Garrett Wilson Wants Jets Offense to 'Mix It Up' amid Struggles; Questions Route Tree

This season has featured a slow start for New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who has 20 catches for 191 yards and a touchdown on 34 targets through four games. He's on pace for 764 receiving yards after eclipsing 1,000 yards each of his first two seasons.

During an appearance on the Bart & Hahn ESPN New York radio show, Wilson didn't appear pleased with the current state of the Jets offense, lamenting the lack of creativity relative to the rest of the league. ESPN's Rich Cimini relayed the quotes.

"I don't think we do a lot of different stuff to be honest. I watch football on Sundays and I see a lot of teams mix it up and stuff like that. I don't think we do that. I think we know our identity. It's just about going out and executing it or figuring out if it's going to work. I don't think we're trying a lot of different things.

"I know, personally, my route tree hasn't been what it has been the last two years as far as the stuff I've been running. It's just about figuring out if it's the right identity and whether it's going to win games."

The Jets' offense is run by coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who once had great success with New York quarterback Aaron Rodgers when the two were together in Green Bay (2019-2021). The two haven't found that same success yet this year in New York, with the team's average of 19.0 points per game only good enough for 21st in the NFL.

The offense's low point occurred in a 10-9 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday. On a rainy and sloppy day, the Jets failed to get in the end zone, and running back Breece Hall rushed for just four yards on 10 carries. Wilson also failed to eclipse 60 receiving yards for the fourth straight game.

The Jets clearly have work to do on that end, based on the on-field product. But Wilson venting his frustrations publicly about the offense's direction clearly indicate that not everyone is on the same page.

At any rate, the Jets don't have much time to figure it out. Their next three games are against the 4-0 Minnesota Vikings, 3-1 Buffalo Bills and 3-1 Pittsburgh Steelers. The Vikings are fourth in scoring defense, and Pittsburgh is second. Ultimately, something needs to change for New York to get the offense going, especially with stiff challenges looming large.

Aaron Rodgers, Jets Offense Called Out by NFL Fans After Loss vs. Bo Nix, Broncos

The New York Jets looked more like a bunch of kites flailing in the wind on Sunday, at least on the offensive side of the ball.

New York lost an ugly game against the Broncos on Sunday, 10-9, as Greg Zuerlein missed a go-ahead field goal with just under a minute remaining. The Jets' offense did very little well against the Broncos, managing just 248 yards of total offense and no touchdowns.

The running game was stagnant, with only 64 yards on 23 attempts. Aaron Rodgers (24-of-42 for 225 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions) didn't seem to be in sync with his receivers and took five sacks. Star wideout Garrett Wilson was tied for the team-lead with eight targets, though it only translated to five catches for 41 yards.

Unsurprisingly, NFL analysts and diehard Jets fans couldn't believe what they saw from the offense on Sunday:

https://twitter.com/billdifilippo/status/1840483836074856731

And despite it all, the Jets were nearly bailed out by a Broncos team that was just as poor on offense (186 total yards, 60 yards through the air) and handed the Jets a potential win on a silver platter late in the contest.

After Rodgers was sacked on a 4th-and-10 attempt with 1:46 remaining, the Broncos went three-and-out on the following drive and missed a 50-yard field goal. That gave the Jets the ball back with on their own 40-yard line with 1:27 remaining and no timeouts, needing only a field goal to win.

A completion to Breece Hall and a defensive pass interference call gave the Jets the ball on the Denver 36-yard line, putting them in field goal range. The Jets only managed four more yards from there, however, and Zuerlein missed a 50-yard attempt of his own, allowing the Broncos to run out the clock.

Yes, conditions on Sunday were hardly ideal given the inclement weather. But Rodgers and the offense would be expected to at least manage a touchdown or double-digit points. What transpired on Sunday wasn't indicative of a potential playoff team.

Both the Jets and Broncos are now 2-2 on the season, with New York now traveling to London next weekend to face the red-hot Minnesota Vikings.

Jets' Garrett Wilson Rips Giants Fan for Criticizing Malik Nabers' Drops: 'Shut Up'

New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson is not impressed with criticism of the New York Giants' Malik Nabers after the rookie wideout suffered a concussion in Week 4.

"Shut up bra," Wilson wrote on X in response to a fan critiquing Nabers' performance in the Giants' 20-15 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Friday.

Nabers set a record as the first NFL wide receiver to record 25 catches and three touchdowns in his first four games before leaving in Thursday's fourth quarter with a concussion.

He made 12 catches for 115 yards prior to the injury, which he suffered after landing awkwardly while diving for a fourth-and-6 on the Giants' 45-yard-line in the final minutes of Thursday's loss.

Nabers wrote on his Instagram story that he was "all good" after the game, then returned to the Giants' facility on Friday, per ESPN's Jordan Raanan.

He will need to clear concussion protocol in order to play during the Giants' next game, although the Week 4 game taking place on Thursday gives him more time to recover before next Sunday's Week 5 contest against the Seattle Seahawks.

Nabers' return will be critical for the Giants' hopes of recording a second win behind quarterback Daniel Jones as offensive coordinator Mike Kafka appears to be centering his team's passing game on the rookie wideout.

Through four games Nabers has made 35 catches on 52 targets, and after Thursday's game currently leads the NFL with 386 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns.

The fan appeared to reference Nabers' drop of a fourth-and-4 on the Washington Commanders' 22-yard-line with two minutes left on the clock during the Giants' Week 2 loss, a moment he later told Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post was "hard to wash... away."

If Nabers is able to return for Week 5, the No. 6 pick of the 2024 draft could remain on pace to challenge the rookie wideout record of 1,486 receiving yards set by the Los Angeles Rams' Puka Nacua in 2023.

Wilson, the No. 10 pick of the 2022 draft, is meanwhile off to a quieter start to the season as the Jets continue turning to their running back duo of Breece Hall and Braelon Allen to drive offense. Through three games Wilson has made 15 catches for 150 yards and a touchdown.

Both he and Nabers are set to serve as key parts of their respective teams' offense this fall, and it looks like Wilson is so far keeping an eye on how those roles are being discussed on social media.

Jets' Garrett Wilson, Breece Hall: 49ers 'Whooped Our Ass' and 'Just Played Harder'

New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson and running back Breece Hall didn't think there was any room for doubt in their team's 32-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football.

Wilson acknowledged the Jets are "not there yet" and that the 49ers "whooped our ass today."

Hall struck a similar tone when he said San Francisco "just played harder than us" and provided an example for the level New York needs to be at.

To say Monday's game was a reality check for the Jets is a bit of a stretch because many were questioning their championship credentials. They sat 13th in Bleacher Report's NFL power rankings entering Week 1.

More than anything, New York's performance largely reinforced existing concerns.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was 13-of-21 for 167 yards, one touchdown and an interception in his first start since tearing his Achilles.

ESPN's Rich Cimini provided a deeper dive into the numbers.

"On passes of 10 yards of fewer, he completed only five of 12 for 46 yards and an interception (not counting designed screens)," Cimini wrote. "He finished the day with a 10.7% completion percentage below expectation, which is his worst mark since 2021 — the third of his four MVP seasons."

The offense was on the field for just 21:20 after finishing 25th in time of possession in 2023. Turnovers were another theme that carried over from last year as Hall lost a fumble in addition to Rodgers' interception.

The biggest surprise for the Jets was an unpleasant one. Their defense, which was among the NFL's best a season ago, gave up 401 yards and allowed San Francisco's backup running back to carve the unit up with regularity. Jordan Mason had 147 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

There's no need to panic after just one game. New York clearly has some flaws to iron out, though, if it wants to achieve the ambitions it initially laid out for itself when it acquired Rodgers last summer.

Garrett Wilson Trolls Michigan, Calls Wolverines 'Ass' amid Big Deficit vs. Texas

New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson had a one-word assessment of Michigan after the first half of the Wolverines' game against Texas on Saturday.

The former Ohio State star called his old rival "ass" after it fell behind 24-3 through two quarters:

Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson also chimed in with his thoughts about his alma mater and how much it was dominating:

Wilson is obviously a bit partisan when it comes to any Michigan-related matters, but he pretty much summed up the Wolverines' start.

They only had 88 yards of offense in the first half against Texas and allowed the Longhorns to score on four of their first five drives. The exception was when Bert Auburn missed a 43-yard field goal.

https://twitter.com/38Godfrey/status/1832467704185262458

The absence of a passing game is particularly concerning for Michigan.

Rather than turning to the transfer portal to replace outgoing quarterback J.J. McCarthy, first-year head coach Sherrone Moore leaned on continuity with Davis Warren and Alex Orji. The early returns on Warren aren't encouraging, and Moore seems to be signaling he trusts Orji even less based on his usage on Saturday.

Many expected Michigan to take a step backward after losing head coach Jim Harbaugh and a number of key players to the NFL. The team still opened at No. 9 in the preseason AP Top 25 and was eighth in the Coaches Poll, so expectations remained reasonably high.

It's time to recalibrate those forecasts.

Jets' Aaron Rodgers Calls 'Bulls--t' on Rumors of Garrett Wilson Turmoil at Camp

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers said Wednesday that rumors of any sort of friction with wide receiver Garrett Wilson are "bulls--t" and "a whole lot of nothing."

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Wilson addressed the conversations he's had with Rodgers.

"I feel like every conversation we have are special," Wilson said. "I don't take them for granted."

Wilson and Rodgers were first seen having an animated exchange on Saturday, but it ended with the two shaking hands.

The disconnect between the quarterback and receiver continued when the Jets started practicing in pads this week. The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt wrote on Tuesday there appeared to be a miscommunication with Wilson not being where Rodgers expected him to be, leading "to a discussion between the two off to the side after the play."

Things seemed to be much better between Rodgers and Wilson on Wednesday. Rosenblatt noted they connected for three touchdowns during red-zone drills.

Training camp disputes and arguments between players are not uncommon. There was a fist fight at Jets camp between players on both sides of the ball during Saturday's practice.

Any issues between Rodgers and Wilson in the moment was most likely them trying to hash out the details on what they were trying to run. Based on the improves results today, their back-and-forth verbal sparring paid off.

Jets' Aaron Rodgers: Garrett Wilson Has 'Talent' and 'Ability' to Be NFL's Best WR

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers believes Garrett Wilson can be the NFL's best wideout.

"I told him in the meeting [Tuesday], I think he has the talent and the ability to be the best receiver in the league," Rodgers told reporters at training camp, per ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Rodgers also added this remark after hearing that Wilson studied tape of his quarterback's old games with the Green Bay Packers: "The best players are self-motivated, and he's definitely that."

Wilson has caught 178 passes for 2,145 yards and seven touchdowns over his first two seasons, with the first one resulting in Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year awards. Last season ended with a 95/1,042/3 stat line.

Those are good numbers without any context, but he's been playing in an offense that has seen seven different quarterbacks throw passes over the last two years.

Most of them have been from Zach Wilson, who ranked 30th out of 32 qualified quarterbacks in passer rating last year.

The Jets brought Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, in last year following a trade with the Packers. However, his 2023 season lasted less than a quarter after he suffered a torn Achilles tendon against the Buffalo Bills.

Rodgers is now healthy and forming a connection with Wilson, with the two notably linking on a 60-yard pass down the sideline at camp recently:

If Rodgers is anywhere close to his old form, there's certainly a path for Wilson to put up monster numbers and find himself among the game's elite wideouts, a tier that currently includes the likes of the Minnesota Vikings' Justin Jefferson, the Cincinnati Bengals' Ja'Marr Chase and the Miami Dolphins' Tyreek Hill, among others.

Rodgers, Wilson and the rest of the Jets will get the 2024 season going on Monday, Sept. 9 when they visit the defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers.

Jets' Garrett Wilson Talks NFL WR Contracts: 'I've Got to Go Make That Happen'

Amid the booming market for wide receivers in the NFL, New York Jets rising star Garrett Wilson appears to be next in line for a major payday.

However, Wilson isn't getting too far ahead of himself, as he told reporters at the start of training camp on Tuesday that he knows he has to prove he's worth a big-money contract extension.

"I see all of it," Wilson said, per Brian Costello of the New York Post. "I don't look at it as far as that can be coming for me. I look at it as I've got to go make that happen."

This offseason alone, Justin Jefferson, A.J. Brown, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jaylen Waddle and Nico Collins all were signed to contracts that are among the richest for wide receivers in NFL history.

Wilson will become eligible for an extension following the 2024 season. The 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year started his career with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons despite a revolving door of Jets quarterbacks in his first two years, so he has already proven his worth. The return of star signal-caller Aaron Rodgers could make him an even bigger star in his third season.

"I've got the opportunity to join an elite group of guys," Wilson said. "That's who gets that type of money is an elite group of guys, guys that are part of teams that win games because of them and are difference-makers every single time they are on the field. I've got to go do it. I'm excited because if you do what you think you can do there's a great conversation going on for it at this time. That's not how I'm motivated, but I'm not going to sit here and act like I don't see it."
