Charlotte 49ers football players will don gold when the team's second season in the American Athletic Conference begins this fall.

The 49ers announced on Thursday that they will wear their "gold rush" uniforms on Aug. 31 for a home opener against James Madison.

The uniforms feature gold helmets with the word "Charlotte" written in green on the back and the player's number on the side.

Players will also wear a matching gold shirt, as wear as white pants with gold stripes down the side.

The uniforms are an homage to North Carolina's history as the site of a gold rush after the precious metal was discovered in what is now the Charlotte metro area in 1799.

The Charlotte athletics program underwent rebranding in 2020, featuring its current logo of a "C" with a gold-mining pick inside.

The 49ers are looking to improve on two consecutive 3-9 seasons during the team's second season under head coach Biff Poggi. Conference play begins on Sept. 28 against Rice.

UNC Charlotte quarterback Kevin Olsen—the brother of Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen—was reportedly indicted on rape charges Monday, per WSOC-TV

According to the report, a grand jury indicted Olsen on three counts of second-degree rape, two counts of assault on a female and a count of second-degree sexual offense. The quarterback has been suspended from the university's football program.

The story noted Olsen was charged in February.

"Prosecutors said Olsen texted a woman and threatened to kill her," the report continued. "They said he raped her, punched her in the face and also threatened to kill himself, wrapping a phone charger around his neck."

Blake Hanson of WSOCTV provided a mug shot at the time:

WSOCTV previously reported in a separate story Olsen posted bail of more than $100,000 after he was charged.
