Players Championship Leaderboard 2025: Reviewing Top Day 1 Scorecards, Player Stats

Joe Tansey
Mar 13, 2025
THE PLAYERS Championship 2025 - Round One

Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are in contention after the first round of the 2025 Players Championship.

McIlroy put together a five-under 67 to finish within one shot of the leaders, while Scheffler sits at three-under.

Lucas Glover, J.J. Spaun and Camilo Villegas share the lead after 18 holes, but all of the focus on Friday, and for the rest of the tournament, will be on the top two players in the field.

Scheffler is the two-time reigning champion of the event at TPC Sawgrass, while McIlroy has one win and five other top-20 finishes at the highest-profile tournament before major season.

Players Championship Leaderboard

Lucas Glover (-6)

J.J. Spaun (-6)

Camilo Villegas (-6)

Min Woo Lee (-5)

Billy Horschel (-5)

Rory McIlroy (-5)

Full leaderboard can be found here on PGATour.com.

McIlroy hunted down the leaders with a tremendous back nine.

The 2019 Players Championship winner rolled in three straight birdies to begin the back nine and finished off his round with a birdie on the 18th hole.

The run up the leaderboard on the back nine was a welcome sight for McIlroy, who had an up-and-down start with three birdies and two bogeys on the front nine.

A more consistent second round could likely put McIlroy in the lead heading into the weekend.

McIlroy typically has not performed well on Friday at The Players. A 73 on Friday last year was his only bad round of the tournament. Six of his last seven second-round scorers at The Players have been in the 70s, including rounds of either 73 or 75 in the last four years.

Conversely, Scheffler has been excellent, no matter what the round has been, at TPC Sawgrass over the last nine rounds.

Scheffler's three-under 69 on Friday extended his run of nine consecutive rounds in the 60s at The Players.

If that consistency holds, Scheffler will not just be in the mix for his third Players title in row, but he could be towering over everyone else.

Scheffler first needs to chase down the trio of leaders on Friday.

Lucas Glover used four straight birdies from the 15th-18th hole to earn his spot at six-under. J.J. Spaun had a bogey-free afternoon to go along with his six birdies. Camilo Villegas started fast with five birdies in eight holes and then held on to his position through a topsy-turvy back nine in which he had three birdies and two bogeys.

Rickie Fowler (-4), Jordan Spieth (-2) and Collin Morikawa (-2) are among the notable players within a few shots of the lead.

Spieth had perhaps the most adventurous day of any golfer with two eagles, two birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey just on his first nine holes. He settled down with seven pars, a birdie and a bogey on his second nine.

USWNT vs. Japan: Top Storylines and Predictions for 2025 SheBelieves Cup

United States v Australia - 2025 SheBelieves Cup

The United States women's national team will try to win its eighth SheBelieves Cup title on Wednesday against Japan.

The Americans typically played well in the annual four-team tournament on home soil. The 2025 edition has featured a similar level of control from the USWNT.

Emma Hayes' side picked up two wins in the first two games over Colombia and Australia, as did Japan.

Wednesday's winner will come away with the tournament crown. The Americans have to win because Japan takes the event title with a draw due to a superior goal difference.

Top Storylines to Watch

Japan looked like the better team through two games at the SheBelieves Cup.

The Asian side posted four goals on both Colombia and Australia. Mina Tanaka scored a pair of goals each victory.

The USWNT only posted two goals in each of its victories over the last week, and that means it must win to come away with the tournament crown.

Ad Placeholder

Japan enters Wednesday with a +7 goal differential, which is four better than the Americans' number. Goal differential is the first tiebreaker to determine the champion.

The Americans won the last five SheBelieves Cup titles. Japan participated in three of those five tournaments and had a second-place finish in 2023.

The level of competition varies from year to year in the event, but it was clear from the start that Japan was the USWNT's toughest competition. Japan is the second-best team in the field according to the FIFA women's world rankings.

Ad Placeholder

Japan's squad, like the one the USWNT brought to the tournament, carries a mixture of experienced players and young stars looking to break through on the international level .

Mina Tanaka falls into the former category. She has 39 goals in 86 international appearances and will likely finish as the tournament's leading scorer.

The USWNT defense needs to slow down the Utah Royals forward in order to keep a clean sheet and let its young attack win the game for it.

Ad Placeholder

Emily Sonnett, Lindsey Heaps, Catarina Macario and Jenna Nighswonger all were rested in the USWNT's win over Australia. They should all start on Wednesday.

Heaps will be tasked with controlling the midfield, as always, to slow down the Japanese attacking flow. Nighswonger and Sonnett are part of a defensive unit that is the most experienced part of the USWNT squad.

Macario should have a heavy influence in attack. She has been directly involved in nine goals over her last six USWNT starts, per Opta.

Macario could be the USWNT's most important player on Wednesday because she can be the link between Heaps and a young attack that possesses four players with under 10 international appearances.

A win on home soil is always expected for the Americans, but this one will be tougher to produce given how well Japan's attack performed so far in the tournament.

United States v Colombia - 2025 SheBelieves Cup

The United States women's national team's second leg of the 2025 SheBelieves Cup takes place on Sunday against Australia.

Emma Hayes' side continued its strong defensive form from 2024 in the tournament opener with a 2-0 win over Colombia.

The USWNT now take on Australia, who lost its opening match by four goals to Japan.

Top Storylines and Preview

The USWNT started 2025 much like it played in 2024 with a multi-goal victory and a clean sheet.

Ad Placeholder

The key difference between Thursday's win and the triumphs of a year ago was the influx of new players into the lineup, especially in midfield and at forward.

Ally Sentnor of the NWSL's Utah Royals scored in her first international goal in her third appearance. Catarina Macario netted the other tally.

Lily Yohannes and Yazmeen Ryan, who have eight caps between them, also received starts in the win over Colombia.

Ad Placeholder

One of Hayes' goals for the SheBelieves Cup was to integrate some younger talent into the first team. So far, that goal has been accomplished with a ton of success.

The back line is where the majority of the experience lies. Jenna Nighswonger, Emily Sonnett and Emily Fox all started against Colombia.

The Americans did not allow any of Colombia's seven shots to reach the net occupied by Jane Campbell. That was a massive positive for the Americans, who are inexperienced in goal at the international level after Alyssa Naeher's retirement.

Ad Placeholder

The USWNT really didn't stray far from the foundation it built in Hayes' first year in charge, and that should be the case again for Sunday's clash with Australia in Glendale, Arizona.

Australia is coming off a 4-0 thumping against Japan. The Aussies entered the tournament with the third-best FIFA world ranking of the four participants. Colombia and Japan will meet on Sunday as part of the round-robin format.

Despite the big loss, Australia can still be a threat to the American defense with Caitlin Foord, Hayley Raso and Emily van Egmond, among others, on the tournament roster.

After all, this is a similar Australia team that pushed the USWNT in a 2-1 loss at the group stage of the Paris Olympics.

The USWNT will be challenged at points, but it is expected to win because of how strong the defense has looked for close to a year now.

Prediction

USWNT 2, Australia 0

United States Training - 2025 SheBelieves Cup

The United States women's national team kicks off play in the 2025 SheBelieves Cup on Thursday against Colombia.

Thursday's contest in Houston is part of an opening set of games for the 10th annual SheBelieves Cup. Japan and Australia are the other participants.

The USWNT has won seven of the nine SheBelieves Cups and it has won five in a row against some of the best teams from across the globe.

Emma Hayes' side for the competition is made up of a mixture of veterans, mostly in defense and midfield, and some players looking to take the next step in their international careers.

Game Preview

Thursday's clash with Colombia in Houston is the first game of 2025 for Emma Hayes' USWNT.

The Americans have eyes on the future with their roster for the SheBelieves Cup.

Only three players on the roster have more than 100 international appearances and just six in total have over 60 caps.

The majority of that experience comes in the back line through Crystal Dunn, Emily Sonnett, Tierna Davidson and Emily Fox.

Ad Placeholder

Lindsey Heaps will anchor the midfield and Lynn Biyendolo carries the most appearances and goals among the forward group.

The USWNT prided itself on defense in 2024, as it recorded 14 clean sheets, including one in the Gold Cup quarterfinals against Colombia.

The back line will be vital once again in 2025, and it could have some extra importance at the start of the SheBelieves Cup.

Ad Placeholder

Longtime starting goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher retired from international duty at the end of 2024. Jane Campbell and Mandy McGlynn, who have nine caps between them, will get the first shots to start in goal in 2025.

The combination of an experienced back line and Heaps controlling the midfield should help the Americans stay in control of Thursday's contest.

Colombia enters the SheBelieves Cup as the lowest-ranked team in the FIFA women's world rankings among the four participants at No. 21. The USWNT is No. 1, Japan is No. 8 and Australia is 15th.

Some of the best young American attacking talent will be on display to test the Colombian back line.

Jaedyn Shaw, who had six international goals in 2024, will be a focal point of the attack all tournament long, as should Catarina Macario and Alyssa Thompson.

The USWNT isn't as deep as forward for this specific tournament, but Shaw, Macario and Thompson are more than capable of carrying the team through three games.

Thursday's game is the first of three in six days for the USWNT. The SheBelieves Cup is a round-robin tournament in which the team with the most points at the end wins the competition.

Prediction

USWNT 2, Colombia 0

The first game of the day featured a clash between former UConn teammates Napheesa Collier and Katie Lou Samuelson. Collier took an early 8-0 lead over Samuelson, but the Phantom BC forward cut the deficit to 10-6 before the reigning WNBA Defensive Player of the Year closed out the win.

Shakira Austin's victory over Chelsea Gray represented the first upset of the day, as she was the No. 7 seed and Gray was the No. 2 seed entering the tournament. Austin remained a force in the paint throughout the clash, repeatedly finishing at the rim to secure her win.

Meanwhile, Kahleah Copper came from behind to take down Aliyah Boston. After Boston took an early 6-4 lead, Copper scored seven straight points to wrap up the contest.

Rhyne Howard struggled to find any type of scoring rhythm against Lexie Hull, but she emerged victorious due to a strong two-way performance. Howard picked up two blocks to go along with her 12 rebounds, clinching a five-point win with a turnaround shot off the glass.

Skylar Diggins-Smith didn't have any trouble with her shooting, heating up from behind the arc against Dearica Hamby. Diggins-Smith hit three of her six attempts from three-point territory.

She only held a 5-3 lead to start the game, but she quickly closed out the win with back-to-back triples.

Allisha Gray and Jordin Canada traded buckets to start their first-round battle, initially tied at 4-4. Gray pulled away by scoring twice inside the arc before nailing her first three-pointer of the contest to reach 11 points.

Rickea Jackson was unstoppable offensively, jumping out to an early 7-0 lead over Jackie Young before cruising to an 11-3 victory. Jackson shot 5-8 from the field and connected on one of her two three-point attempts.

The only shutout of the day occurred during a matchup involving two Mist BC teammates, Breanna Stewart and Aaliyah Edwards. Stewart, an Unrivaled co-founder, missed all three of her shot attempts while Edwards caught fire, shooting 5-7 from the field and 2-3 from behind the arc.

Tournament play will continue on Tuesday starting at 7 p.m. ET.
