Dolphins' Raheem Mostert Out vs. Bills with Chest Injury; De'Von Achane's Status TBD

Miami Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert will sit out Thursday's home game against the Buffalo Bills, head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters on Wednesday.

Mostert missed practice on Monday and Tuesday due to a chest injury.

McDaniel said the team "will see how it plays out" with running back De'Von Achane, who missed practice this week with an ankle injury.

Mostert and Achane combined for 16 carries, 33 rushing yards and a touchdown during last week's season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. If either is absent, the Dolphins are likely to give more carries to Jeff Wilson Jr.

Miami could also turn to rookie Jaylen Wright, who has yet to make his NFL debut.

McDaniel was asked by reporters whether Mostert would be out for a single game, or if there was a risk he would be sidelined for future contests.

"Closer to the former but not ruling out the latter," McDaniel said, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

McDaniel said that Mostert suffered the injury early in Sunday's win over the Jaguars, per Jackson.

The Dolphins head coach added that Mostert attempted to play through the injury. He ended the game having rushed six times for nine yards, gaining six of those nine on a single carry and adding two catches for 10 yards.

"He was working through it during the game. I've learned he might be the last guy I will ask if he's good," McDaniel said, per Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald. "His injury, not many people play with."

McDaniel continued, per Kelly: "My sense is, it's not something that time won't take care of. However, I'm not going to make him worse by setting forth my expectations of when he'll play again."

Mostert earned his first career Pro Bowl nod last season while leading the NFL with 18 rushing touchdowns. The Dolphins will want to be careful with his recovery as they look for the running back to help them on a long postseason run.

Achane returned to Dolphins practice on Wednesday in a non-contact jersey, per ESPN's Marcel Louis-Jacques. The second-year back ran for 25 yards and a touchdown, in addition to making seven catches for 75 yards, in Week 1.

The win marked the first time since the 2022 postseason that no Dolphins player recorded at least 30 rushing yards in a game, per NFL.com's Kevin Patra. Miami's run game could remain similarly restricted if Achane is limited on Thursday with Mostert sidelined.

Tua Tagovailoa: Narrative Dolphins Can't Beat Bills Will Stay 'Until We Do Beat Them'

The Buffalo Bills have won the AFC East in each of the last four seasons, and Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa knows the division runs through Josh Allen and Co. until they can do something about it.

"That's gonna be what's written out there until we do something about that, that's going to be the narrative, that we can't beat the Bills," he told reporters Tuesday ahead of Thursday's matchup against Buffalo.

"Until we do beat them, and beat them consistently, none of that's going to change. We have an opportunity to do that this year, we have an opportunity to do that this Thursday."

It hasn't been pretty for Tagovailoa against the Bills.

According to Statmuse, he has a 1-6 record in head-to-head matchups in his career and completed 61.1 percent of his passes for six total touchdowns and seven total interceptions across those contests.

Thursday is a golden opportunity to change those stats and the overall narrative, especially since a November game at Buffalo figures to be more challenging with potentially more difficult weather conditions.

Unfortunately for the Dolphins, running backs Raheem Mostert and De'Von Achane are both dealing with injuries heading into Thursday's showdown.

Tagovailoa would face more pressure to keep the offense rolling if one or both of them are out, but there are far worse things than relying on an aerial attack that features Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Both receivers went over 100 yards in the season-opening win over the Jacksonville Jaguars and will look to do the same against the Bills.

That would certainly be one way to help change the narrative.

Tyreek Hill Cited with Careless Driving, Seatbelt Violation After Traffic Stop

Miami-Dade Police cited Tyreek Hill for careless driving and a safety belt violation during his traffic stop, according to ESPN's Jeff Darlington, writing in the citation's notes that Hill was allegedly driving what officers deemed to be a "visual estimation" of 60 mph.

After pulling Hill over, officers removed him from his vehicle, handcuffed him and laid him on the pavement face down.

The Miami-Dade Police Department immediately commenced an investigation into the situation and released body-cam footage.

One of the detaining officers, Danny Torres, was placed on administrative leave and remains under that designation as the Miami-Dade PD's Internal Affairs investigation continues, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network noted.

Hill's teammate, Calais Campbell, was also handcuffed after pulling over upon seeing Hill being detained. Dolphins' tight end Jonnu Smith was also at the scene.

The Dolphins described the officers' actions as "overly aggressive and violent conduct" in a statement.

"It is both maddening and heartbreaking to watch the very people we trust to protect our community use such unnecessary force and hostility towards these players, yet it is also a reminder that not every situation like this ends in peace, as we are grateful this one did," the team added.

A number of Hill's teammates decried the actions of the officers at the scene.

"Excessive force on a Black man, that's not uncommon. It's a very common thing in America," safety Jevon Holland told reporters. "So I think that needs to be addressed at a countrywide level."

"Obviously we all see the police brutality that goes on in this country, and when you see your teammate possibly being part of that, you're doing everything in your power to help him," Smith added

Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, called the situation "heartbreaking, upsetting and uncalled for," while Hill's legal team said it was "exploring all legal remedies" in a statement, describing the Miami-Dade PD's actions as "excessive."

The South Florida Police Benevolent Association, the union representing the Miami-Dade officers, said in its own statement that Hill was "uncooperative" and that officers handcuffed Hill "pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety."

Bodycam Video of Tyreek Hill Being Detained Before Dolphins Game Released by Police

Bodycam footage from Miami-Dade Police detaining Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill when he was on his way to the stadium for Sunday's game was released Monday.

The Sun Sentinel shared some of the footage:

The video shows Hill asking the officer to "give me my ticket so I can go" because he was going to be late to the game. The officer then becomes upset when Hill rolls his window up and then tells the receiver to "get out of the car right now. We're not playing this game"

That is when police physically force him out of the car and push him to the ground with multiple officers holding him down. Hill can be heard telling someone on the phone he is getting arrested.

"When we tell you to do something, you do it," an officer then says.

TMZ Sports shared a longer cut of the footage in which Hill tells the officers he just underwent surgery on his knee as one of them is forcing him down to the sidewalk.

Dolphins defensive lineman Calais Campbell also makes an appearance, and police yell at him to get back before threatening to handcuff him.

As ESPN's Jeff Darlington shared, Campbell was eventually handcuffed and told he was being arrested:

The Dolphins released a statement after the footage was released:

"We are saddened by the overly aggressive and violent conduct directed towards Tyreek Hill, Calais Campbell and Jonnu Smith by police officers before yesterday's game," it said, in part. "It is both maddening and heartbreaking to watch the very people we trust to protect our community use such unnecessary force and hostility towards these players, yet it is also a reminder that not every situation like this ends in peace, as we are grateful this one did.

"'What if I wasn't Tyreek Hill?' is a question that will carry with resounding impact."

The release of the footage comes after Steadman Stahl, the president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association, released the following statement, per ESPN:

"Before the Dolphins game yesterday, an incident occurred where Tyreek Hill was placed in handcuffs before being released. First, to be clear, at no time was he ever under arrest. He was briefly detained for officer safety, after driving in a manner in which he was putting himself and others in great danger.

"Upon being stopped, Mr. Hill was not immediately cooperative with the officers on scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs. Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore redirected to the ground.

"Once the situation was sorted out within a few minutes, Mr. Hill was issued two traffic citations and was free to leave."

Darlington reported in that ESPN story that Hill was cited for careless driving and a seat belt violation. Campbell was not cited for anything despite being detained.

Hill's attorney, Julius Collins, said he is "exploring all legal remedies" after "excessive" force was used, while Miami Dade Police Department director Stephanie V. Daniels said one of the officers was "placed on administrative duties while the investigation is conducted."

Hill was asked about the interaction after the game.

"Right now, I'm still trying to put it all together ... I still don't know what happened," he said. "But I do want to use this platform to say, 'What if I wasn't Tyreek Hill?' Worst-case scenario, you know? ... Everybody has bad apples in every situation, but I want to be able to use this platform to figure out a way to flip this and make it a positive on my end and Miami-Dade and do something positive for the community.

"It's hard. I don't want to bring race into it, but sometimes it gets kind of iffy when you do. What if I wasn't Tyreek Hill? Lord knows what those guys would have done. I just wanted to make sure I was doing what my uncle always told me to do whenever you're in a situation like that—put your hands on the steering wheel and just listen."

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel also discussed it during his postgame press conference.

"It's been hard for me not to find myself more upset the more I think about it," McDaniel said. "And that's because of my teammates and trying to put myself in that situation that they've described, emotionally ... I think the thing that f--ks me up, honestly, to be quite frank is knowing that I don't know exactly what that feels like."

Hill ended up playing in the game, which was a 20-17 victory over the Jaguars.

He finished with seven catches for 130 yards and one touchdown and notably placed his hands behind his back while he was celebrating the score.

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill pushed back against the statement made by the union representing the Miami-Dade police officers who pulled him over and handcuffed him before Sunday's matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars, which suggested he wasn't cooperative with authorities.

Hill said during an interview with Lester Holt on the NBC Nightly News that he did everything asked of him:

The full statement from Steadman Stahl, the president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association, read as follows:

Before the Dolphins game yesterday, an incident occurred where Tyreek Hill was placed in handcuffs before being released. First, to be clear, at no time was he ever under arrest. He was briefly detained for officer safety, after driving in a manner in which he was putting himself and others in great danger. Upon being stopped, Mr. Hill was not immediately cooperative with the officers on scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs. Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore redirected to the ground. Once the situation was sorted out within a few minutes, Mr. Hill was issued two traffic citations and was free to leave.

Hill's head coach, Mike McDaniel, became emotional at his press conference on Monday while discussing the incident:

Hill told Holt that he believes the situation could have escalated to even greater levels were he not a famous professional athlete.

"If I wasn't Tyreek Hill, Lord knows, I probably would have been like, worst-case scenario, I would have been shot or would have been locked up," he said. "... Put behind bars, you know, for a simple speeding ticket.

"And that's crazy that officers would take it, you know, to that level."

Hill, who was pulled over near Hard Rock Stadium for allegedly speeding, was handcuffed by officers and forced to lay on the ground face down during his detainment.

Miami-Dade Police Department director Stephanie V. Daniels previously noted that an investigation into the situation was underway and that one of the officers involved had been placed on administrative leave. She also said Monday in a statement that the body-cam footage from the situation would be released publicly:

In our commitment to transparency and maintaining public trust, we are releasing the body-worn camera (BWC) footage related to the recent incident involving Hill. While standard protocol is to release body cam footage after the internal review has concluded, the available body cam footage—a combined 105 minutes, 33 seconds—is being released the day following the incident to reinforce the Department's commitment to keeping the public informed. The department is committed to conducting a thorough, objective investigation into this matter, and we will continue to update the public on the outcome of that process.

Some of that footage can be seen below:

"Mr. Hill's legal team is exploring all legal remedies that may be available to Mr. Hill as we believe that the officers' actions on September 8, 2024 were excessive," the star wideout's attorney, Julius Collins, said in a statement on Monday.

Dolphins' Calais Campbell Says He Was Handcuffed During Tyreek Hill Detainment

Miami Dolphins defensive lineman revealed during his postgame interview on Sunday that he was also put in handcuffs when teammate Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic stop and detained earlier in the morning.

"Actually they put handcuffs on me too, and I was like, 'What is going on?'" he said. "I didn't understand what the issue was. For him to put handcuffs on me, I felt some type of way. But that just goes to show how resilient we are. We didn't let that stop us."

"I saw Tyreek getting apprehended, I just wanted to make sure everything was OK, trying to deescalate the situation." he continued. "Officer felt some kind of way, put handcuffs on me, and I had to tell myself, 'Don't let this get you down. Get focused, stay locked in and do what you prepared to do so you can go out here and win a ballgame."

Campbell also told reporters he believed the officers were using "excessive force" with Hill and their handling of the situation "was a bit extreme"

Hill's detainment is being investigated by the Miami-Dade Police Department, and one of the arresting officers has already been placed on administrative leave:

"Apparently he got a ticket for a moving violation entering the stadium," Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN's Jeff Darlington before Sunday's matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars. "How things escalated into the situation they were in—handcuffs, and being held on the ground with police—is mind-boggling to me. I'm deeply concerned by that, very troubled, we will be looking into it. We will be investigating. We will look out for Tyreek. But I'm not going to make any allegations at this time."

Hill said he didn't know why officers removed him from his vehicle and handcuffed him after being pulled over.

"No idea. It's crazy. No idea. I wasn't disrespectful because my mom didn't raise me that way," he told reporters. "Didn't cuss. Did none of that. I'm still trying to figure it out... Don't be disrespectful."

Hill added that he wants to be a police officer one day and was surprised by how Sunday's incident played out.

"All across the world, you see it," he said. "I don't want to bring race into it. But sometimes it's kind of iffy when you do. What if I wasn't Tyreek Hill? Lord knows what those guys would have did. I was making sure I did what my uncle told me to do if you're ever in situations like that. Put your hands on the steering wheel, just listen."

Tyreek Hill Says He Has 'No Idea' Why He Was Detained by Police Before Dolphins Game

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill told reporters he has "no idea" why he was detained by police prior to Sunday's win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

When told one of the Miami-Dade Police Department officers who had detained him had been subsequently put on administrative leave, Hill said, "That should tell you everything you need to know."

"Wasn't disrespectful because my mom didn't raise me that way. Didn't cuss," Hill said, per CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones.

Hill added: "Still trying to figure it out."

The Dolphins announced prior to the game that Hill had been "briefly detained" following a "traffic incident" one block away from Hard Rock Stadium.

Hill told NFL on CBS' Melanie Collins after Sunday's season opener that his detainment was "quite a surprise."

Hill made seven catches for 130 yards and a touchdown in the 20-17 win.

ESPN's Marcel Louis-Jacques wrote that "sources told ESPN's Jeff Darlington that Hill was stopped for speeding and then got into a verbal altercation with police and was subsequently placed in handcuffs."

According to Darlington, Dolphins defensive tackle Calais Campbell said he was also detained by police "while trying to deescalate the situation."

Campbell was also handcuffed and cited with disobeying a direct order, per Darlington.

Hill told Collins that he left work expecting to go to work and prepare for the season opener.

"Little did I know, that was quite a surprise on the way," Hill said. "But you know what, at the end of the day, I got a job to do, and my job is to come inside of this stadium and be great."

The Dolphins receiver declined to offer specifics as to what had happened during his detainment.

"I'm not going to comment on any of that," Hill said. "Whenever stuff come out ... we just gonna let bygones be bygones. Move on and learn from it. That's it."

Video of the incident appeared to show four officers detaining and handcuffing Hill and Campbell on the ground outside Hard Rock Stadium.

The Miami-Dade Police Department later announced that "one of the officers involved in the incident has been placed on administrative duties" amid an ongoing investigation into the incident.

Hill referenced being handcuffed in his celebration after connecting with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for an 80-yard touchdown against the Jaguars.

The NFL has "been in contact with the Dolphins" about the incident but has not yet issued a comment, per Pelissero.

Miami Dolphins star wideout Tyreek Hill was detained following a traffic stop ahead of Sunday's matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars, though he was ultimately cleared to play.

He made his usual impact, which included an 80-yard touchdown reception. After that long score, Hill celebrated by putting his hands behind his back as though he was being handcuffed, and Jaylen Waddle ran over with the "key" to finish the celly.

Hill posted the following after the game, a win for Miami:

In a statement released before the game, the Dolphins noted that Hill "was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium and briefly detained by police. He has since been released. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support. Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived to the stadium and will be available for today's game."

Miami-Dade Police Department director, Stephanie V. Daniels, said the matter was being internally reviewed and later announced that one of the officers involved was being placed on administrative leave:

It was a bizarre situation before Miami's opening game of the 2024 season, and it didn't take long for Hill to devise a celebration that seemed to directly reference and mock it.

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was briefly detained by police prior to Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Drew Rosenhaus, Hill's agent, told ESPN's Adam Schefter the eight-time Pro Bowler was stopped by authorities for a "driving violation."

Eyewitnesses shared photos and video from the scene:

Speaking to ESPN's Jeff Darlington (via Safid Deen of USA Today), Rosenhaus said he was "deeply concerned" with police placing Hill in handcuffs. He added that "we will be looking into it, we will be investigating this."

One of the officers involved was placed on administrative leave, per Miami-Dade Police:

The South Florida Police Benevolent Association issued a statement on Monday:

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and others noted how a similar scene played out outside of Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, in May.

Golf fans awoke to the news of Scottie Scheffler's arrest prior to the second round after he was stopped by Louisville police while trying to enter the club. Scheffler was released and played as scheduled, and prosecutors eventually dropped the charges against him.

Hill is in his third season with the Dolphins. He was an All-Pro for the fifth time in 2023 after catching 119 passes for an NFL-high 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns. He had seven catches for 130 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's win over Jacksonville.

NFL Rumors: Jalen Ramsey, Dolphins Agree to $72.3M Contract; Becomes Highest-Paid CB

Jalen Ramsey is reportedly now the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Cameron Wolfe reported Friday the Miami Dolphins and Ramsey agreed to a new three-year, $72.3 million deal that reset the cornerback market with an average annual value of $24.1 million per year.

ESPN's Adam Schefter put the deal into perspective:

Ramsey was previously signed through the 2025 season, so this means he will be in Miami for the foreseeable future as he looks to help lead the team to playoff success.

The Florida State product was the No. 5 overall pick of the 2016 NFL draft and started his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jacksonville traded him to the Los Angeles Rams during the 2019 season, and the NFC West team traded him to Miami ahead of the 2023 campaign.

He was solid when he was on the field during his first season with the Dolphins and finished with 22 tackles, five passes defended and three interceptions in 10 games. However, he missed seven games after undergoing offseason meniscus surgery.

Injuries are once again a concern heading into the 2024 season, as he is dealing with a hamstring setback that has left his availability for Sunday's opener against the Jaguars up in the air.

But he is still showing leadership.

"I've never been prouder of a player not practicing, like honestly. No puffery," head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters. "He's just making me proud because he knows how important he is to this team and what he's looking to accomplish with the team as a captain. … I know he's doing everything he can today and there weren't any setbacks today."

Now Ramsey can work toward returning with a new deal under his belt.

From Miami's perspective, it locked up one of the best cornerbacks of his generation at 29 years old. Ramsey's resume includes a Super Bowl title with the Rams, three first-team All-Pro selections and seven consecutive Pro Bowl nods.

There are still some concerns after he missed seven games last year and saw his Pro Football Focus grade drop from 86.4 in 2022 to 66.4 in 2023, but Ramsey's ceiling remains among the league's best for a team that is in win-now mode for the next couple years.
