NHL Rumors: Latest Buzz on Alex Pietrangelo, Blues, Jack Eichel's Future

Jul 9, 2020

Although the NHL free-agency period isn't likely to start until much later than usual, that doesn't change the fact that some top players will be available for teams to sign when it arrives.

With the league hoping to resume the 2019-20 season later in July, free agency won't come until November, assuming everything goes according to plan. That means some players will remain unsure of their futures in the meantime.

One of the stars set to become a free agent this offseason is St. Louis Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, who will surely garner interest should he hit the market. However, the team has extra time to work out a deal with him, making it an interesting situation to watch.

Here's some of the recent buzz from around the NHL, including the latest on Pietrangelo's future in St. Louis.

No Recent Contract Talks for Pietrangelo, Blues

It's possible things are going to get tricky for the St. Louis Blues this offseason as they try to stay under the league's salary cap while also attempting to retain two of their top defensemen.

According to The Athletic's Scott Burnside, the NHL salary cap is going to stay at $81.5 million for the 2020-21 season. As Jeremy Rutherford of the same publication noted, that only leaves about $2 million in cap space for the Blues, who might want to find a way to bring back Pietrangelo and soon-to-be restricted free agent Vince Dunn.

Because the NHL is planning to resume the 2019-20 season later this summer, players' contracts now won't expire until Oct. 31. However, it doesn't appear St. Louis general manager Doug Armstrong has used the recent downtime to begin negotiations with Pietrangelo.

"Despite now having a cap ceiling, there have been no recent conversations between the Blues and Pietrangelo's representatives at Newport Sports Management, according to sources," Rutherford wrote. "Armstrong had said prior to the pause that the club would wait until after the playoffs to negotiate with Pietrangelo, and it's not known whether he's sticking to that plan under the reworked calendar."

Rutherford noted that Pietrangelo and Dunn "could fetch a combined $12 million," so if St. Louis wants to bring back both blueliners, it may be "forced to make some major moves."

While the Blues have several solid defensemen under contract for the near future, such as Justin Faulk, Marco Scandella and Colton Parayko, it would be a big loss if Pietrangelo and/or Dunn don't return, particularly the former.

Pietrangelo, 30, has served as the Blues captain since 2016-17 and spent his entire 12-year NHL career with St. Louis, receiving two All-Star selections and leading the franchise to its first Stanley Cup in 2019.

Will Eichel Want to Stay in Buffalo?

There have been rumors this offseason about whether Buffalo Sabres captain Jack Eichel would be willing to seek a trade. Some of those have stemmed from the center's comments in May, when he said he was "fed up with the losing" and was "frustrated," per ESPN's Greg Wyshynski.

In June, the Sabres made a leadership change, firing general manager Jason Botterill and replacing him with Kevyn Adams. And while it doesn't change the fact that Buffalo has missed the playoffs in nine straight seasons and hasn't won a postseason series since 2007, it is a sign that the franchise is moving in a new direction.

Could that lead to Eichel staying with the Sabres for the long term? NHL.com's Dan Rosen can see one big reason why he wouldn't want to leave.

"Eichel likes coach Ralph Krueger, and that's significant," he wrote. "If he didn't like the coach on top of being frustrated, I could see him being more inclined to ask management to trade him."

Krueger was hired by Buffalo in May 2019. In his first season leading the team, the Sabres went 30-31-8. From 2012 to 2019, they never won more than 35 games in a season, so it's possible they could have reached that mark had they played their final 13 games of the regular season.

Eichel, who was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 draft, has continued to improve through his first five NHL seasons. In 2018-19, he tallied 82 points (28 goals and a career-high 54 assists) in 77 games; this season, he had 78 points, including a career-high 36 goals, in 68 games.

Unless the 23-year-old gets traded, he's set to be in Buffalo for a long time—his contract doesn't expire until the end of the 2025-26 season.

After waiting for most of February to score his 700th career goal, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin reached the milestone Saturday.

The 34-year-old endured a five-game scoreless streak before he struck for No. 699 on Thursday. His 700th tally came in the third period of Washington's 3-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils.

Ovechkin became the second-youngest and second-fastest player to hit the milestone, per NHL Public Relations.

While Ovechkin played in his 1,144th NHL game Saturday, 42-year-old goalie Dave Ayres appeared in his first as an emergency fill-in for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Ayres was called upon when both of Carolina's netminders went down with injuries, and he was able to help the Hurricanes to a win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Saturday's slate also featured five teams scoring five or more goals and 12 players with multiple tallies, including Jack Eichel of the Buffalo Sabres and the Boston Bruins' David Pastrnak, who moved back into first in the scoring race with his 44th and 45th goals.

Ovechkin Nets 700th Goal in Washington Defeat

Ovechkin's historic goal was of extra importance to the Capitals, as it tied the contest with the Devils at two goals apiece early in the third period.

Unfortunately for the Capitals, they were not able to finish off the victory at Prudential Center, as Damon Severson scored the game-winning goal with two minutes remaining.

Ovechkin's record tally came off a feed from Evgeny Kuznetsov. He detailed the moment after the game in conversation with Mike Vogel of the team's official website: "A good pass by Kuzy. I hit the net, and it hits the post and goes in. It's over, so we move on."

Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Jaromir Jagr, Brett Hull, Marcel Dionne, Phil Esposito and Mike Gartner are the other seven players to have reached the 700-goal mark. Ovechkin noted that he was honored to join the elite company but was shifting his focus to Sunday's showdown with the Pittsburgh Penguins, per NHL.com's Tom Gulitti.

"That's pretty good company, so I'm happy to be there," Ovechkin said. "But we have to focus on different things, and right now it's important points for us, and tomorrow [against the Pittsburgh Penguins] is going to be a big game."

Since Pittsburgh and Washington both lost Saturday, they remain deadlocked at the top of the Metropolitan Division. Sunday's meeting is one of three clashes between the rivals before the end of the regular season.

On an individual level, Ovechkin is in the hunt for the NHL scoring title. He netted his 42nd goal Saturday and is three back of Pastrnak and two behind Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Carolina Wins with Emergency Goalie

Dave Ayres turned into the most unlikely star of the season after James Reimer and Petr Mrazek went down with injuries.

The 42-year-old is a Zamboni driver at the Mattamy Athletic Center in Toronto and serves as a practice netminder for the Maple Leafs.

Ayres made his NHL debut in the second period and promised his new teammates that he would be prepared to hold on to the win in the final stanza, per the Toronto Sun's Lance Hornby.

"Their guy came in and said 'get ready,'" Ayres revealed. "I thought I'd never be nervous if this ever happened, but as you could tell, I couldn't stop a puck in the second. But I told the boys if I come in the third, I'll be ready to go."

Ayres finished with eight saves on 10 shots as he became the oldest NHL goalie to make his regular-season debut.

He described the moment as a "once in a lifetime" experience, per NHL PR:

Carolina needed the victory to keep pace with the Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Islanders in the Eastern Conference wild-card race.

All three teams are level on 74 points, with the Islanders owning one game in hand on the Hurricanes and three on the Blue Jackets.

The St. Louis Blues became the first team in the Western Conference to hit the 70-point mark Tuesday by ending a two-game losing streak.

The Stanley Cup champion took down the Calgary Flames in a shootout to conclude a small slate of games, as some franchises are still off due to the extended All-Star break.

In Tuesday's other NHL contest, Buffalo Sabres forward Jack Eichel set a career high in goals in a loss to the Ottawa Senators.

Although the achievement was nice for the player, Buffalo failed to gain ground in the wild-card race, as it let up three third-period tallies to the Senators.

Blues Break Losing Streak, Hit 70 Points

St. Louis had the weird scheduling quirk of playing back-to-back games right after Saturday's All-Star Game.

On Monday, the Blues missed their chance to hit the 70-point mark in a loss to the Vancouver Canucks.

They made up for that defeat Tuesday by squeezing out a 5-4 shootout win over the Flames, which extended their lead atop the Central Division to eight points and ended a two-game losing run.

Both David Perron and Alex Pietrangelo noted after the game that it was not the team's best performance, but it found a way to earn the victory.

“I’m happy we found a way to win the game. It doesn’t matter (how)," Perron told reporters after the game.

“I don’t think we played defensively the way we wanted, but I say it about our group all the time, we find a way to win," Pietrangelo added.

Perron recorded one of the two assists on Zach Sanford's game-tying goal in the third period, which was an answer to a pair of tallies from Calgary in the second stanza.

The Blues have two games left on their current road trip—both against teams in playoff contention—before they return to Enterprise Center for a three-game run during the first full week of February.

Due to the early start out of the week-long layoff, St. Louis has played two more contests than the second-place Colorado Avalanche and third-place Dallas Stars.

As long as the team holds on to first place, it should lock up home-ice advantage since the Canucks lead the Pacific Division with 10 fewer points.

Jack Eichel Scores 29th Goal, Sets Career High

Eichel entered the 2019-20 campaign with a career high of 28 goals from last season. In 28 fewer games, the 23-year-old has eclipsed that total.

His 29th tally of the year occurred in the second period and served as a game-tying goal for the Sabres, who went down by two in the first period.

Unfortunately for the home side, it was unable to keep the Ottawa offense at bay in the final 20 minutes.

The loss to a team beneath it in the standings was Buffalo's biggest takeaway from Tuesday rather than Eichel's new personal best, as he told NHL.com's Heather Engel

"We can't play like that at home, a team coming off a back-to-back. We just had a break," he said. "It's not good enough. I mean, if you want to make the playoffs, that's not a playoff-caliber effort by us. You know that, I know that, everyone in the room knows that."

The defeat kept the Sabres eight points back of their closest playoff rival and 10 points behind second place in the Eastern Conference wild-card race.

Buffalo will have a chance to gain ground over the next few weeks on home ice, as it plays seven of its next eight games at KeyBank Center. Two of those contests are against the wild-card leader Columbus Blue Jackets.

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby typically doesn't wait long to make an impact on the ice after an extended absence.

The 32-year-old continued that trend Tuesday, when he produced a goal and three assists in the Penguins' 7-3 win over the Minnesota Wild.

According to NHL Public Relations, Crosby has played a role in a tally in each of his four returns from absences of 20 games or longer. Tuesday marked the second four-point performance of that collection of contests.

Crosby wasn't the only star of the league to put on a show during the 11-game slate, as Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews earned a hat-trick in a win over the New Jersey Devils in which Blake Coleman notched three goals for the losing side.

Crosby Excels in Return

It took seven minutes and 57 seconds for Crosby to contribute to his first Penguins goal since November.

The Canadian notched the first of his three assists on Evgeni Malkin's opening tally. He followed that up with another handout to Malkin in the second period and then a goal and an assist in the closing stanza.

In his first game action since November 9, he said he found a rhythm on the power play, per NHL.com's Wes Crosby

"It was good," Crosby said. "It helps when you get some power plays early. Still a couple shifts that I feel like were a little tough, but as far as rhythm, it helps to get on the power play early and get your feet under you a bit. Team played well."

Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan said "it's hard to get surprised" about what Crosby achieves on the ice, even when coming off a long injury layoff, per Pens Inside Scoop:

Pittsburgh played well without its captain, as it went 18-6-4, and it could use his return to spring a run at the Washington Capitals for first place in the Metropolitan Division.

The Capitals enter Wednesday with a four-point edge over the Penguins, and both are in the mix for home ice in the Eastern Conference. The Boston Bruins lead the Atlantic Division with 66 points.

Crosby can make his impact on the playoff race in the next six contests, with Pittsburgh facing Boston twice and visiting Washington February 2.

Matthews Adds to Scoring Total With Hat-Trick

One week after eclipsing the 30-goal barrier, Matthews added three to his second-best total in the NHL.

The 22-year-old scored on the power play in the second period and then bagged a pair in the third period to move his season tally up to 34.

His performance helped the Maple Leafs end a three-game losing run that was made worse by an 8-4 loss to the Florida Panthers Sunday.

Matthews said after Tuesday's victory that he and his teammates wanted to bounce back from the weekend defeat, per NHL.com's Dave McCarthy

"Overall, we wanted to have a good bounce back game (after an 8-4 loss to the Florida Panthers on Sunday)," he said. "There was a bit of a lull in the second period, some stuff we'd like to clean up and do better, but all in all, nice to get back in the win column."

Since the new calendar year began, Matthews has found the back of the net on seven occasions with two multi-goal performances.

With David Pastrnak and the Boston Bruins being shut out Tuesday, Matthews moved within two tallies of the NHL's current scoring leader.

United States Earns 3-1 Win vs. Germany at 2019 Hockey World Championships

May 19, 2019

The United States earned a crucial 3-1 win over Germany during Sunday play at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships behind third-period goals from Dylan Larkin and Jack Eichel.

Frederik Tiffels scored Germany's lone goal, while James Van Riemsdyk also found the back of the net for the United States.

The victory at least temporarily put the United States atop Group A on 14 points and more importantly clinched its spot in the quarterfinals, as it went five points clear of fifth-place Slovakia with just one game remaining. With a tough matchup against Canada for the Americans on Tuesday, clinching their berth in the knockout phase ahead of time was huge.

Now, the United States will only be jockeying for final position in Group A and a favorable matchup in the quarters.

Sunday's game was no walk in the park for the United States, however.

Frederik Tiffels opened the game's scoring 12 minutes into the first period for Germany, burying his wrister after a sloppy turnover from the United States.

Leon Draisaitl was credited with the assist.

Two minutes later, James Van Riemsdyk tipped a Clayton Keller shot into the net to even the contest.

The teams played even through the second period, with Mathias Niederberger making one of the saves of the tournament against United States superstar forward Jack Eichel.

That set up the United States' decisive third period. Ten minutes in, Larkin broke the deadlock after a beautiful centering feed from Van Riemsdyk.

Eichel would add an insurance goal with just over three minutes remaining, and the United States had their win.

Tuesday's game against Canada will still matter for positioning, but the Americans won't be desperately trying to qualify for the quarters, a situation they could have found themselves in with a loss. The Germans are sitting pretty as well.

Because fifth-place Slovakia can only get to 12 points—the number of points Germany already holds—the Germans cannot be knocked out of the tournament by Slovakia. Germany won the matchup between the teams, 3-2, and the first tiebreaker is the head-to-head matchup.

So like the Americans, the Germans are through to the quarters. Their final game against Finland on Tuesday will matter for positioning only. And with Finland already at 13 points and Canada holding the head-to-head tiebreaker on Slovakia, the four teams that will advance out of Group A are set. Only the seedings remain to be determined.

Patrick Kane, Jack Eichel Power USA Past Denmark in Dominant 7-1 Win

The United States cruised to a 7-1 victory over Denmark on Saturday in a Group A game as part of the 2019 IIHF Hockey World Championship at Steel Arena in Kosice, Slovakia.

Frank Vatrano of the Florida Panthers opened the scoring for Team USA midway through the first period. Alex DeBrincat (Chicago Blackhawks), Clayton Keller (Arizona Coyotes) and Chris Kreider (New York Rangers) also found the net as the U.S. tallied four goals in a 10-minute stretch to blow the game open.

It marked the Americans' fourth straight victory since a tournament-opening loss to the host nation of Slovakia. The team also moved within two points of clinching a berth in the knockout rounds.

Dylan Larkin (Detroit Red Wings) and Jack Eichel (Buffalo Sabres) also lit the lamp for the U.S., while DeBrincat added another goal in the second period. The Hawks' Patrick Kane chipped in three assists. New Jersey Devils goalie Cory Schneider made 21 saves to pick up the win.

Nick Olesen scored the only goal for Denmark.

It represented a much-needed bounce-back performance from the American defense, which has come under fire throughout the event. The group allowed four goals in the upset loss to Slovakia and gave up three to a lowly Great Britain squad last time out.

The U.S. features more than enough offensive firepower to challenge for a medal and possibly even its first title in the event since 1960, when the Olympics' tournament also served as the 27th world championship. Defensive play will determine whether the team can live up to that potential, though.

Looking ahead, the United States is back on the ice Sunday to face off with Germany. The Germans head into a game later Saturday against hockey superpower Canada as the only Group A team without a loss.

Denmark returns to action Monday with its own clash against the Canadians.

NHL Rumors: Latest Buzz on William Nylander, Jeff Skinner Contract Situations

The NHL season begins Oct. 3, but some of the major rumors around the league surround guys who have yet to hit the ice this preseason.

William Nylander is one of the most dynamic young players in hockey, but he still is without a contract. How close is he to finally joining the Toronto Maple Leafs?

And what is the status of another star winger in Jeff Skinner with his new club? The Buffalo Sabres are an emerging force in the NHL, although it remains to be seen if Skinner will be in their future.

Where's William?

After a late-night agreement between Shea Theodore and the Vegas Golden Knights, Nylander and Nick Ritchie of the Anaheim Ducks remain the NHL's last two unsigned restricted free agents, but more intrigue surrounds Nylander.

The 22-year-old is coming off back-to-back 61-point seasons, having missed just one game over that span. His speed and electric hands make him a top-line forward on almost any team, but right now it appears he still is not too close to showcasing his talents once again.

Appearing on Toronto's TSN 1050 Monday, NHL insider Darren Dreger said that Nylander's camp and the Maple Leafs still have not made much progress in contract talks:

"Last week we talked about the thinking that there was at least good dialogue happening between the two sides. I don't think that it's turned nasty in any way, shape or form, but I don't get the sense—unless something changed on the weekend—that there's as much back and forth going on as we maybe initially thought."

Fellow TSN NHL insider Bob McKenzie echoed this sentiment on Monday before Theodore was able to reach a deal:

Dreger speculated that if Nylander is looking for a long-term deal around $7.5 million annually, then the situation could drag on even longer. Why? The Maple Leafs have one of the more challenging cap situations brewing in the next two years.

Toronto is set to start its seven-year, $77 million commitment it handed out to John Tavares this season, and the team has a healthy $13 million in cap space this season. However, Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews both see their rookie deals expire at the end of this season, putting them in the same spot as Nylander now.

Matthews is obviously the No. 1 priority, and it is safe to assume he will get somewhere around the eight-year, $80 million deal Jack Eichel got from the Sabres after his rookie deal. Toronto would also likely have to move Nathan Horton's $5.3 million salary-cap hit that expires after the 2019-20 season, but this will cost the team a high draft pick to do so.

With Horton, Jake Gardiner's $4.05 million and Ron Hainsey's $3 million off the books next offseason, this would give the Maple Leafs with roughly $15 million to spend between Marner and Nylander. That is doable, but it also ties up a massive portion of Toronto's overall cap space in Marner, Matthews, Nylander and Tavares, which makes it more difficult to afford the quality depth players, especially on defense, needed to make long playoff runs.

It also would leave goaltender Frederik Andersen's future in doubt, as he would likely not be able to get a sizable raise from his five-year, $25 million contract that expires after the 2020-21 season.

So unless Toronto tries to trade Nylander for high-end prospects and draft picks, it seems that he will likely have to accept a short-term bridge deal to suit up for the Maple Leafs. If Toronto does not yet want to invest in him long-term, Nylander may have no choice but to bet on himself and make his play force the Maple Leafs, or someone else, to eventually dish out a major contract on the budding star.

Skinner only a rental?

One of the major trade pieces to move this summer was Skinner, who was dealt to Buffalo after eight seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes. The return was solid but not spectacular for a player of Skinner's ability, as the Hurricanes received a decent prospect in Cliff Pu along with a second-rounder in 2019 and a third- and sixth-rounder in 2020.

Why not anything major for a three-time 30-goal scorer? Skinner is set to become an unrestricted free agent this upcoming offseason.

It seems the Sabres' apparent apprehension to part with any significant assets for Skinner could be correct, as there is the possibility of him being a one-year rental, according to Dreger.

"This one for me is going to be interesting to see how it plans out," Dreger said last week on Buffalo's WGR 550. "There really hasn't been any discussion of a contract extension.

"Both sides essentially agreed, 'Let's get the season going. Let’s see how Jeff is fitting in with the Buffalo Sabres."

Skinner is set to make $5.7 million this season, and given the nature of unrestricted free agency, he will likely receive a raise unless he flops in Buffalo.

Like Toronto, Buffalo has some cap navigation to do. Potential superstars Rasmus Dahlin and Casey Mittelstadt will see their rookie contracts expire in three and two years, respectively. The Sabres will also have just $2.8 million in cap space for this season, but that number will greatly increase next offseason with Jason Pominville's $5.6 million and Matt Moulson's $3.98 million off the books in addition to Skinner.

The Sabres still have five years left at $6 million annually on the disappointing Kyle Okposo, but they can still manage that even with decisions to make on younger players like Nathan Beaulieu, Zemgus Girgensons and Johan Larsson, who will all be restricted free agents this offseason.

Thus, it could be a tight squeeze, but the Sabres could make it work on a Skinner extension, but it will be all about the fit.

Skinner's speed and creativity should work well on the wing with Eichel or Mittelstadt. However, Skinner could become expendable if top prospects like Rasmus Asplund and Alex Nylander are able to make a splash in Buffalo's forwards group. There are certainly a lot of factors to watch here with one of the top free agent candidates of next offseason.

Jalen Ramsey Angers Hockey Players by Saying He Could Make NHL in 6 Months

Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey recently ruffled some feathers in an interview with ESPN's Mina Kimes, and he was so outspoken that he even rubbed some athletes in a different sport the wrong way.

In the profile, Ramsey told Kimes that he has excelled in every sport that he has played other than baseball. That includes, most notably, football and lacrosse. And while he has never given hockey a shot, he is confident that he could make it to the NHL if he trained for six months.

That didn't sit well with professional hockey players, as you could imagine. Some players spend the majority of their upbringing playing the game and never even sniff the NHL. To say he could pick up the sport and perform well enough to reach the best hockey league in the world within six months comes off as borderline disrespectful.

"I think it's insulting to our league," Buffalo Sabres center Jack Eichel said, per ESPN.com's Emily Kaplan. "For us as players, we've dedicated our lives to be playing in the NHL. To think after six months you could come play arguably one of the hardest sports in the world? I mean, I think it's ridiculous he would say that. It's ignorant."

Eichel was not alone in those sentiments, either.

"I can bet any money in the world and there's no chance he can play in the NHL in six months," St. Louis Blues winger Vladimir Tarasenko told Kaplan. "It's impossible. Him saying that ... it de-classes our sport."

Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Seth Jones believes Ramsey would have a hard time just mastering a fundamental of the sport.

"You can't even learn to skate in six months," Jones told Kaplan.

While none of the players Kaplan spoke to were willing to pull a Ramsey and declare themselves ready for the NFL, one NHL player did make his feelings on the subject quite clear.

"I think I'd be about 1,000 percent times better at his position in six months than he'll be at mine," San Jose Sharks winger Evander Kane said.

Ramsey has turned himself into a Pro Bowl cornerback in just two years in the NFL. Even if he believes he could succeed on the ice, he appears to have a long and bright future ahead of him on the gridiron.

The winner of the Rasmus Dahlin sweepstakes will be determined in Saturday's NHL draft lottery.

The Swedish defenseman, who is the consensus No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NHL draft, will learn his NHL destination once the lottery concludes.

Barring a complete shock between Saturday and the draft, Dahlin will hear his name called first at the American Airlines Center in Dallas on June 22.

The Buffalo Sabres, Ottawa Senators and Arizona Coyotes have the best chances to earn the right to draft Dahlin, while 12 other teams hope they get lucky and jump over the three worst teams from the 2018 regular season.

Buffalo Not Guaranteed to Earn No. 1 Pick

The Sabres have the best chance of earning the No. 1 overall pick, but with the lottery system in place, anything can happen.

Only one team with the worst record in the regular season in the past six years won the draft lottery, while seven franchises secured the No. 1 pick with the league's worst record in 23 drawings.

Buffalo missed out on Aaron Ekblad in 2014 and Connor McDavid in 2015 despite owning the worst record in hockey.

The Sabres selected Sam Reinhart with the No. 2 pick in 2014 and Jack Eichel directly behind McDavid in 2015.

Although Reinhart and Eichel have found individual success with the Sabres, the organization hasn't put it all together.

If Buffalo wins the draft lottery, it would have three young stars and the opportunity to work its way back into the playoff discussion.

Teams With Lesser Odds Have More Hope After 2017 Lottery

Of the five teams with the best odds to pick first in 2017, the New Jersey Devils were the only one to secure a selection in the top three.

The Devils, who chose Nico Hischier with the No. 1 overall pick a year ago, entered the draft lottery with an 8.5 percent chance to win it.

The Philadelphia Flyers and Dallas Stars had slimmer odds to pick in the top three, but both lucked out and were placed beneath the Devils in the selection order.

In 2016, the teams that picked in the top three came from the group of six franchises with the best odds to select at the top of the first round.

Given the results of the 2017 lottery, there is hope for teams with odds of eight percent or lower to secure the talents of Dahlin.

For teams like the Florida Panthers, St. Louis Blues and Dallas Stars, who barely missed out on the postseason, Dahlin's unlikely addition would boost them into the playoff conversation for the 2018-19 campaign.

Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals will look to lead the Metropolitan Division to its second consecutive NHL All-Star Game title Sunday afternoon.

The defending champion of the three-on-three tournament, featuring a team from each NHL division, begins with the Central Division squaring off against the Pacific Division at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.

The Eastern Conference showdown between the Atlantic and Metropolitan Divisions will follow, and then the championship match will be held between the two victors.

The Metropolitan and Pacific have one title each since the three-on-three format was instituted in 2016. The Central is the only division that hasn't qualified for a final.

Metropolitan vs. Atlantic

The Metropolitan roster contains some of the biggest stars in hockey, with Crosby, Ovechkin, John Tavares of the New York Islanders and Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers taking the ice Sunday.

However, a win won't come easy for the Met All-Stars, as they face the team with four players participating on home ice.

The quartet, headlined by Steven Stamkos and NHL points leader Nikita Kucherov, comes from the best team in the NHL, the Tampa Bay Lightning. Stamkos, Kucherov, Brayden Point and Andrei Vasilevskiy have plenty of motivation to succeed Sunday while putting on a show.

Goalie Vasilevskiy leads the NHL in wins, with 29. The 23-year-old boasts a 2.18 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage that the Atlantic hopes will translate to the three-on-three format.

Vasilevskiy's task won't be easy, as he will face the league's top scorer in Ovechkin and the fifth-best scorer in Tavares. Both of them are expected to pelt a flurry of shots at the net.

For all the star power the Metropolitan has, the Atlantic can match it and could pull out a win thanks to the chemistry between the three Lightning forwards on its roster.

The Buffalo Sabres' Jack Eichel and Toronto Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews are two of the top young stars in the NHL, and since they won't be able to break out on a bigger stage at the Olympics this year, they could use the All-Star Game as a catalyst to further their burgeoning stardom on a national level.

The key for the Jon Cooper-coached Atlantic is to stop the Metropolitan from getting out to a fast start that creates momentum. The Met All-Stars did that a year ago on the way to its 10-6 semifinal victory. Crosby, Tavares and Ovechkin all scored in the second period of the win, with Cam Atkinson and Wayne Simmonds contributing two goals apiece in the contest as well.

Prediction: Atlantic 6, Metropolitan 4

Central vs. Pacific

Despite having experienced stars on its roster in past years like the Chicago Blackhawks' Patrick Kane and P.K. Subban of the Nashville Predators, the Central has fallen to the Pacific in two straight years.

Kane and Subban are once again at the forefront of the Central roster, with Brayden Schenn of the St. Louis Blues, Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon and Dallas' Tyler Seguin among the supporting cast.

But there's one superstar who could rise above the rest in the battle of Western Conference foes, and that's Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid.

Subban and fellow defensemen Alex Pietrangelo of the Blues and John Klingberg of the Dallas Stars must focus on containing McDavid when they are on the ice. If that doesn't happen, the Oilers captain could win the matchup himself.

The Pacific also contains an edge in goal, with Marc-Andre Fleury of the Vegas Golden Knights setting up in between the pipes. The former Penguin has a goals-against average of 1.77 and a .942 save percentage in 18 games for the expansion side.

Although McDavid and Fleury are expected to feature in key roles, the difference-makers in the Western Conference showdown could be the defensemen.

Five of the six defenders on the Central and Pacific rosters have 25 or more assists, with Klingberg leading the group at 42. The only player in that collection with under 25 assists is the Arizona Coyotes' Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

Prediction: Pacific 7, Central 5

Final: Atlantic vs. Pacific

The NHL would love nothing more than to see some of its top young stars in Eichel, Matthews and McDavid showcased while the host team's division is in the All-Star Game final.

The duel for All-Star Game supremacy could create one of the top moments of the hockey season and give the NHL some positive press with the Olympics and its lack of NHL stars around the corner.

The slight edge goes to the Atlantic in this projected final because of the four Lightning players' efforts to win the first of what they hope will be many trophies on home ice.

Prediction: Atlantic 8, Pacific 6
