World Championship of Fantasy Football Draft Breakdown Part 1

Apr 27, 2010

by John Gustafson, john@fantasylion.com

I love fantasy football.. shocking, right? As most of you know I started drafting for my first league this year in the New Jersey Fantasy Football League (NJFFL) which is a dynasty league. On Thursday I’ll start drafing for my first redraft league. It’s a satellite league for the World Championships of Fantasy Football. The league winner gets an automatic bid into the 2011 WCOFF Main Event and a shot to win $300,000. WCOFF’s first satellite draft started last Thursday. I want to take a look at that draft and how each round has gone and get a better feel about what to expect for my draft. It’s always easier to breakdown a draft I’m not participating in because I can be more critical. I always feel bad when I say someone I’m playing in a league with had a bad pick, but I have no problem doing it for someone else’s draft. =) Today I’ll tackle the first 3 rounds and take a look at the 4th-6th rounds later this week. You can follow the live draft results by going to the league home page. You’ll find the live draft under the “League” tab. Ladies and gentleman, welcome to the 2010 WCOFF!

ROUND 1

1. USFLSCOTTY- Chris Johnson, Ten RB

2. Wicked Klowns- Adrian Peterson, Min RB

3. Ws Marauders- Maurice Jones-Drew, Jac RB

4. monkeyville- Ray Rice, Bal RB

5. Coyote Streakers- Frank Gore, SF RB

6. Thunder Roadsters- Andre Johnson, Hou WR

7. The Gerbil King- Randy Moss, NE WR

8. Rainbow_Warriors13- Michael Turner, Atl RB

9. Big Daddy- Steven Jackson, Stl RB

10. Big Country- Jamaal Charles, KC RB

11. purestrength1- Reggie Wayne, Ind WR

12. Sprearmint Rhinos- Larry Fitzgerald, Ari WR

POSITION BREAKDOWN: 8 RBs, 4 WRs

BEST PICK: It’s hard to pick a “best pick” in the first round so for this round I’ll go with the best value. In that case, Big Daddy had the best pick with Steven Jackson at 9. I have Jackson ranked 5 overall at RB. He’s a very solid back who does it all and a good value towards the end of the first round. If I’m picking at the end of round 1 on Thursday, I’d love to get Jackson as I think he’s the 2nd best RB in the NFL behind CJ28.

WORST PICK: There’s a tie. Michael Turner and Jamaal Charles are not good values for the first round. Both could pay off and turn out to justify being picked this high, but both come with quite a few question marks. For Turner, he had a down year before getting hurt last year. What’s worse is his backup Jason Snelling came in for him and had some solid games so they may want to supplement Turner’s carries this year to keep him healthy. I don’t like taking guys early coming off injuries. Also Turner doesn’t catch the ball, big no-no for me.

As for Charles, I love the guy, he’s dynamite. But the Chiefs went out and signed Thomas Jones this offseason. Most who are drunk on the Charles juice don’t think it will affect Charles’ numbers too much. I disagree. Charles is the starter, but Jones will see his fair share of carries because Charles isn’t a big back and probably wouldn’t be able to carry a full workload over the course of the season. Because of Jones’ presence, I have Charles conservatively ranked at 16 overall at RB. I wouldn’t take Charles until the late second round.

OTHER OBSERVATIONS: No surprise with the first 4 picks. I’m expecting 95% of drafts to go like that. However, I’m a little suprised we didn’t see a QB go off the board in round 1. You almost always see that, even in these high stakes leagues. I’m not a fan of it, but this year there aren’t a lot of guaranteed studs at RB and WR so I have no problem laying up in the first round and taking Rodgers, Manning, or Brees. I’d much rather have one of them over Michael Turner or Jamaal Charles.

ROUND 2

1. Sprearmint Rhinos- Aaron Rodgers, GB QB

2. purestrength1- Peyton Manning, Ind QB

3. Big Country- Calvin Johnson, Det WR

4. Big Daddy- Marques Colston, NO WR

5. Rainbow_Warriors13- DeSean Jackson, Phi WR

6. The Gerbil King- Miles Austin, Dal WR

7. Thunder Roadsters- Shonn Greene, NYJ RB

8. Coyote Streakers- Brandon Marshall, Mia WR

9. monkeyville- Roddy White, Atl WR

10. Ws Marauders- Sidney Rice, Min WR

11. Wicked Klowns- Drew Brees, NO QB

12. USFLSCOTTY- Steve Smith, NYG WR

POSITION BREAKDOWN: 8 WRs, 3 QBs, 1 RB

BEST PICK: I really like the Greene pick towards the middle of the round, but the best pick in my opinion is Drew Brees at 2.11. Wicked Klowns (an Insane Clown Posse enthusiast I’m sure) paired AP in the first round with the Super Bowl MVP in Drew Brees. By doing so he ensured himself 2 of the top scorers from last year and a top 3 QB and top 2 RB. Wicked Klowns pretty much gave himself a lock for 40-50 points each week and is building his team on 2 guaranteed studs. With so much uncertainty this year, this is not a bad way to go. Brees was typically a first rounder last year so getting him at the end of the second round is a real nice value. Like me, the Klowns aren’t worried about no stinkin’ Madden Curse.

WORST PICK: Ironically enough, the worst pick in this round was Brees’ teammate Marques Colston at 2.4. Colston was the 6th WR taken in the draft. I have him ranked at 14. There’s 7 other WRs I would have taken over Colston at this point in the draft (Austin, Marshall, Rice, Jennings, Boldin, Jackson, White). It’s not that I don’t like Colston, it’s that the Saints have so many weapons, it’s a crapshoot determining who’s going to get the production in that offense week-to-week. Colston would be a WR I take in the 3rd round as my 2nd WR, but definitely not as my #1 in the 2nd round.

OTHER OBSERVATIONS: I thought it was interesting that only 1 RB was selected in round 2. However, with all the running back by committees (RBBC) in the NFL now, the days of going RB-RB are long gone. I love the WR position, but you usually see 3-5 running backs go in the 2nd round. I can’t blame these owners for going WR though. It’s a safe pick at this point in the draft and having a stud WR is a vital part of any team hoping to be successful.

ROUND 3

1. USFLSCOTTY- Dallas Clark, Ind TE

2. Wicked Klowns- Vincent Jackson, SD WR

3. Ws Marauders- Greg Jennings, GB WR

4. monkeyville- Cedric Benson, Cin RB

5. Coyote Streakers- Rashard Mendenhall, Pit RB

6. Thunder Roadsters- DeAngelo Williams, Car RB

7. The Gerbil King- Matt Forte, Chi RB

8. Rainbow_Warriors13- Ryan Grant, GB RB

9. Big Daddy- Steve Smith, Car WR

10. Big Country- Knowshon Moreno, Den RB

11. purestrength1- Joseph Addai, Ind RB

12. Sprearmint Rhinos- Antonio Gates, SD TE

POSITION BREAKDOWN:  7 RBs, 3 WRs, 2 TEs

BEST PICK: This was a tough one, but I’m going to give the edge to Team purestrength1. I have Addai at 7 for RBs and I’ve gotten a lot of crap for it. A lot of people are worried about Donald Brown, but as of right now, I’m not. Things could change this summer and if they do I’ll knock Addai a few notches. But for now, he’s the lead back on one of the best offenses in the NFL and he catches the ball. You can’t ask for more than that from your 1st or 2nd RB. purestrength1 is taking a bit of a gamble though as now he has 3 players from the Indy offense in Manning, Wayne, and Addai. The Colts offense is great however, so this should translate to at least 50-60 points most weeks for Team purestrength1.

WORST PICK: Matt Forte was easily the worst pick of this round. I have Forte generously ranked at 23 right now. The acquisition of Chester Taylor and Forte’s ineffectiveness last year have lead me to believe he will be challenged for his starting job and could possibly lose out as Taylor is a solid and proven back. To The Gerbil King’s credit, he does have 2 great WRs in Austin and Moss on his roster, so I could see why he would take a gamble on Forte. Running backs in Mike Martz offenses are usually fantasy studs. If Forte can overcome all the “ifs” he could be a high reward pick for The Gerbils.

OTHER OBSERVATIONS: The identities and strategies of the teams are starting to take shape. I like the 2 owners going TE in this round trying to beat the TE run to follow. The 3rd round is typically where you’ll see this take place. Sometimes I’ll use that strategy if I know I can make up for it later with an “ace up my sleeve” type player later in the draft. This year I’ll probably wait on a TE though as the position is pretty deep. Overall, this was a very solid round and I like a lot of the players that were selected.

Who's Right? Who's Wrong?

Apr 22, 2010

It’s been a year to regret for famous sports figures. From Tiger Woods’ infidelity to Gilbert Arenas’ immaturity, billionaire ballers have been the top targets for open season public fire.

The criticism hasn’t been unwarranted however. Plaxico Burress shot his own self into a two-year prison term and Ben Roethlisberger’s ability to understand a 200 page-plus playbook takes a backseat to his apparent inability to comprehend the single word “no.” Drugs in every sport –whether it’s performance enhancers or social stimulators – continue to revolve around the sporting world and we’ll soon find out why former boxing champion Edwin Valero recently hung himself while sitting in jail on charges of murdering his wife. And did I mention Serena Williams has a foul mouth?

The life of a professional athlete is one that’s most admired and one that’s most scrutinized. We as fans often hold entertainers to a different degree of human righteousness, forgetting that they often moonlight as regular patrons outside of the boxed televisions we watch them on or the open arenas we cheer them in. So quick to hit the message boards we are to verbally annihilate them whenever they slip up but what makes a sports icon so different from a blue collar worker besides a few extra zeroes in the bank account?

Is the ability to knock down a contested three pointer that much difference than the ability to operate a Metro bus? Sure, one’s more entertaining than the other but which one is more important? Which one is a protestor more likely to lobby against in the face of infidelity or dog fighting charges? The professional that holds your life in their hands for a handful of minutes or the one that holds your attention for a few hours?

Would congress hold the same hearings over performance enhancing steroids to better operate busses as they do for operating baseball bats? Probably not. Maybe we just get a kick out of seeing someone who financially has everything we’ve ever asked for fall prey to the trappings of everyday life. I’ve seen known offenders without a leg to stand on poke and pun against higher salaried crime committers just because they assume money equals brilliance.

And that seems to be the general understanding; the more money you earn, the smarter your decisions must be, the smarter you must be and the straight and narrow you must walk. But just how ridiculous does that sound? Exhibit A makes $20 million a year while Exhibit B makes $20,000 annually. Exhibit A must go through life unscathed while it’s understandable for Exhibit B to incur mistakes based upon their opposing incomes?

Actually, the reverse reigns true for most because money still rules everything and the least you make of it, the cleaner your criminal record better be. If you can score, skate, run, jump and box in this world you’re going to be granted a different leisure from a person who can’t. It’s just that simple. But why do we place athletes on a superhuman pedestal for their ultra-athletic ability then ripped them down from it when we find out they’re only morally human?

Fans don’t gravitate towards athletes based upon their views on capitalism or their debt consolidation tactics but as the world turns the question remains. Will we continue to crucify athletes based upon the idea that we’re ethically better than them or the fact that they’re financially better than us? Jealousy and envy love company.

Jordan Brand Classic Recap (Regional and International Games)

Apr 18, 2010

The Jordan Brand Classic is one of our favorite events of the year. There are three all-star games and we particularly are interested in the International game as we get to see some of the better 15 and 16 year old International players.

The first game of the day was a local affair pitting the best players from the New York City area against the best NYC Suburban players. The Suburban Team won 137-133 in a game in which there was absolutely no defense and in most cases the offense consisted of either a long pass and dunk, or a shot or drive after the first pass. In a game like that it’s tough to be thrilled about anyone, but a few players who stood out for us were:

  • Derrick Williams (St. Anthony, NJ). Williams, a 6′6, 250-pound big body who is headed to Richmond scored 19 points and was the co-MVP. He’s a little undersized for the power forward spot, but has quick feet and can score around the basket out to mid-range. His body is mature and he should be able to contribute to Richmond as a freshman.
  • Ryan Rhoomes (Cardozo HS, Queens). Rhoomes is a lanky 6′8, 205 pounds who is athletic, can attack the hoop and rebounds. Once he gains some weight and strength he’ll have a huge upside. Rhoomes scored 26 points and gathered 10 rebounds. The rumor is that he will attend the South Kent school for a post-graduate season.
  • Gilvydas Biruta (St, Benedict’s, NJ) The 6′8, 240-pound power forward has skills around the basket, is very tough and is a high major talent. He originally declared for Rutgers but has been released from his commitment and would be a great addition for a non-Big East School.
  • J.J. Moore (South Kent, CT/Pittsburgh), Shane Southwell (Rice HS, NY/Kansas State) and Aaron Brown (St. Benedict’’s, NJ/Temple). All these big time recruits can play the two or three, are athletic and can put the ball in the basket. If they can get some defensive concentration they’ll contribute quickly to their schools.

The International game was more an an actual game instead of just a form of entertainment that the first game was. The only issue was that there were not any true big-men on either team. The tallest players were about 6′7. Even so, we were quite impressed with several players.

  • Carmelo Betancourt (5′11, PG, Puerto Rico). This kid is a major talent. He has a great handle with amazing hesitation moves, can score from anywhere, is quick, can penetrate and is a great passer. He’s definitely a high-major player and we hear Georgetown is in the mix.
  • Duane Notice (6′2, CG, Canada). Notice is strong, has good shooting range and can finish inside. He’s a solid scorer. Big East teams are all over him including Syracuse. Notice led all scorers with 23 and gathered eight rebounds in the game.
  • Kevin Pangos (6′1, PG, Canada). Pangos has been called the next Steve Nash and you can see it in his game already. A solid point guard with excellent scoring and passing ability, he’ll have his choice from all major programs when the time comes.
  • Anthony Bennett (6′7/230, CF, Canada). For a sophomore Bennett is physically very mature. He’ll likely grow a little more and add some strength. Bennett can score inside and out and is a solid rebounder. He’s going to school at Mountain State Prep in West Virginia and I’m sure Bobby Huggins would love to sign him.
  • Malik Muller (6′2, CG, Germany). Muller is a strong combo-guard who can score in the lane as well as from range. He was strong enough to defend inside at times and can up with a block of a bigger player. Muller had 21 points and five rebounds in the contest.

We’ll be reporting on the featured All-American game is a separate post.

Pay Close Attention To The Defense This Spring

Mar 31, 2010
Picture

Drew Thurman (3:51 am)

Spring football is upon us, and all the Buckeye football news platforms are posting their previews. If you're like me at all, you have read all the posts on the "biggest questions" the team has going into spring.
Most have focused on Pryor's knee, the depth at running back, the No. 3 wide receiver, and the battle for both offensive tackle spots. None of these are bad questions, and will play an important part of the spring, but the focus needs to get placed on the defense.

While the offensive side of the ball will provide some exciting battles at positions of depth, the Buckeyes have very few worries on that side of the ball (as long as Pryor heals up).
The defense on the other hand, has some gaping holes that must be filled. Not only that, but the "D" lost its leadership in Coleman, Spitler and Worthington, which is vital to replace.

So, as spring practice gets underway, pay attention to the defense. How far this team goes truly lies in some of the questions on that side of the ball. Let's take a look...

Can the defensive line replicate the depth from a season ago?

Thaddeus Gibson, Doug Worthington, Lawrence Wilson, Robert Rose, and Todd Denlinger have all departed leaving a much less experienced unit on the defensive line. There is no doubt about it, last year's line was the core of the defense, and they took over in many games. That will be tough to duplicate in 2010, and I'm not sure it will happen.

The Buckeyes do return the overall best defensive lineman from last year in Cameron Heyward, along with familiar faces Nathan Williams, Dexter Larimore, and John Simon.
Yet, they will have to rely on many unproven and inexperienced players to add the depth they need to create a rotation. Guys like Solomon Thomas and Keith Wells will try to finally prove their worth, while youngsters Garrett Goebel, Adam Bellamy, Melvin Fellows, and all the 2010 newcomers will try to make a name for themselves. The spring will go a long way to prove how deep the defensive line will really be.
How well do the Buckeyes replace Kurt Coleman and Anderson Russell at safety?

Losing two guys with this much experience is an issue, especially because of a lack of depth behind them. On a positive note, Jermale Hines is back, and we all know he outplayed Anderson Russell last season.
Outside of him, it's wide open for who will step up at the other safety spot. Every expert has an opinion on who it will be, but the spring will truly show us who will win the battle.

Orhian Johnson is the most popular name at this point to take over the job, but there are a ton of other candidates. Under the radar veteran players like Nate Oliver and Zach Domicone cannot be forgotten, even though both will likely be a long shot.
Johnson's best competition will come from Jamie Wood and C.J. Barnett, though both are very unproven. The wild card will be Tyler Moeller, who will not be cleared for contact until the fall. That's a lot of names to watch, and similar to corner last spring, all of these guys will get the reps to prove themselves.

Who takes over at the SAM Linebacker?

Much like running back, the Buckeyes are incredibly deep at linebacker. While Austin Spitler's leadership will definitely be missed, there are plenty of guys that can step up in his place athletically.
The question is, who will it be?
While fans will be pulling for superstar recruit, Etienne Sabino, it appears as if Andrew Sweat may be the man to beat for the job. A lot of that will depend on how well he returns from his knee injury. Regardless, this should be an interesting battle to watch this spring and early fall.

How will the chemistry be for the defense in 2010?

Just as Ken Gordon pointed out earlier in the wee k , chemistry will be huge for this team in 2010. Thanks to the leadership on the team (and lack of star power) in 2009, everyone gelled very well. Gordon points out:

"I thought one of the most fascinating story lines of last season was how the Buckeyes came together as the year went on, and how so much of their success (particularly on defense) came despite not having very many star players."

Duplicating that in 2010 will be vital, especially on defense. The heart of the team last season was in the leadership of the defense. As I pointed out earlier, those guys are now gone. New leaders will have to step up, and hopefully another "team" dynamic can be created this season.

NBA Basketball Betting Picks for March 30th 2010

Mar 30, 2010

Below are free NBA basketball Picks and NBA predictions for March 30th 2010 from Touthouse.com handicappers. If you are looking for free NBA basketball picks on a daily basis or premium picks from our NBA basketball betting experts visit Touthouse.com each day.

Free NBA Pick: Oklahoma City vs. Philadelphia Under 195 (Dave Price)
This matchup has been an Unders machine as 7 of the last 9 overall have played to the Under and 5 of the last 6 in Philadelphia have found their way Under. Following a defeat, it has been very common for the Thunder to tighten the screws defensively in their next game. As a result, the Under is 6-1-1 in the Thunder’s last 8 games following a S.U. loss. Here is some evidence

Mar 29, 2010

In an earlier post I wrote that women cannot be trusted with secrets, because of the way that women communicate with each other.  Well here is some evidence to back it up.

Here is the full article by Lynda R Williams, yes a different name appears as the author as it is Brett R Williams that does the writing, but asked his wife to write this one, from Articlebase.com:

Men Bond Differently Than Women Do

By: Brett R. Williams

Being the only female in my household has taught me a few things about the male of the species. In some ways men are quite different from women. I grew up with only sisters for siblings and when my husband and I got married there were a few things I noticed about men. One thing that really stands out is that men bond by doing things together.

When I bond with my girlfriends we have deep conversations, share intimate details of our lives and spend a lot of time expressing our feelings. Here is a story to illustrate this point, one day my husband Brett and I were at another couple’s house for dinner. Barb and I began talking and inquiring about each other’s lives; while we noticed that our husbands had gone outside with a shovel and a hammer. Curious, we followed them to find them repairing a wooden post next to a gate. I turned to Barb and said, “Can you imagine if you came to my house and I asked you to help me mop my floor or repair a sink?” We laughed, but the lesson was not lost on me. The men were bonding by participating in this act together.

The act the men participate in is not always a mundane chore; it could be cooking the steaks or going surfing. The point is that they are doing something together. My husband Brett recently went motorcycle riding with a guy friend. I marveled at guy bonding time once again, as there was no possibility of any talking while riding motorcycles.

Now here is the really interesting thing from a woman’s point of view. The activity the men bond over is satisfying and bonding for them, even if it never leads to any meaningful conversation. It is the shared experience connects them.

Now I have a husband who is an excellent communicator, but if you find you are having trouble getting your husband to talk with you about important issues, I suggest that you plan an outing. It can be as simple as walking the dog around the neighborhood together. Giving men something to do may put them in a place where they feel they are bonding with you. Creating that feeling of connection on their terms may help them move into a place where they can talk with you and listen to you. Cardinals Continue To Battle Injuries

Mar 25, 2010

Strained obliques aren't anything new in the Cardinal clubhouse.  Woody Williams had one a few years back, and more recently Pujols and Chris Carpenter have had to deal with them.  The problem with obliques is they take a while to heal (unless you are Pujols, who does everything better than a normal human).

The hope is that it's a mild one, he takes a few days off, and is ready to go for the beginning of the season.  However, I'm a little doubtful it'll happen that way.  A catcher has to be able to throw out baserunners, get into the crouch, and move in different ways than anyone else on the field.  I can't imagine that if the oblique isn't completely healed, Yadi will be able to be back catching anytime soon.

Which poses quite a dilemma for the club.  It was noted at the Post-Dispatch that Yadi might be the second-most indispensable Cardinal, because his backups aren't nearly to his caliber (sorry, Jason LaRue and Matt Pagnozzi).  While LaRue especially can hold down the fort for a limited period of time, you don't want to see him out there on a regular basis.  If Bryan Anderson had developed the way that he looked like he was going to, this would have been a great opportunity to see what he could do.  However, being that Anderson only got one at-bat in camp this year, I think we can safely assume he's not in the picture, at least right now.

The Cardinals will have to wait and see with Yadi, but hopefully, no matter how much they need him, they don't rush him back.  Those obliques can flare up again at the slightest provocation.

Switching gears to those that throw to Molina, it looks like the honking worked.  Jaime Garcia is expected to be named the fifth starter by the club for the regular season.  Garcia has had a dominant spring and it would be hard to overlook his work.

This is in no way to short Kyle McClellan, though.  I know I was a little concerned about the switch from reliever for McClellan, but he's handled it like a champ, putting up numbers that, in any other camp, would have solidified his standing as the last starter.  However, with the bullpen still in a bit of flux, having the established hand like McClellan in there wouldn't hurt any.

You have to figure McClellan will get a lot of two-inning, three-inning looks this year.  If Garcia falters, is he the first in line to take over?  With a promotion of a Mitchell Boggs or an Adam Ottovino, whichever doesn't make the club, as the fill in for him?  If Rich Hill starts getting it together in Memphis, where does he fit in?  Still a lot of questions to be answered this season, though if Garcia keeps going like he has this spring, most of them aren't even going to come up.

After our interview with McClellan earlier in the spring, I'm not surprised to hear him saying things about whatever the team needs and it's just nice to be wanted and valued.  It's got to be tough when you want to be a starter, you pitched lights out, and it still wasn't enough.  I don't think he'll carry that into the season and he'll be just as effective a reliever as he's been a starter this spring.

If you've not seen it yet, Pujols is going to have his own "Got Milk?" ad.  We discussed on last night's UCB Radio Hour about Pujols's increased profile and whether he's becoming a household name in households that don't even follow baseball.  I'm not sure he's there yet, but he is working on it.

Time to finish up the Cardinal Approval Ratings with the last three on the ballot.  Last year, we were wondering exactly what Tony La Russa was thinking, moving outfielder Skip Schumaker to the infield.  Skip wasn't on last year's voting ballot, but after a year of solid work at second, it was time to get a feel for what Cardinal Nation thought about him.  On 66 ballots, Skip wound up with a respectable 81.1% mark.  The Schu man topped out at 99 and bottomed out at 50.

Mike Shannon was on last year's questions, racking up a 91.6% rating.  The long-time broadcaster was more of the same in 2009, but his approval rating dropped dramatically.  Shannon only got a 80.3% tally this year, with numerous zeros on the 64 ballots that named him.  It's possible that some put in zero instead of leaving it blank for no rating, but it could be that Shannon is more polarizing than I thought.

Adam Wainwright came into his own last year, challenging for the NL Cy Young.  That obviously helped him in the eyes of the respondents, as he wound up with a 95.6% mark, the second-highest on the club.  Over 15 different 100 ratings and the lowest on the 66 ballots was a 77.

Hope y'all enjoyed the approval ratings.  It was interesting to see the differences between this year and last.  No post tomorrow, as I'll be in getting carpal tunnel surgery.  They say I'll be able to type soon afterwards, so hopefully it won't be too long before we are talking Cardinals again!
