NFL Insider Links Justin Fields to Jets After Aaron Rodgers' Exit amid Steelers Rumors

Joseph Zucker

Pittsburgh Steelers v Cleveland Browns

The New York Jets could make a run at quarterback Justin Fields with Aaron Rodgers out the door in the Big Apple, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Fowler reported Sunday on SportsCenter that there "could be something there if they're looking to go younger" regarding the Jets' QB search.

Head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey confirmed this week they told Rodgers he won't be back with the team for the 2025 season. The announcement left no doubt as to whether New York will have a new starting quarterback when it opens next year.

New York isn't on the clock until the No. 7 pick in the 2025 NFL draft. Landing one of Miami's Cam Ward or Colorado's Shedeur Sanders will almost certainly require a move up. Standing pat would mean reaching for the best of what's left in a generally weak QB class. Ward and Sanders are the only ones who crack the top 50 in Bleacher Report's big board.

The risk with Fields is obvious.

The 2021 first-round pick had an up-and-down three years with the Chicago Bears and got benched midway through 2024 with the Pittsburgh Steelers. While the Steelers went 4-2 with him as the starter, he averaged 110.6 passing yards per game.

Fields nonetheless wouldn't be a terrible choice for the Jets because he's unlikely to carry a steep cost. Spotrac values him at $6.4 million annually. Even if you double that figure, it's still pretty cheap for a starting QB.

The 25-year-old has a pretty high floor, too. For his career, he has completed 61.1 percent of his passes with 45 touchdowns to 31 interceptions.

Fields probably wouldn't be a long-term solution for the Jets, which is clearly what the franchise needs. He could, however, buy some time for a draft pick Glenn and Mougey identify as a better candidate to be that permanent answer.

Jets Insider: Davante Adams Will Be Released Because of $38.3M Salary Cap Hit for 2025

The New York Jets' reshuffling this offseason will also likely include moving on from wide receiver Davante Adams because he is too expensive.

ESPN's Rich Cimini wrote about the situation Sunday and said even though Adams is signed for two more years, "he won't have to request his release. It will happen because his 2025 cap charge is prohibitive—$38.3 million, none of it guaranteed.

"The only way to stay is to renegotiate the deal, and he probably prefers to be released, allowing him to test free agency for the first time.""

Cimini also noted the Jets would clear $29.9 million if they cut the receiver who previously said his future with the team depended on whether Aaron Rodgers would return, further indicating such a move will happen this offseason.

"I came here with the hopes that I wouldn't have to find a new home, so it's kind of bittersweet, I guess," Adams said. "It's cool to be able to control where you go, but I've done that [while] still under contract."

New York already announced it is moving on from Rodgers heading into the 2025 campaign, and the next natural step would be parting ways with some of his familiar targets in the passing game as well.

In addition to Adams, Cimini pointed out Allen Lazard has not produced enough "to justify his $13.2 million cap charge."

The Jets have a new head coach (Aaron Glenn) and general manager (Darren Mougey) and will have a new quarterback next season as well. That quarterback will at least have Garreett Wilson to throw to, but the front office will undoubtedly look to add a few more weapons if it is moving on from Adams and Lazard as well.

As for Adams, he can surely still be productive for another team even at this stage of his career.

The 32-year-old may not quite be the version of himself that led the NFL with 18 touchdown catches in 2020 as a member of the Green Bay Packers, but still posted 85 catches for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns last season.

He can be a veteran leader for a team looking for impact playmakers on the outside all while looking to add to a resume that features six Pro Bowl selections, three All-Pro First Team nods and six seasons with more than 1,000 receiving yards.

Jets Insider: Aaron Rodgers' Exit 'Greatly Increases the Chances' Garrett Wilson Stays

The end of the Aaron Rodgers era for the New York Jets means the Garrett Wilson era may just be getting started for the AFC East team.

ESPN's Rich Cimini reported Sunday that "Rodgers' departure greatly increases the chances of Garrett Wilson's return."

The update comes after the Jets announced Thursday they met with the veteran quarterback and informed him they were moving on heading into the 2025 campaign. It brought the end of a tumultuous two seasons that saw Rodgers appear in just one game because of an Achilles injury in 2023 and then go 5-12 as a starter in 2024.

As for Wilson, Cimini highlighted the apparent "tension" in the receiver's relationship with Rodgers that began "with heated conversations on the field in training camp" and then "bubbled up late in the season, fueling speculation that Wilson might ask for a trade."

Wilson took a step back in the offense after New York traded for Davante Adams, who previously played with Rodgers on the Green Bay Packers. Cimini noted Adams saw 112 overall targets and 21 red-zone targets compared to Wilson's 87 targets and 11 red-zone targets in 11 games together.

Keeping Wilson, 24, is more important to the Jets' long-term future than keeping the 41-year-old Rodgers.

After all, the Ohio State product has an Offensive Rookie of the Year and three straight seasons of more than 1,000 receiving yards to start his career after he was the No. 10 overall pick of the 2022 NFL draft.

He is a building block at a key offensive position and someone who can help ease the transition to the next quarterback in 2025 and beyond.

That will eventually require a new contract, as he is entering the final year of his deal before a club option in 2026. He has also outplayed his current contract that is set to pay him $1.1 million in base salary next season.

It seems like Wilson will be more likely to sign a long-term extension now that Rodgers is gone, which makes him something of a priority during what promises to be a busy offseason in the Big Apple.

Report: Jets Didn't Tell Aaron Rodgers to Stop Doing Pat McAfee Show Before Moving On

Aaron Rodgers' appearances on The Pat McAfee Show didn't factor into the New York Jets' decision to move on from him, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

"First of all, I don't think the Jets really cared that he was on The Pat McAfee Show honestly," Rapoport said on Thursday.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic initially reported Tuesday that New York wouldn't allow the veteran quarterback to go on the show if he were to stay with the team.

On Thursday, the Jets announced they were officially moving in a different direction at quarterback for the 2025 season.

Rodgers made regular appearances on The Pat McAfee Show throughout his tenure with the Jets. Andrew Marchand of the New York Post reported in Oct. 2023 that the four-time MVP was receiving "more than seven figures per year" to come on the show.

Rodgers' performance on the field seems to have contributed towards the Jets' decision-making process more than his television appearances, though.

The 41-year-old's first season in New York came to a swift end, suffering a torn Achilles on the opening drive of the year that kept him out for the rest of the team's 2023 campaign.

Rodgers was able to return in time for the start of the 2024 season, but he didn't look as sharp in the pocket compared to his days with the Green Bay Packers. He completed 63 percent of his throws for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions in 17 starts.

While retirement could also be an option for the signal-caller, Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reported on Sunday that "all signs point to him continuing to play" in 2025.

Rodgers will be searching for a change of scenery during the offseason, but his media presence reportedly wasn't a reason behind the Jets cutting ties with him.

NFL Draft 2025 Rumors: Jaxson Dart 'Intrigues the Jets' amid Aaron Rodgers Exit Buzz

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: JAN 02 TaxSlayer Gator Bowl - Duke vs Ole Miss

While veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers' departure from the New York Jets appears to be inevitable, the team is facing uncertainty under center once again this offseason.

ESPN's Rich Cimini suggested that the Jets could address the quarterback position in the 2025 NFL draft, as they appear to be interested in former Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart.

"Keep an eye on Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss. He intrigues the Jets," Cimini wrote.

Dart threw for 4,279 yards, 29 touchdowns and six interceptions during his senior season while also adding 495 rushing yards and three more scores. He improved his draft stock immensely thanks to his strong showing during Senior Bowl week, with some evaluators now projecting him to be the third quarterback off the board behind Colorado's Shedeur Sanders and Miami's Cam Ward.

ESPN's Field Yates predicted in his latest mock draft that Dart would be selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the No. 21 overall pick, which he admitted was a lofty projection.

"This projection represents a big rise up the board from where Dart currently ranks outside my top 32, but quarterbacks always have a chance to climb given positional value. Keep an eye on Dart here as we get closer to April," Yates wrote.

The Jets also have veteran backup Tyrod Taylor, who could stabilize the offense while Dart develops. Cimini also named quarterbacks Kirk Cousins and Justin Fields as "external options" for New York this offseason, so it wouldn't be a surprise if the team adds an experienced signal-caller before the draft.

Jermaine Johnson II Thanks Jets After Having 5th-Year Contract Option Exercised

After a torn Achilles cost him the majority of the 2024 season, New York Jets defensive end Jermaine Johnson II still received a show of good faith from the team.

Johnson announced Wednesday that the team picked up his option for the 2026 season:

The fifth-year option on Johnson's rookie contract is scheduled to pay him $13.4 million.

Jets general manager Darren Mougey said earlier this offseason that the team intended to exercise the fifth-year options for Johnson and fellow 2022 first-round draft picks Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson.

Johnson suffered his season-ending Achilles tear in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans and was limited to just four tackles in 2024. The lost season was especially disappointing considering he was coming off a productive second year in the NFL that earned him a selection to the Pro Bowl as an alternate.

Ad Placeholder

In 2023, Johnson played in all 17 games and recorded 55 total tackles, 7.5 sacks, seven passes defended, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and an interception that he returned for a 37-yard touchdown. The Jets are surely hoping that he will be able to return to that level of production when he's back at full strength.

Ad Placeholder

Johnson landed in New York as part of the team's star-studded 2022 draft class. Despite being considered one of the top defensive end prospects, he inexplicably tumbled down the draft board, and the Jets seized the opportunity to trade back into the first round to select him with the No. 26 pick.

Ad Placeholder

New York had already landed cornerback Sauce Gardner with the No. 4 pick and wide receiver Garrett Wilson at No. 10, and it followed the Johnson pick by selecting running back Breece Hall near the top of the second round, giving the team new franchise cornerstones on both sides of the ball.

Unfortunately, the influx of young talent has done little to turn the Jets' luck around. New York went 5-12 in 2024 and missed the playoffs for the 14th straight year, the longest active drought in any of the four major men's North American sports leagues. Head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas were both fired before the end of the season and were eventually replaced by former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and Mougey, who will now be tasked with ending the Jets' disappointing run of futility.

The new regime will have more tough decisions to make over the next few months, but committing to Johnson for another year is a positive step that should provide some optimism for a bright future in New York.

Report: Jets Told Aaron Rodgers He Couldn't Do Pat McAfee Show If He Were to Stay

The new regime for the New York Jets led by head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey reportedly had some conditions for veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers if he wanted to remain with the team.

The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported on Tuesday's episode of Scoop City that Rodgers' weekly appearances on The Pat McAfee Show were among the things that would have to change if he wished to continue his tenure in New York.

"I was told that when they had conversations with Aaron Rodgers about the future would look like, [they said,] 'If you're gonna be a part of this team, you're gonna attend all of training camp, you're not gonna do Pat McAfee interviews anymore,'" Russini said at the 28:10 mark.

Multiple reports surfaced over the weekend saying that Rodgers is unlikely to return to the Jets in 2025 if he chooses to continue his playing career. Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported that the four-time NFL MVP flew to New Jersey last week to meet with Glenn and Mougey and was informed that the team would part ways with him.

Rodgers is known for his unique interests outside of football, and he's used his interviews on The Pat McAfee Show to show different sides of himself. However, Russini explained that's not going to fly with the Jets as Glenn and Mougey try to rebuild the team's culture.

"This, to me, is Aaron Glenn getting control back. ... I think it's Aaron Glenn that's the one pushing for, 'I'm holding everyone accountable, and every single person on this team is going to be treated the same way,'" Russini said.

Jets' C.J. Mosley Defends Aaron Rodgers amid Rumored Exit: He Did Some Great Things

With Aaron Rodgers' tenure on the New York Jets reportedly coming to a close, linebacker C.J. Mosley reflected on the quarterback's time with the team.

"We tried to do something special," Mosley said on Fox 5 New York (h/t Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk). "Injuries took part in that, took away a lot of time. He did do some great things this year, getting his 500th touchdown. He was a leader no matter what when he came into the locker room, when he was with us this year. Nothing but respect for him to come back from the Achilles, 40-plus years old."

"I know the wins and losses can get in the way of a lot of things that you can accomplish, but there's no reason for him to leave New York with his head down 'cause I know he gave us his all," he added.

Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reported Sunday that Rodgers flew to New Jersey to meet with the Jets and was told that they were moving on from him. Glazer noted that "all signs" point towards the veteran quarterback playing in 2025, but it won't be for the same team that he spent the 2024 season with.

Expectations were high when New York acquired the four-time MVP in a 2023 trade with the Green Bay Packers, but his first season following the change of scenery ended abruptly.

Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles on the opening drive of the regular season, immediately putting an end to his 2023 campaign.

He recovered in time for the start of the 2024 season, suiting up in all 17 games. New York struggled though, finishing with a record of just 5-12 and missing the playoffs for the 14th consecutive season.

Rodgers put together an efficient year, even if he didn't look as sharp in the pocket compared to his days in Green Bay. He completed 63 percent of his throws for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions.

The 41-year-old reached 500 career touchdown passes in Week 18, becoming the fifth quarterback in NFL history to do so.

While the pairing between Rodgers and the Jets ultimately didn't work out, Mosley looked back on the signal-caller's time with the organization fondly.
