend in Orchard Park. Lamar vs. Josh. Forget MVP debates. Itâs settled on the field. Canât wait. pic.twitter.com/DwoeF753Fr
Lamar Jackson vs Josh Allen matchup is must-see TV. I for sure think Lamar's supporting cast is better but you can never count out Josh Superman Allen.
The hype for next week is real. The much-anticipated matchup will come to fruition because Allen was awesome on Sunday, which has been par for the course this season.
What better way to explain the unicorn that is Josh Allen: heâs tied for the most rushing TDs in @BuffaloBills franchise history as a QB, and he just passed Jin Kelly for the most post season passing TDs in Bills history. pic.twitter.com/9EbIak76lD
It remains to be seen if Allen will win MVP after throwing for 3,731 yards, 28 touchdowns and six interceptions during the regular season, completing 63.6 percent of his passes while also rushing for 531 yards and 12 touchdowns. The fact that Jackson was voted first-team All-Pro at quarterback, not Allen, is an indication of how the MVP votingâwhich already concludedâwill likely play out.
But if Allen and the Bills beat the Ravens next week and keep their Super Bowl hopes alive, it's hard to imagine the MVP will be of much concern in Buffalo. The ultimate goal is a title, and getting through Jackson and the Ravens would fuel the Allen stans for the foreseeable future.
That storyline aside, it should be a fun matchup on its own merits, with two of the more explosive offensesâand two defenses that have been prone to getting gashed against good teamsâfacing off. The expectation is that the winner will face Patrick Mahomes and the inevitable Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.
The stage is set for quite the final act to the NFL season, in other words. Audiences, in particular, have been eagerly anticipating the Allen vs. Jackson showdown scene.
NFL Wild Card Weekend ended with a slate of four more exciting games.
The AFC East-champion Buffalo Bills opened the day by defeating the Denver Broncos and were followed by a pair of NFC matchups featuring the Philadelphia Eagles outlasting the Green Bay Packers in the matinee and the Washington Commanders upsetting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the nightcap.
The Wild Card Round concluded with the Los Angeles Rams dominating the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night.

Bills 31, Broncos 7
The Bills rode Josh Allen to their fifth straight wild-card round victory, as the presumptive frontrunner for the 2024 NFL MVP award put on a scintillating performance while becoming the franchise's all-time leader in passing touchdowns.
Allen threw for 272 yards, two scores and no interceptions on 20-of-26 passing to spearhead the victory. He also added 46 rushing yards on eight carries.
JOSH ALLEN WHAT A THROW FOR THE TD ON 4TH & 1 đ±đ„
In addition to Allen's strong outing, Bills running back James Cook racked up 120 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. Buffalo totaled 200 yards on the ground and dominated the time of possession.
Despite Allen's perennial brilliance, the Bills have not advanced past the Division Round of the playoffs since 2020. Buffalo will be facing another tough test this year when it meets the Baltimore Ravens, so Allen will need to be at his absolute best if he hopes to keep up with reigning two-time MVP Lamar Jackson.
Eagles 22, Packers 10
It wasn't easy, but the Eagles emerged victorious over the Packers in a chippy battle at Lincoln Financial Field. The two teams combined for 15 penalties, eight by Green Bay, but Philadelphia managed to overcome the sloppy performance to reach the Divisional Round for the second time in the last three years.
The Eagles took advantage of an early mistake from the Packers as Keisean Nixon fumbled the opening kickoff, leading to an 11-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Hurts to Jahan Dotson.

After the early lead, Philadelphia's No. 1-ranked defense showed up in a big way and pitched a shutout in the first half. The Eagles picked off two passes from Packers quarterback Jordan Love in the second quarter and had another interception in the fourth quarter to seal the game.
JORDAN LOVE THROWS HIS 2ND INT OF THE FIRST HALF đŹ
Hurts added a 24-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Goedert in the third quarter to provide some breathing room. Green Bay made it a one-possession game with a one-yard touchdown run by Josh Jacobs early in the fourth quarter, but Philadelphia pulled away with a pair of field goals by Jake Elliott and a strong finish by the defense.
Hurts finished with 131 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions as well as 36 rushing yards. Star running back Saquon Barkley rushed for 119 yards on 25 carries in his playoff debut for the Eagles.
Commanders 23, Buccaneers 20
In arguably the most exciting game of the wild card weekend, the Commanders doinked their way into the Divisional Round with a game-winning field goal by Zane Gonzalez to take down the Buccaneers. It's Washington's first playoff victory since 2005.
COMMANDERS DOINK THE FG TO WIN A PLAYOFF GAME đ±
The Commanders are the first road team to earn a win this weekend, and they did so with a rookie quarterback leading the way.
Jayden Daniels went toe-to-toe with Bucs veteran signal-caller Baker Mayfield and rose to the occasion, throwing for 268 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions while adding a team-high 36 rushing yards in the win. His touchdown pass to star receiver Terry McLaurin after veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner recovered a fumble by Mayfield early in the fourth quarter gave Washington a 20-17 lead.
After the Bucs tied the game with a field goal, Daniels marched the Commanders down the field for the game-winner. While Gonzalez's kick wasn't pretty, the ball went through the uprights for Washington.
The Commanders' win earns them a date with the No. 1 seed in the NFC, the Detroit Lions. It can already be expected that Daniels will be ready to deliver on the big stage once again, so fans should surely be excited about next week's matchup.
Rams 27, Vikings 9
Despite having their home game moved to a neutral site at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, due to ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles, the Rams overcame a tumultuous week with a dominant win over the Vikings.
The Rams tied an NFL playoff record by sacking Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold nine times. On back-to-back Minnesota possessions in the second quarter, Los Angeles recorded an interception and then forced a fumble by Darnold that rookie edge rusher Jared Verse returned for a 57-yard touchdown.
With the defense making a statement, the Rams offense had an easy day. Veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for 209 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions on 19-of-27 passing. Los Angeles totaled just 90 yards on the ground.
Despite dealing with a difficult situation off the field, the Rams appear motivated to take down whoever is in front of them. With their defense performing at such a high level, they will have a legitimate chance to upset the Eagles in the Divisional Round next week.
NFL Insider: Robert Saleh HC Buzz Shows People in NFL Feel He Was Hampered by Jets

Former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh has generated plenty of interest throughout the current hiring cycle, leading to a belief that he was held back by his old team.
"That he's drawing interest after compiling a 20-36 record shows that people around the league recognize that he was hampered in New York by some tough circumstances," ESPN's Rich Cimini reported on Sunday.
Saleh was fired by the Jets after Week 5 of the 2024 season with the team sitting at 2-3. New York wound up losing nine of its next 12 games following the move, ending the year at 5-12 and missing the playoffs for a 14th consecutive season.
Jets have been ELIMINATED from playoff contention for the 14th straight year đł pic.twitter.com/a4rgZcqWnd
Cimini noted that Saleh has head-coaching interviews lined up with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Las Vegas Raiders. He's also met with the San Francisco 49ers regarding the team's defensive coordinator position, a role that he previously held in San Francisco from 2017-20.
The Jets' struggles on defense following Saleh's departure were apparent. New York allowed 17.0 points throughout in its first five games before giving up 26.6 points each week after making the change at head coach.
Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reported on Nov. 18 that Saleh's firing wasn't received well in the Jets' locker room, with players wondering how the move was supposed to immediately help the team.
Despite New York's decision to cut ties with him before the middle of the 2024 season, Saleh shouldn't have an issue finding a new job as his coaching ability is still respected around the league.
NFL Agent Calls out Woody Johnson: Jets Owner 'Can't Make a Good Decision'

As the New York Jets seek to hire a new head coach and general manager this offseason after a dreadful 2024 campaign, there isn't much optimism that team owner Woody Johnson will make the right calls.
"Woody can't make a good decision," a prominent coaching agent told ESPN's Rich Cimini.
The Jets have already interviewed Mike Vrabelâwho has since been hired by the New England PatriotsâRon Rivera, Rex Ryan, Matt Nagy, Brian Flores, Steve Spagnuolo, Vance Joseph, Arthur Smith and Darren Rizzi for their coaching vacancy, and are expected to interview interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich as well (though given his 3-9 record after taking over for Robert Saleh, he feels like the longest of shots).
As for general manager, the team has already interviewed Thomas Dimitroff, Jon Robinson, Jim Nagy, Louis Riddick, Alec Halaby, Mike Borgonzi, Ray Farmer, Mike Greenberg, Darren Mougey, Lance Newmark, Trey Brown, Chris Spielman and Ryan Grigson. The team is clearly casting a wide net in both searches, but there remains major skepticism as to whether Johnson will settle on the best person for the job.
