Preview

France advanced to the semifinals before conceding a single goal in these Olympics. Their stingy defense, coupled with an offense that can give them a comfortable lead, has made them the most complete team in this tournament.

Against Egypt, the Les Bleus proved they could come from behind, overcoming a 1-0 deficit to win the game and earn their way to the gold medal game, in front of their fellow countrymen, on the world's grandest stage.

Spain also came from behind to win their semifinal match-up against Morocco.

The home team is the most complete of the two, with its stingy defense being the key to its success. La Roja has leaned on its offense to fuel it but has not been impervious to opponent scoring.

The French have not won Olympic gold since 1984 while Spain is looking to avenge a loss to Brazil in the gold medal match three years ago, meaning the motivation for each is there to deliver the very best performance that they can.

Spain has the offense to do what no other team has done in these games by exploiting the French defense and scoring enough to win, but there is something to be said for Les Bleus competing at home, in front of what should be a raucous crowd.

After being the best team throughout the tournament, expect France to finish the job and celebrate accordingly Friday.

Gabby Thomas blew away the field to win the gold medal in the women's 200 meters.

Thomas smoked the rest of the field in 21.83 seconds to win the first American gold in the event in 12 years.

None of Thomas' competitors came close to challenging her inside the Stade de France. Thomas stormed in front of the field off the turn and won by 25-hundredths of a second.

Results

1. Gabby Thomas (United States) - 21.83

2. Julien Alfred (St. Lucia) - 22.08

3, Brittany Brown (United States) - 22.20

4. Dina Asher-Smith (Great Britain) - 22.22

5. Daryll Neita (Great Britain) - 22.23

6. Favour Ofili (Nigeria) - 22.24

7. McKenzie Long (United States) - 22.42

8. Jessika Gbai (Nigeria) - 22.70

Thomas used a burst of speed off the turn to cruise in front of her competition and received no threats from 100-meter champ Julien Alfred in the lane directly next to her.

The 27-year-old let out a ton of emotion as she crossed the finish line and added her name to the list of American sprinting legends.

Thomas, who also won bronze in Tokyo in the 200 meters, became the first American woman to win the event since Allyson Felix in 2012.

The 200 meters has been dominated by the Jamaicans in recent years. The Caribbean nation won four of the last five Olympic golds in the race.

Alfred came up one place short of completing the sprint double, but she still put in a respectable race to take second place for St. Lucia.

Brittany Brown made the race extra special for Team USA by bringing home the bronze medal. Brown won the final spot on the medal stand by two-hundredths of a second over Great Britain's Dina Asher-Smith.

The one-three finish was the second for Team USA on the Stade de France track on Tuesday. It also happened in the men's 1,500 meters.

Cole Hocker of the United States delivered the biggest surprise on the track yet at the 2024 Summer Olympics in the men's 1,500 meters.

Hocker upset Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Great Britain's Josh Kerr with a tremendous push in the final 100 meters to win the gold and set a new Olympic record.

Ingebrigtsen, the Tokyo gold medalist, took the race out in a lightning-fast pace, but he faded into fourth place as things picked up down the final stretch.

Yared Nuguse of the United States sprinted past Ingebrigtsen toward the end to take bronze and give Team USA two medals in the 1,500 meters for the first time in over 100 years.

Results

1. Cole Hocker (United States) - 3:27.65 (Olympic record)

2. Josh Kerr (Great Britain) - 3:27.79

3. Yared Nuguse (United States) - 3:27.80

4. Jakob Ingebrigtsen (Norway) - 3:28.24

5. Hobbs Kessler (United States) - 3:29.45

6. Niels Laros (Netherlands) - 3:29.54

7. Narve Gilje Nordas (Norway) - 3:30.46

8. Pietro Arese (Italy) - 3:30.74

Full results can be found on the Olympics website.

Hocker pulled off an incredible final 100 meters of the race to upset the reigning world and Olympic champions in the 1,500 meters.

Ingebrigtsen started the race off in the front at a world-record pace. The Tokyo gold medalist appeared to have shattered the field throughout the first few laps.

Everything changed when the race hit the final turn. Hocker, who had moved up earlier in the lap, made a move down the inside to pass Ingebrigtsen and Kerr.

The American's initial move was blocked by the Norwegian, but he persevered to make another move down the inside that succeeded.

Ingebrigtsen's legs burnt out amid the chaos of the final 100 meters. He fell back out of the medal positions in the stunning finish.

Kerr, who has dueled with Ingebrigtsen verbally and on the track leading up to Paris, earned the best finish of the favorites in second place.

One medal in the 1,500 meters would have been impressive enough for Team USA, but Nuguse made it an even better night with his bronze-medal finish.

The one-three finish marked the first time in 112 years in which Team USA placed two males on the medal stand in the 1,500 meters.

Sydney McLaughlin, Women's Track and Field 400m Hurdles Olympics Qualifying Results

Sydney McLaughlin breezed her way into the 400-meter hurdles final at the 2024 Summer Olympics on Tuesday, finishing in 52.13 seconds in her semifinal heat to qualify.

McLaughlin's time is the fastest-ever time in an Olympic semifinal. She finished 1.7 seconds ahead of second-place Louise Maraval of France in her race.

Here is a look at the eight qualifiers for the final:

  • Sydney McLaughlin (United States): 52.13 seconds
  • Femke Bol (Netherlands): 52.57 seconds
  • Anna Cockrell (United States): 52.90 seconds
  • Rushell Clayton (Jamaica): 53.00 seconds
  • Shiann Salmon (Jamaica): 53.13 seconds
  • Savannah Sutherland (Canada): 53.80 seconds
  • Jasmine Jones (United States): 53.83 seconds
  • Louise Maraval (France): 53.83 seconds

McLaughlin won gold in the 400-meter hurdles race at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and would be the first woman to win the event twice. There have been 11 Olympians total to medal multiple times, and only four men have multiple golds.

McLaughlin would join Deon Hemmings (Jamaica) and Dalilah Muhammad (United States) as the only female multi-time medalists.

"The No. 1 goal was to come back and defend her championship," coach Bob Kersee said. "The last time, she went in as the underdog (to American Dalilah Muhammad). This time, she's coming in as the favorite. Sydney knows what she wants. From the first day I've worked with her, she's been focused on what she wants to do as an athlete."

McLaughlin's biggest obstacle in winning a second straight gold is Femke Bol of the Netherlands. Bol and McLaughlin have embarked on one of the fiercest rivalries in the sport in recent years, with the pair comprising nine of the 10 best times in history.

Bol won bronze in the 2020 event and helped lead the Netherlands to a gold in the 4x400 mixed relay earlier in the Paris Games.

McLaughlin also won gold in the 4x400-meter relay in Tokyo. The United States will look to defend its title in that event on Aug. 10.

For the first time since 2012, the United States women's national team will be playing for an Olympic gold medal after defeating Germany 1-0 in the semifinals of the Paris Olympics on Tuesday, and it will be facing a familiar foe.

In the final on Saturday, the USWNT will face longtime rival Brazil, which trounced reigning World Cup winners Spain 4-2 in Tuesday's other semifinal.

The Americans will be surely motivated to return to the top of the podium for the first time since the London Games 12 years ago, but it won't be easy.

After losing 2-0 to Spain in a group-stage match, Brazil bounced back in epic fashion. An own goal got the scoring started in the sixth minute for Brazil, and Gabi Portilho put in another goal right before halftime to give the team a 2-0 lead. Adriana buried the dagger in the 71st minute, and Kerolin added an insurance goal in stoppage time after Salma Paralluelo got Spain on the board in the 85th minute.

The USWNT has had recent success against Brazil, including a 1-0 win in the 2024 Concacaf Gold Cup final. Brazil will be motivated to avenge that loss and to make matters more interesting, the legendary Marta will be returning from her two-game ban in the Olympic final and will be looking to end her storied career in a big way.

Still, the USWNT should enter the match with all the confidence in the world, especially after showing its resilience once again in Tuesday's match against Germany.

After both teams went scoreless during regulation, extra time was needed to determine the winner. Sophia Smith found the back of the net after a beautiful through ball from Mallory Swanson that allowed her to float the ball over Germany goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger's head.

The goal occurred less than five minutes into extra time, creating a nerve-racking overtime period. Smith tried to put in a second goal in the 104th minute, but Berger was there for the save. Germany had a corner near the end of the first half of overtime but failed to convert.

Germany remained on the attack in the final 15 minutes. Janina Minge had a shot in the box in the 114th minute that was off-target. Germany received a free kick in the 118th minute that made the Americans sweat, but star goalie Alyssa Naeher saved the header attempt by Laura Freigang to preserve the lead.

USWNT also needed an extra-time goal to earn a spot in the semifinals, as Trinity Rodman's strike helped the team advance past Japan on Saturday. It's the first time since 2004 that the USWNT played consecutive extra-time matches in Olympics fixtures.

Saturday's final between the USWNT and Brazil will undoubtedly be another epic clash between the longtime rivals that will have fans hyped to watch.

Arisa Trew won Tuesday's park skateboarding final at the 2024 Paris Games to become the youngest Olympic gold medalist in Australian history.

The 14-year-old finished with a top score of 93.18 in her final run to become the first Australian woman to claim skateboarding gold.

Japan's Cocona Hiraki claimed her second silver medal in the event, while Great Britain's Sky Brown earned her second bronze.

The full order of finish is below.

Women's park final results

  1. Arisa Trew, Australia: 93.18
  2. Cocona Hiraki, Japan: 92.63
  3. Sky Brown, Great Britain: 92.31
  4. Dora Varella, Brazil: 89.14
  5. Heili Sirvio, Finland: 88.89
  6. Bryce Wettstein, United States: 88.12
  7. Naia Laso, Spain: 86.28
  8. Hinano Kusaki, Japan: 69.76

Defending Olympic champion Sakura Yosozumi of Japan was eliminated in the preliminary round.

This is not the first time this year Trew has made skateboarding history. In May she posted a clip of her becoming the the first woman to land a 900, a two-and-a-half rotation spin.

The accomplishment came less than a year after Trew became the first female skateboarder to land a 720, necessitating two full spins, in competition.

Her gold medal-winning run included a 360 as well as the front flip and 540 known as the McTwist, per Samantha Wong of NBCOlympics.com.

Hiraki, who led qualifiers, topped the standings after the first run with 91.98 points before she was unseated by Trew and Brown.

She put up an even stronger run on her third attempt to climb back into position for the silver medal.

Brown earned bronze despite dislocating her shoulder days before competition, and suffering an apparently painful fall on the shoulder during her second run of the preliminary run.

Brown said on Instagram ahead of the competition that she was "not 100%" and would need to undergo surgery on her shoulder following the final.

Despite those limitations, Brown completed the comeback with a strong third run that clinched her a place on the podium. The 16-year-old will now add a second bronze to her collection after becoming the youngest Olympic medalist in Team Great Britain's history during her debut at the Games in 2021.

Great Britain's Adam Peaty Says Olympians Have Found Worms in Food at Paris Games

Team Great Britain swimmer Adam Peaty says that Olympians have found worms in their food during the 2024 Paris Games.

Peaty, who last week tied with Team USA's Nic Fink for the silver in the 100-meter breaststroke, told James Gray of Britain's iNews that food quality has been impacted by organizers' promises to increase sustainability by serving more plant-based meals.

"The narrative of sustainability has just been punished on the athletes. I want meat, I need meat to perform and that's what I eat at home, so why should I change?" Peaty asked Gray. "I like my fish and people are finding worms in the fish. It's just not good enough.

"The standard, we're looking at the best of the best in the world, and we're feeding them not the best."

Both an Olympics spokesperson and representative of Team Great Britain said they had not been able to confirm Peaty's allegation regarding worms in the food, Gray reported.

Peaty, the 100m breaststroke world record holder, holds six gold medals including three golds and three silvers after competing at Rio 2016 and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics that took place in 2021.

He told Gray that athletes received better food during both of his previous Olympic experiences.

"The catering isn't good enough for the level the athletes are expected to perform. We need to give the best we possibly can," Peaty told Gray. "Tokyo, the food was incredible, Rio was incredible. But this time around… there wasn't enough protein options, long queues, waiting 30 minutes for food because there's no queuing system."

The food criticism comes amid what Peaty has described as "probably the worst week of my life" physically after he sat out of the mixed 4x100m medley relay following a positive COVID test.

He is not the only Olympic athlete to reportedly express dissatisfaction with the food at the Athletes' Village, which the International Olympic Committee reported before the Games would be comprised of 60 percent meat-free options.

Some athletes have criticized the food on social media, while British Olympic Association CEO Andy Anson said the food in the Athletes' Village was "not adequate," according to a July 25 report by Martyn Ziegler and Elizabeth Ammon of the Times in London.

"There are not enough of certain foods: eggs, chicken, certain carbohydrates, and then there is the quality of the food, with raw meat being served to athletes," Anson said.

Organizers of the 2024 Paris Games announced four days after Anson's comments that they would make adjustments to the athletes' menu, including adding more meat and eggs, Julien Pretot reported for Reuters.
