It looks like New York Jets wide receiver Davante Adams has the West Coast on his mind.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that Adams is "intrigued" by returning to play on the West Coast and that he would be "open" to team's like the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. Fowler also noted the San Francisco 49ers as a possible suitor.

"The Jets must address the future of receiver Davante Adams, whose $38.3 million cap hit is untenable," Fowler wrote. "A source told me Adams is intrigued by a return to the West Coast and would be open to potentially joining teams such as the Rams or Chargers -- if he gets released. I would put the 49ers in the conversation, too. Adams grew up in Northern California."

NFL Rumors: Davante Adams, Jets Haven't Been in Contact Since HC, GM Hires

It is a new era for the New York Jets, and it remains to be seen whether it will include Davante Adams.

"My understanding is the Jets have not been in contact with Davante Adams since the new general manager, Darren Mougey, and since the new head coach, Aaron Glenn, came in and took over," NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.

New York acquired Adams via trade from the Las Vegas Raiders last season with the hope it would inspire a turnaround down the stretch, but it did no such thing. Now it is facing a decision with a 32-year-old receiver who is set to make $35.6 million in base salary during the 2025 campaign with his current contract.

"They are not going to carry a $36-million cap number for a 30-something receiver," Rapoport said. He explained that the Jets could "massage the cap number" by automatically converting it or simply move on from Adams.

The Aaron Rodgers factor is another part of these discussions, as it remains to be seen whether the 41-year-old is part of the team's future plans.

Rodgers and Adams are friends who also played together on the Green Bay Packers, and the latter might not even be interested in returning to New York if the future Hall of Fame signal-caller isn't there as well.

Adams is still effective and posted 85 catches for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns in 14 games during the 2024 campaign. However, the Jets have a number of holes to address on the roster after their ninth consecutive losing season, and having that much money tied up in a veteran pass-catcher is not a wise use of limited resources.

It would be anything but surprising if they move on this offseason, and the report there hasn't been any contact indicates that might be the plan.

Jets News: Texans' Bobby Slowik Reportedly Set for HC Interview After NFL Playoff Win

Chicago Bears v Houston Texans

The New York Jets will interview Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik on Thursday as part of their coaching search, according to CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones.

The Jets will speak with Slowik virtually as he's preparing for Saturday's Divisional Round matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Jets, who are also evaluating general manager candidates, have cast a wide net as they seek a permanent replacement for Robert Saleh. Rex Ryan, Ron Rivera, Aaron Glenn and Vance Joseph are among the people they've interviewed, and there are others with whom they've requested to meet.

Slowik was one of the hotter names during the 2024 hiring cycle after Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud was a Pro Bowler and the Offensive Rookie of the Year. His stock might've taken a small hit, though, with Houston's offense going backward.

The Texans ranked 22nd in yards (319.7) and 19th in points (21.9) during the regular season. Stroud also failed to match his 2023 production, throwing for 3,727 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and ranked 24th in QBR (50.1), per ESPN.com.

In November, the Houston Chronicle's Jonathan M. Alexander answered a fan question about Slowik's status and w/hether he could be fired, and the Texans insider didn't dismiss the idea outright.

"There are people in the organization who, at this point, don't quite know what Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans will do this offseason," Alexander wrote. "But make no mistake about it, some tough conversations will be had."

This time last year, Jets fans probably would've been thrilled to see the team hire Slowik. Now, his arrival would probably be met with some consternation.

Jets Rumors: Lions' Tanner Engstrand to Be Hired as OC After Nick Caley Rejected Job

The Detroit Lions are reportedly losing another coach.

According to Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz, Lions passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand will be the New York Jets' next offensive coordinator.

Connor Hughes of SNY first reported that the Jets were expected to hire Engstrand as their new offensive coordinator. Engstrand is certainly a familiar name for new Jets head coach Aaron Glenn after their shared time on Dan Campbell's staff in Detroit.

Hughes noted New York attempted to hire Los Angeles Rams tight ends coach and passing game coordinator Nick Caley as its "top option" but was rejected.

The Jets apparently weren't the only ones interested in Caley, who Hughes pointed out will "have other options." He also reported New York will keep wide receiver coach Shawn Jefferson after blocking interview requests for him around the league.

As for Engstrand's departure, this is another loss for the Lions staff.

Glenn became the head coach of the Jets, while offensive coordinator Ben Johnson became the head coach of the division-rival Chicago Bears.

Elsewhere, defensive line coach Terrell Williams went to the New England Patriots as DC, wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El went to the Bears in the same position, assistant quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett went to Chicago as the quarterbacks coach and tight ends coach Steve Heiden became the offensive line coach of the Jets.

It is quite the turnover for a franchise that has turned itself around under head coach Dan Campbell and become one of the league's best teams.

New York is looking for a similar turnaround with Engstrand as its offensive coordinator.

The 2024 season was his fifth on Detroit's staff and second as the passing game coordinator. The Lions finished his first season in the role second in the league in passing yards on the way to the NFC Championship Game and his second season in the role second in the league again on the way to the conference's No. 1 seed.

Players such as Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta thrived under his coaching, and he will look to help the Jets' playmakers unlock similar production.

There are still a number of questions to be answered in New York, not the least of which is will Aaron Rodgers be back at quarterback, but the team at least knows who the O.C. will be after this move.

NFL News: Steve Wilks, Jets Reportedly Agree to DC Contract on Aaron Glenn's Staff

Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks is reportedly heading back to the NFL.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Wednesday that the New York Jets are hiring Wilks as their new defensive coordinator. He will join Aaron Glenn's staff as the new head coach attempts to turn things around in New York in 2025.

Glenn will surely be involved on the defensive side of the ball considering he was the defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions the last four seasons, but Wilks is an experienced and veteran leader with plenty of stops on his resume.

He was the head coach of the Cardinals for just one season in 2018 but was fired after the team went 3-13. He was also 6-6 as the interim head coach of the Carolina Panthers during the 2022 campaign.

In addition to collegiate stops at Illinois State, Appalachian State, East Tennessee State, Bowling Green, Missouri and Notre Dame, Wilks was the secondary coach for Washington, defensive backs coach for the Chicago Bears, defensive backs coach for the San Diego Chargers, defensive backs coach and D.C. for the Panthers, D.C. for the Cleveland Browns and D.C. for the San Francisco 49ers throughout his lengthy career.

Wilks was most recently in San Francisco for the 2023 campaign as the team's D.C. as it advanced all the way to the Super Bowl before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs.

San Francisco finished third in the league in points allowed and eighth in yards allowed that season but still chose to fire him after the Super Bowl loss.

The Jets would surely love a defense to perform at that level.

They were 5-12 during the 2024 campaign with a defense that finished 20th in the league in points allowed. Anything but a significant improvement would be a surprise given the decision to go with a defensive-minded head coach in Glenn, and now Wilks will look to help bring in that improvement during yet another stop in his career.

One of Aaron Glenn's top targets for his coaching staff with the New York Jets will have a formal interview with the club.

Per Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz, former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks will meet with the Jets about their defensive coordinator position on Wednesday.

After Glenn was confirmed to be the Jets' choice as their new head coach, Schultz reported on Jan. 22 that Wilks was believed to be a top target for defensive coordinator.

Glenn, who spent the past four seasons as defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, confirmed on Monday during his introductory press conference that he won't be calling defensive plays in 2025:

"I want to be the best head coach you can find. For me to do that, I think I need to manage the game, so I'll have my OC and my DC, those guys will be calling the plays. When it comes to staffing, that's a work in progress. I'm looking for the best coaches that are going to help us succeed. And I do believe coaches are the start of your culture. So every coach will be looked at to make sure they can bring that. I've always taught that it's not coachability, it's compatibility. I want to make sure the coaches we bring in are compatible."

Wilks will be the second defensive coordinator candidate the Jets interview on Wednesday. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported they are also meeting with former Tennessee Titans defensive backs coach Chris Harris.

The 55-year-old Wilks spent 2024 in college as a volunteer advisor for Charlotte's football team. His most recent job in the NFL was as defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers during the 2023 season.

Wilks has an extensive resume dating back to 1995 when he entered the coaching ranks as a defensive coordinator at Johnson C. Smith. He spent 11 seasons in college before breaking into the NFL in 2006 with the Chicago Bears as their defensive backs coach.

In addition to his work as an assistant coach, Wilks has 28 games of experience as a head coach in the NFL. He went 3-13 in his lone season with the Arizona Cardinals in 2018, then went 6-6 as interim head coach for the Carolina Panthers in 2022.

The Jets defense took a significant step back in 2024 from where they had been the previous two years. They ranked 20th in points allowed and gave up more than 20 points in 11 of 17 games. They only had 15 games allowing more than 20 points in 2022 and 2023 combined.

Woody Johnson Says 'I Have to Be a Better Owner' and Need Patience After Jets Rumors

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is taking accountability for how things have gone for the organization in recent years under his stewardship.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Johnson admitted "I have to be a better owner" for the Jets to reach the level of success they hope to achieve.

"I'm trying to be better," he said. "And I do self scout, and a lot of people scout for me. … I think I did it today by introducing the two leaders of this team, the second is to — I've got to have patience. I've got to let them evolve in these positions, which I think they will. I think it'll be quick, but I think they'll evolve."

Monday marked a significant date for the franchise because it was the introductory press conference for new general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn.

One of the big decisions that Johnson made two years ago was acquiring Aaron Rodgers in a trade with the Green Bay Packers. Now, Rodgers' future in New York is very much up in the air.

Johnson did note he would not do anything to influence whatever decision Mougey and Glenn make regarding Rodgers.

"They've got to take a look at how the team's composed and what they think they need and put all that together," Johnson said. "No, I'm not going to voice my opinion. That's up to them."

Johnson's tenure as Jets owner, which began in 2000, has left a lot to be desired. They've frequently been in a state of dysfunction on and off the field, resulting in them holding the longest playoff drought of any team in the four major North American men's pro sports leagues.

The best thing an owner of any sports team can do is get out of the way and let the football people make the decisions. You'll still get the glory if your team is successful because almost always the first person to be presented with the Lombardi Trophy at the Super Bowl is the owner.

It will be tough-sledding for the Jets to end their playoff drought in 2025 with the Buffalo Bills likely to still be very good and the New England Patriots presumably improving around Drake Maye with new head coach Mike Vrabel.

If Johnson empowers Mougey and Glenn to do their jobs without fear of someone looking over their shoulders, the Jets could improve on their 5-12 record from this season.

Jets' Woody Johnson Would 'Absolutely' Welcome Aaron Rodgers Back; Up to HC, GM

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson made it clear that he's planning on staying out of the way while the new regime makes a decision on the future of star quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Johnson told reporters following Monday's press conference introducing new head coach Aaron Glenn and new general manager Darren Mougey that they will be the ones making the decision on Rodgers and he would "absolutely" welcome the 41-year-old back if that's what they decide:

Glenn said during his introductory statement that he's already had some communication with Rodgers:

Rodgers has made it clear that he is contemplating retirement this offseason. If he chooses to return for a 21st year in the NFL, there's no guarantee that he would want to remain in New York following the team's tumultuous 2024 campaign.

Despite entering the year with Super Bowl aspirations, the Jets went 5-12 and missed the playoffs for the 14th straight year. Head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas were both fired before the end of the year, and there were multiple indications of a disconnect between Rodgers and Johnson.

ESPN's Rich Cimini reported that Johnson made a suggestion to bench Rodgers early in the season. One source said the suggestion was "said in jest in a provocative nature," but another source said Johnson "appeared to be serious." During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show late last month, Rodgers admitted that he was not close with Johnson and he had more of a relationship with his brother, Jets vice chairman Christopher Johnson.

Still, it sounds like Johnson has turned a new leaf in his ownership style. He admitted to reporters on Monday, "I have to look in the mirror and be a better owner."

If Johnson stays true to his word, Glenn and Mougey will have a strong chance to lead the Jets back to prominence over the next few years.

Aaron Glenn: 'We're the Freaking New York Jets and We're Built for This S--t'

Newly hired New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn made a declaration during his introductory press conference on Monday that should have Jets fans excited about the future.

Per Connor Hughes of SNY, Glenn acknowledged that the process of turning the franchise around won't be easy before adding, "But we're the freaking New York Jets, and we're built for this s--t."

A former NFL cornerback, Glenn was the Jets' first-round pick in the 1994 NFL draft and spent the first eight years of his playing career with the franchise. New York also gave him his first off-the-field job as a personnel scout in 2012, so being hired as head coach represents a full-circle moment for him.

However, taking over the Jets is no small task, as Glenn is now at the helm of a team that has the league's longest active playoff drought at 14 straight years. New York has significant decisions to make this offseason, such as whether to retain star quarterback Aaron Rodgers if he chooses to continue his playing career. Glenn and newly hired general manager Darren Mougey will have to be in lockstep as they try to end New York's run of futility, but they both made it clear on Monday that they're ready for the challenge.

Luckily for Glenn, he already has extensive experience in turning losing franchises into title contenders. As a player, he endured a 1-15 season with the Jets in 1996 before the team finished 12-4 just two years later. When he was hired as defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions in 2021 under head coach Dan Campbell, the team went 3-13-1 in his first year before putting together three straight winning seasons with back-to-back NFC North titles in the past two years.

By the end of Monday's press conference, it was clear that Glenn displayed the energy and leadership the Jets will need in order to turn things around quickly and return to playoff contention.
